Phils Re-sign Entire Coaching Staff Through 2008

People have been talking about what the status of the coaching staff would be for next year. Well, we have our answer: it won't look any different. That means we probably won't end up getting the most out of our (hopefully) upgraded pitching staff thanks to Dubee and we can expect Steve Smith to continue being, well...Steve Smith.

Re: Phils Resign Entire Coaching Staff
It's funny how the word "resign" is pretty close to being its own opposite.

Re: Phils Resign Entire Coaching Staff
Well, two things. First of all, it's not unheard of to fire coaches in-season, so if Smith or Dubee (the two guys who get the most flak) do a bad job again, they might not last through next season.

Second, in the case of Dubee, I still don't really know how to evaluate the guy. I don't think anyone does. Is he good because he turned around Romero? Awful because he couldn't get anything out of Zagurski or most of the other young relievers? Does he get credit for Kendrick? Blame for Eaton? Is he Jamie Moyer's puppet? It's just too hard to say.

Re: Phils Resign Entire Coaching Staff
I think it is more valuable in interpreting a pitching coaches' job performance to look at the collective performance of the pitching staff. So, while some individuals may have performed well under Dubee, others were terrible . This can be attributed in part to having bad pitchers to start with, in addition to injuries, and inexperienced replacements but the pitching coach must factor in somewhere. The relationship between the raw skill of the staff and the impact of coaching on the staff is difficult to unravel though. I don't have time to do the research, but there must have been a team at some point with around the same level of pitching talent that the Phillies had, with a pitching coach who had a history of good results that we can use to roughly demonstrate how coaching effects pitching staff performance.
