Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal

The Phils signed former St. Louis outfielder So Taguchi to a 1 year deal. Taguchi is able to play all 3 OF positions and had an OBP of .350 and Slugged .368 last season. While he does not boast too much power, he has decent speed - he stole 7 bases in 307 AB's last season - and is a capable defender. I am guessing he will serve as a late game defensive replacement for Burrell and as a PH/PR - similar to the role that Bourn played for the majority of the 2007 season. He also makes a servicable replacement at CF in the case of an injury to Victorino.

Pending the details of the contract, I like the signing. I think it adds depth and security to our outfield and gives us experience off of the bench for late in games.

Update [2007-12-24 1:15:48 by FuquaManuel]:The Phils website is reporting that Taguchi has been signed for slightly more than $1 million, with an option for '09. That's about what I expected so it still looks like a solid move.

I like it.  Right handed, gets on base decently... decent speed... decent defense.  I don't think he's too bad for a 5th outfielder.  I think we have a solid bench.

Re: Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal
My initial reaction to this, upon seeing it on ESPNs' ticker 10 minutes ago, was "ugh, that means Snelling's gone." While that's probably true, also true is that Taguchi's known serviceability in the 5th-OF role is probably a smarter bet than the always-hurt Snelling's unlikely upside.

IOW, it's basically fine.

I'm a bit more disappointed about this. Maybe I'm a little overly enamored with Snelling upside, but I was pretty excited about seeing if he could stick, about as excited as one can get over a 5th outfielder anyway. Oh well.

Look at it this way.... there's a good chance Werth or Victorino will get hurt!

Plus....  None of our current outfielders has tons of experience in center... and So has played well over 200 games in center.

Re: Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal
I suppose we could keep Snelling if we carry only six relievers and two catchers, though that isn't the likeliest alternative.

For the pen, Lidge, Romero, Gordon, Madson are locks to be your top four, and that actually looks fairly strong (hard to believe). So we might not necessarily need a seventh guy. I think they'd be inclined to take seven just because there are so many guys who are out of options, but then, the same thing is true for Snelling.

Also Bruntlett for Nunez.  Also good.  Small but definite improvements for the Phils this off season it looks like to me.

Good move (man, there have been a few of those lately), but FuquaManuel: www.tinyurl.com is your friend!

Good move! Though Taguchi's talent is praised greatly, will he go far or not? New year will proves it. Merry Christmas :)

Re: Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal
Maybe it's the Xmas spirit (though maybe not, given the overall relative humbuggery of the Jewish-born agnostic writing this), but reading these comments I feel grateful for our regulars here at TGP. There are sites out in Phillies Blogworld where the negativity is so thick and noxious I can't even navigate it anymore; I was just reading on one of them how Ryan Howard "regressed as a hitter in 2007" and that the Phillies would be very foolish to sign him long-term. Every move the team makes is a mark of idiocy, destined to end in tears; every guy not signed, by contrast, is a near-certain difference-maker who would take the Phillies to the Promised Land if only The Owners weren't so damn cheap.

That's pretty evidently nonsense. Needless to say, we're not blind cheerleaders for the organization. (Well, none of us who write the site, and almost none of you who make it a real community rather than just an empty room where half-smart eggheads come to rant about the greatest game in the world.) They've made plenty of mistakes, and too many of those spring from basic misperceptions of value (Abe Nunez signing, I'm looking in your direction) or systemic failure to conduct due diligence. (Hiya, Freddy Garcia trade.)  But this is a fun team to watch, at one of the high points of its long history. Nothing wrong with acknowledging that, while hoping for even better stuff to come in 2008 and the years that follow.

So, my sincere thanks.

Re: Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal
Dajafi - Well said.  I'm new to the board, but I agree with you 100%.

Taguchi is a very smart CF experience play.  As much as I love Snelling's upside, I have been in love with it for several years with no love in return.

Touching on one other topic a little bit below, I doubt the Phils will wear out the pen and go with 6.  I have to believe at least one of your other relievers is Zagurski, and one of Durbin or Eaton will be in the pen.  There is room for one more, and I think the Phils should go that direction.  In that case, Snelling is the odd man out.

Re: Phils sign OF So Taguchi to 1 year deal
Can anyone explain Snelling's contract status to me? Is it a split contract? Or, if we want to send him to AAA, he can accept the assignment, right? Wouldn't that be to his advantage? He has been injured and this is a chance to rub the rust off with a month or two of 5-6 starts a week. If he is hitting .320 and stinging the ball, we will find a spot for him, right? Or get something of value in trade, maybe a reliever. Key point is there may be mutual benefit to Snelling playing regulary if he has a good spring and then have an agreement that he will be traded if he is healthy and they have no spot for him. I suppose that depends on Snelling the his FO relationship.
Time for a regime change.

as far as I know, Snelling has a $450k major league contract. he would have to pass through waivers to go down to the minors, since I'm pretty sure he's out of options.
