A Phillies Thanksgiving

On this day before Thanksgiving, I give thanks to the following (of course, besides my family and health):

  • Ryan Howard and his massive frame that hits balls very very very far
  • Cole Hamels' precious left arm
  • Youth generally: Howard, Hamels, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Brett Myers (on the field, not off) and to a lesser extent Shane Victorino, Carlos Ruiz, Ryan Madson, and Fabio Castro
  • Citizens Bank Park, where watching a game is tons of fun, at least, as much fun as watching the Phils play can be
  • Ed Wade and Larry Bowa not being employed in Philadelphia
  • Mike Schmidt and Bobby Abreu, two of the greatest Phillies ever, playing while I have been a fan of the Phils
  • Pat Burrell and his inexplicable reluctance (so far) to leave Philly

Star-divide

Of course, there are things I'm not thankful for as well:

  • Phillies' ownership and everything about them - their invisibility, their stubborn refusal to sell, their insistence on hiring retreads or their lackeys, and, most disastrously, their complete lack of concern for winning
  • Pat Gillick who seems to be stuck in the 1970s with his talent acquisition philosophy
  • Proven veterans like Jeff Conine, Jamie Moyer, Sal Fasano, Arthur Rhodes, and possibly soon-to-be-Phillies David Weathers and Joe Borowski
  • Brian Cashman and his thievery
  • The myths of 1980 and 1993 and their stranglehold on this franchise

Add to either list as you see fit! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Not thankful for...
The misnomer of Citizens Bank Park as a "bandbox".

Thankful for:

The stock of future Phillies pitchers in the system.

Not thankful for
Citizens Bank Park - Biggest waste of money ever. To give this god awful, lying ownership group that won't invest in the team an almost free brand new state of the art ballpark is a crime.

This ownership deserves to still be playing in the Vet. Instead they'll pocket the hundreds of millions of extra equity the new park brings, the new TV deal, the new CBA, the tens of millions of saved cash from contracts like Abreu, Thome, Bell, Leiberthal... they'll pocket that instead of putting it back into the team.

Thankful for - Bargain youth players like Utley, Howard, & Hamels that will give this team a shot.

I am thankful
as a fan for CBP however. Other than Camden Yards & PNC Park it's the best ballpark I've ever been to(which is quite a bit).

Thankful for
Soriano being in Chicago, thank god we didn't match the cubs offer just to gain a bit of positive P.R amongst the morons on T.V. Not Thankful for Charlie Manuel and his idiotic moves to the pen. Oh and i'm also very thankful for MLB.TV, since it allows me and my dad to watch the games in England every night, even if they do finish at 4 in the morning !

Not so thankful for
A GM who has not made a single good personnel decision.

Except for
not throwing dollars at Soriano, Aramis, Carlos Lee...

Disagree
I am thankful for Jamie Moyer.  I like seeing a real class act like him get a chance to finish his career (probably) just a few miles from his alma mater.

Other than that, good list.

I'd rather
Neither Gillick or Wade we're employed here.

I'd rather
Their employers were not here.

YOUTH WILL BE SERVED
Nobody over 32 on my ballclub.  No exceptions.

I read a science fiction story once
...in which anyone who reached the age of 65 became legally dead and any other person could murder them without fear of repercussions.

That makes about as much sense as your notion.
