Cory Lidle Dies in Plane Crash

[editor's note, by dajafi] From the diaries. Shocking and tragic.

Wow, just... wow.

Here's the story from CBS Sportsline.

http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9721382

Apparently the plane crashed into a condo building in Manhattan.  Just saw on ESPNNews that Lidle is confirmed dead.

Absolutely tragic.  I'm still in shock.  Obviously, my thoughts go out to his family.

RIP Cory.

Update [2006-10-11 17:15:39 by DanT]: It turns out Lidle was the pilot of the plane. Still no word on who the other passengers were, or if anyone in the building was hurt (or how it happened.

Update [2006-10-11 17:23:5 by DanT]: Here's the story from ESPN. It turns out Cory was the only person on the plane, and the three other deaths were in the building. On a side note, if anyone has seen the footage on TV, considering it happened five miles from the WTC, this feels even worse.

Heard the whole thing unfold listening to the radio while driving from Bucks County to northern NJ.  It was interesting and pretty moving to hear the perspective of two different cities.  I'm crushed when I think about Cory's family... his wife, son, and twin brother.

It's a shame...
But it amazes me that people are often so careless with their lives.

Why do you say it was careless?
It's certainly possible that this accident was due to carelessness, but I don't know that there's any evidence to that effect.

Did you see...
What the day was like today?  I felt rain in my knees for the past two days.  They KNEW it would be terrible out.  I am not saying that this stuff will happen, but you greatly increase the risk going out in that weather.

True
But the same could be said for everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car in similar conditions.

While that may be the case...
Driving your car is often a necessity.  And people are much better at driving than flying planes (one would presume).  Plus, you can run into something and not die.  I am sure most auto accidents are not fatal.  I believe most plane crashes are.

Everything I've heard made this sound
Like a mechanical failure, but it doesn't really matter.  This is just incredibly tragic and you hope that his family will be ok.
