First Arizona Fall League Diary

Time for another exciting Arizona Fall League Season.  We've got John Russell managing the team, another year of Joe Bisenius and a guy named Tuffy catching.  Someone tell me this is not more exciting than being in the playoffs.

Star-divide

The Phillies prospects will once again be playing for the Peoria Saguaros.  Just like last year they are paired with the Padres, but have exchanged the Yankees, Nationals and Cardinals for the Marlins, Dodgers and Tigers.

Here are the players the Phils sent to Arizona this year, followed by their age and level last year:
Joseph Bisenius, 24, AA
Josh Outman, 23, AA
Patrick Overholt, 23, AA
Joe Savery, 22, A - Williamsport
Tuffy Gosewich, 24, A - Lakewood
Michael Costanzo, 24, AA
Greg Golson, 22, AA

Obviously Savery, Outman, Golson and Costanzo are the big names here, which is pretty dissapointing.  Golson is young, but had a K/BB ratio of 20/1.  He has all the tools you could ask for but needs a lot of work.  Costanzo has a very long swing and is not much help in the field.  He has good size and power.  (Didn't they say the same about Burrell?)  Savery has a pretty good ceiling with an injury history and Outman is rated very high in all the rankings I have seen.

The Saguaros are 2-1 and I'll have more info for you all after I talk to some of the scouts at the next game.

Re: First Arizona Fall League Diary
I saw Golson had a strong first couple games--three doubles, a steal. No walks though. For me, I'd almost be fine if he hit .150 but drew walks in 20 percent of his plate appearances... I know he can do everything else.

Also saw that Bisenius got a win and a few strikeouts in his first appearance. Don't count him out for the 2008 bullpen.

Even without Mathieson and Happ, this has to be the best group we've ever sent to the AFL. Look forward to the diaries, and post pics of you have any... thanks PP.

The best group pitching wise or overall?

Re: First Arizona Fall League Diary
I NEED Outman to perform well and make a run for our bullpen next spring.  His name alone should be a reason to bring him up.  We need these youngsters to step it up while the coal is still hot on the ML team.

Re: First Arizona Fall League Diary
I'd be delighted if Costanzo turned out 1/2 as good as Burrell

Re: First Arizona Fall League Diary
The funny thing about Costanzo is that he started out supposedly "this" close to being a major league thirdbaseman defensively, but the reports on his glove get worse every year....unlike his bat. This might be the first off-season where it sounds like some folks think that he could actually contribute to the big club sometime. Looking forward to reading more reports on him.

Costanzo
I'll have more on him soon.  I am not at all excited about our position player prospects in the AFL this season.  Costanzo looks to be Russell Branyan.  There is no way he plays for them next year.  2009 looks more realistic and we'll see how he progresses.  Golson is a long way from being able to do anything but pinch run for the big club.  Tuffy looks to be very fundamentally sound, which is a great asset to have in your system working with your pitchers, but is too far away to project (for me at least).

Re: Costanzo
Costanzo is now 1 for 17 with 10 Ks.

Tuffy
What a great name. Unfortunately, his chances of ever being a major-league contributor appear to be effectively nil.

After a lousy year at Clearwater in 2006 (.699 OPS), he spent this year down a level, and got worse (.647 OPS).

His ceiling looks like third catcher.
