All-Star "break" in the AFL

I haven't been to an AFL game since Monday and can't make the All-Star game tommorrow, so here is some general information on the AFL and Phillies prospects.

After today's 11 inning loss, the Saguaros fell to 7-8, losing their last three games and a guaranteed playoff spot.  The game would have been called after 11 if the Desert Dogs wouldn't have scored because of the Robinson Rule.  (I had to work that in somewhere this season to show what an AFL rule dork I am!)

Here are links to the boxes for the last 3 games.

In Tuesday's game, Kyle Kendrick was hit pretty hard in 0.1 inning, but really wasn't given a chance to pitch out of the jam he put himself in.  Chris Key came in and got him out of it instead.  Key is now pitching in place of Bisenius, who is out of the AFL and will head for Venezuela in about a month for Winter Ball and rehab.
Kendrick: 0.1IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 5.06 ERA
Key: 2.2IP, 1H, 2K, 0.00 ERA

Wednesday's game saw the Saguaros shut out and Zack Segovia took the loss, giving up his first run of the season.  He gave up the run on a walk, a steal and a single, so it still seems he is pitching very well.
Segovia: 1.0, 1H, 1ER, 1BB, 1K, 1.04 ERA
Jaramillo: 0/3, 1BB, 1K, .290

No Phillies pitched today, however Jaramillo did DH and bat cleanup (his usual spot).
Jaramillo: 2/5, 2R, 2 Doubles, 2RBI, 2K, .306

Our own Gio Gonzalez will start the AFL All-Star game tommorrow.  He takes over for Luke Hocheaver, who is leaving the AFL with right shoulder tighntess.  Going up against Gonzalez is Mike Pelfry, who I saw pitch down here.  He throws 97 and is working on a slider.  Watch out for him in the Mets bullpen (again) next year.  J.A. Happ is on the West roster as well.  The game should be available via milb.com audio and gameday.

In other news, Kyle Drabek is in the Florida Instructional League.  The Phillies rusted brass wants him to improve his work habits.

Jaramillo cleanup?
I know he's been hot, but really?

Cleanup
He's been 4 or 5 all season.  There are just too many factors that I don't know about to make a guess as to why.

Phillies.com updates
Have you all seen them?  I think mine are much better.  I wonder what that guy gets paid?

All Star result
The West lost to the East 3-1 in the AFL Rising Stars game.  Gio allowed an unearned run in a somewhat strange fashion and Happ struck out the side!  Jaramillo also played and went 0-1 with a walk and a passed ball.

In other news, SWB Manager John Russell may be lost to another team.

BP's minors guy on Floyd
"Is he out of chances? Maybe. After another season of struggles at the big league level and very little performance at Triple-A to warrant another chance, Floyd's Arizona Fall League season started off with yet more struggling, including allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings in his second start. However, since then he's pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and on the short season opposing batters are batting just .171 against the 23-year-old righthander. Obviously, seven innings does not equal a complete turnaround by any means, but Floyd is the kind of guy who is under the microscope, as the team will always look for any sign of progress from a player who was the fourth overall pick in 2001 (receiving a $4.2 million bonus). A classic power righty at 6-foot-5, many attribute Floyd's struggles over the past 24 months to his confidence, as the physical tools are there, but the results are not. So, while it's just seven innings, at this point even the smallest amount of success could be just what he needs."

my hope
His AFL numbers, combined with his not-awful IL numbers, are enough that he proves to have some trade value.

Hell, as long as I'm wishcasting, I'll request that he and Rowand get packaged for something really good... though it surely sounds like Gillick is thinking free agency rather than trades to remake the roster. Even if they flip Floyd for a blocked outfield or 3b prospect, I'd probably be okay with that.

Tough situation

This is one of those situations where you don't want to trade a guy and see him have lots of sucess with another club (which he is certainly capable of).  At the same time, you really don't believe that he will turn it around unless he gets a change of scenery and a new chance.  I don't know that he wouldn't be the second or third option for a starting pitcher when the Phillies will need one in '07.  Germano might get picked ahead of him and then you have a lot of other attractive arms that they might want to bring up like Gonzalez, Segovia or Happ.

I say be selfish and don't trade him unless you get good value for him.  You can NEVER have too much pitching, especially good, young, inexpensive pitching.  I guess the "good" is what we don't know about.
