Hamels to 15-day DL

Update [2006-5-24 19:22:43 by dajafi]: Hamels will miss at least two starts, according to the Inquirer. Clay Condrey has been recalled to take his roster spot, and Ryan Madson will return to the rotation.

Apparently, the "savior" Cole Hamels has hurt his left shoulder and is out for his start against NY.  Lieber will start instead.

On a bad night, it's just gotten worse.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this. Hopefully, he's just got a strain and he'll be back to pitch on, say, Saturday or Sunday. If he's out, I guess it means Madson back to the rotation on the heels of his 7+ inning quality relief outing.

Two pops
Apparently Cole felt two pops in his shoulder, and described it as feeling "weird." I guess "weird" is better than "excruciating" but I'm rather worried.

On the other hand, my shoulders and other joints pop all the time, with no ill effects. Hopefully Hamels' symptom is similar.

no idea
phillies.com characterizes the whole situation as the pitcher and team "playing it safe." But given his history--and the ill-starred nature of this team--it's tough not to worry.

I'm just bummed because I'm going tonight, and was really looking forward to seeing him pitch.

playing it safe
The Phillies have shown pretty much zero tendancy to "play it safe" with injuries, prefering to have their injured players gut it out and play instead.  If indeed this is a change in philosophy (rather than perhaps an isolated incident given Hamels' pedigree and injury history) then at the the very least it's reassuring that the Phillies have made some progress in their attitudes.  I suppose that would be a small silver lining if Cole ends up being hurt long term.

Kruk says...
he spoke to Hamels today, it's just a pinch and Cole should make his next start--presumably Memorial Day at CBP. This from accounts of "Daily News Live."

Looking for confirmation from another source...

Hamels feeling better
Great news is an understatement.

Per Phillies Pravda:

Hamels told Phillies officials about the sensation he felt during a throwing session on Tuesday, and that admission that led to a 15-day stint on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The lefty felt much better the next day, so much better, in fact, that he felt he could've taken his regular turn in the rotation.

"It's unfortunate I had to go on the DL," Hamels said. "I could pitch [Friday], [Saturday] and the next day. It never really hurt to begin with. It just felt different. The next morning when I woke up, I was like, 'Dang, if I wouldn't have said something, I could've pitched.'

"But if I wouldn't have said something and it would've been serious, I could've been out on the mound in that game and done something bad."

That's the point. Considering Hamels' injury history, he and the organization have reason to be skittish whenever Hamels says ouch. The lefty has been limited to 51 innings over the past two seasons because of back, hand and elbow injuries, so the alarms justifiably went off.

"I've had that enough with my elbow and my back," he said. "Every time I've heard a pop, it's led to a worse-case scenario. This is best, to get that knowledge that nothing's wrong. In this game, cracks are kind of scary."

Especially with Hamels. He's been on anti-inflammatories as a precaution, and he was told not to throw for two to four days. Hamels plans to throw a bullpen session on Saturday, and expects to be activated on June 3, where he would start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, less than two hours from his hometown of San Diego.
