Iguchi signs with Padres

Two trends of the offseason continued last night, as the Phillies lost a third baseman and were outjumped for a free agent by the San Diego Padres, who signed Tadahito Iguchi to a one-year, $4 million deal. As with Mike Lowell, the Phils had offered a sweeter contract for Iguchi; as with Randy Wolf, they saw the target of their intentions land in San Diego.

I wasn't particularly crazy about Iguchi as the Phils' third-base solution anyway, though he looks pretty damn good compared to free-agent Pedro Feliz and is probably preferable to the incumbent platoon of Wes Helms and Greg Dobbs. The non-tender deadline tonight could put Morgan Ensberg in play--ironically enough, from the Padres.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dobbs and Helms combined to put up Iguchi-like offensive stats (.350 OBP with 15 HRs or so). They'll probably fall a little short in OBP, but not by all that much.

I wouldn't touch Pedro Feliz with an eleven-foot pole.

Yeah, agree on both counts. I'm on record predicting that Helms will bounce back at least a little in 2008--something like .270/.340/.430 at least, in 250 or so ABs.

Meanwhile, the Astros just traded for Miguel Tejada--and got absolutely violated, far as I can tell:

Wow...

So basically Wade gave up

Scott, Albers, Patton, Sarfate, and Lidge

for

Tejada and Bourn

Did we let know Wade know Eaton is available?

Oops thats right add Bruntlett to the outgoing and Geary to the inbound.  Still... Hmmm..

How about Gordon and Eaton for Berkman and Wandy Rodriguez?

Good for Costanzo. I'm glad his folks will be able to attend his games after all, or at least some of them.
