Even more options

With free agency looming and reading the posts at various rumors sites, it seems as if the Phillies may try another 'big splash' approach to the offseason.  But, signing Andruw Jones spells bad news a couple years from now as his paycheck will hinder the Phillies' future signings.  Thus I propose several bargain basement alternatives to the team's holes at third base, the outfield, and relief pitching.

First, for third base, if the Greg Dobbs/Wes Helms platoon can not work out, either because Dobbsie leaves, proves he's just a flash in the pan, etc., why not try Mike Lamb with Helms?  Lamb, a free agent, has an OPS+ above 100 the past two years while averaging over 300 at bats a year.  Granted, his defense is probably atrocious, but with him and Helms hopefully rebounding, a league-avergae platoon could be cobbled together on the cheap.  Sure beats paying Mike Lowell 8mil/year for 3 years or trading away valuable commodities for Garrett Atkins, and sticking Helms on the bench in my estimate.

In the outfield, the team does not need Rowand and his 10mil/year contract.  He may regress after his career year and be a Lieber-esque burden to the payroll.  Instead, maybe Dobbs could move to platoon with Jayson Werth in right while moving Victorino to center?  Also, I wonder what it would take to pry Ryan Church from the Nationals.  A couple years back, they did not play him regularly.  They may have since wised up, but after acquiring Pena, perhaps he still could be had.  Church has had an OPS+ of above 100 these past three years.  Teaming with Werth, he could be a potent addition.

In the 'pen, though it really would not be an acquisition on the cheap, I think Francisco Cordero is the ticket.  Signing him would allow Myers to move back in the rotation and give the team a legitimate closer.  While I do not buy into the 'closer mentality' logic, I would say that his power pitching style would be more effective than a control pitcher who uses guile and heart.  Lets face it, in this day and age, to sign a real closer means to get swindled in the open market.  Plus, I think, so long as I'm making that Ryan Church deal, I'd get the Nats to include Jon Rauch, who in 87.3 IP, K'd 71 while only walking 21.  And, even though his past year was uninspired by his standards, Scott Linebrink is a free agent too, lets not forget that.  Again, not really on the cheap, but a Linebrink signing does not break the bank.

Re: Even more options
If we're going to dump Rowand, I would agree and not go after Jones.  But I also think it would be more likely we would be able to get Brad Wilkerson before Church, which I wouldn't be too disappointed in.  And although Lowell wouldn't be the best financial move, I really don't want to see Wes Helms in there at all, except for the occasional rest for the starting 3rd baseman.  I think we'd be better off going after a more high quality player.  I do agree that we need to get a full time closer and send Myers back to the rotation.  Hamels, Myers, Kendrick, Moyer, and ?.  Still who fills that 5th spot.  In my book Eaton is NOT an option.  He's horrible at best.  Yes, he did get 10 wins, but I wonder how many of those were actually quality starts? I'm willing to bet a good portion of those 10 wins were because we jumped out to a big lead, he gave up 5 or 6 runs and got pulled.  The Royals are pretty happy to give away star players for not a whole lot in return...  I wonder if we'd be able to pull a deal for Gil Meche or perhaps Brian Bannister.  Yes I realize that Meche was 9-13, but he had 23 quality starts, over 200 innings, an ERA of 3.67 (not bad for the AL), and a WHIP of 1.3...  I'd send Eaton and Bourn or Eaton and someone reasonable...  I'd even be willing to pick up a mil or two of Eaton's salary.

Hamels, Myers, Meche, Kendrick, Moyer...  works for me...

Re: Even more options
Well I guess that isn't a possibility...  I just read this from Gillick...

* On adding pitching help this winter: "It's supply and demand. If you have a small supply and large demand ... This is a dangerous market. We got a dangerous one [last year], but I look for [Adam Eaton] to turn it around."

why??

Re: Even more options
It was the worst season of his career by a very large margin.  I think he should be able to lower his ERA by at least a point and a half next year.  (Of course, his ERA would still be pretty high even after that.)

Re: Even more options
I think because of Eaton's $8mil, we're kinda stuck with him.  Charlie has proven that money isn't everything when he sets his roster, thankfully, but I'll bet he at least gets the first crack at the job in Spring training (unless the team resigns Lohse, who, esp. after the playoffs, I'm pretty take or leave with)

Re: Even more options
We won't even go after Lohse.  Boras is going to want a goldmine for him.

Re: Even more options
I wouldn't mind getting any of these guys, although I think you'd find that Church and especially Rauch wouldn't be bargains. (unfortunately; I live in DC so I see a lot of both, and they're very solid players.) you'd have to give up legitimate quality prospects to get either of them from the Nats.

Re: Even more options
You what case I'd sign Andruw Jones in? If he goes out there and can not get the money he wants... he may decide to sign somewhere on a one year deal to take a second shot at having the year he wanted to have this past one.

In that case, I would guess that CBP would be an attractive place for Jones. He'd pump up his power numbers and he'd be familiar with all the pitching he'd be facing. Plus, I don't think he's as bad as he looked this past year.

For a one year, "show me" deal. I'd take Andruw Jones. For big, long term money I want nothing to do with him. I'd just as soon give that to Rowand or Hunter if we are going to give big money to a CF.

Re: Even more options
not so sure Jones would be eager to play in CBP. his career numbers in Philly:

151 PA, 35 G
.193/.245/.393
8 2B, 6 HR, 24 RBI

and those numbers aren't artificially brought down by a bad 2007, either. at CBP, he hit .158/.256/.474/3 HR/9 RBI in 2004, .175/.214/.400/2/8 in 2005, .240/.286/.400/1/4 in 2006, and .216/.237/.297/0/3 in 2007.

doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, but them's the facts.
