Complete Coverage >

Seven months ago, as the frigid winter was winding down and we were assessing the fortunes of our red pinstriped pals, did you really think it'd come to this?  One victory, and the Phillies are in the World Series for just the sixth time in their very, very long history.

Win.

I haven’t either, not because of its politics (which sound a bit more mixed than is generally put out there anyway) but because the original premise—a whole season that captures the events of one day?—just seemed so goofy to me.

And I still have trouble not thinking of “The Lost Boys” with Kiefer Sutherland up there.

Does it depend on what level they’re at? I mean if you get a guy from single a and developo him for a couple years versus getting a guy who becomes the MVP in AAA and then you take too long to promote him?

The phillies were last in the playoffs/world series in 1993 – and it was a long time

When were the dodgers last in the playoffs/world series again?

he didn’t do it all alone – and the core of this team was in place before gillick – i feel it’s insulting to those that came before him to give gillick all the credit as much as i feel it was wrong to pull burrell in game 5 after all the crap and intense loyalty he’s had to the city

by jemagee on Oct 15, 2008 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

How involved was Wade in drafting as isn’t Wade the guy running the team when they drafted at least one of the MVPs, the guy at second base, and the guy accepting this MVP award?

Wasn’t the core of this team selected while Pat Gillick was here?

Who drafted JImmy and Pat?

by jemagee on Oct 15, 2008 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Wade put together the core—Rollins, Burrell, Myers, Utley, Howard, Hamels.

Gillick finished the job. The late-Wade Phils never could complete the roster—the dropoff was huge from the first ten or so guys to the last ten or so. Gillick’s finds or cheap pickups—Moyer, Werth, Dobbs, Romero, Eyre, Durbin, Stairs—were what they needed to finish the job.

by dajafi on Oct 15, 2008 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Every team has a handful of stars. It’s what you do with them that counts.

Most of that core is well beyond their original free agency years and signed to extensions. Many of those extensions are dramatic overpays with idiotic no-trade clauses. That created great financial pressures that Gillick has had to overcome.

Some might say he’s overrated. I say he’s arguably the most accomplished GM of the past 25 years.

by Jay on Oct 15, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Ryan Howard Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino are not signed to extensions
Burrell is gone after this year

So of the ‘core’ only two are signed to long term extensions

But hey – that’s most of them right?

by jemagee on Oct 15, 2008 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, only three of six. Burrell’s contract has been a significant problem for years, and the Phils sent $7 million Chicago to pay Thome this season. Wade created these problems, Gillick worked around them.

by Jay on Oct 16, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

That was his fourth postseason start, and he pitched about 20 scoreless innings in the first three, plus two scoreless innings in relief (against the Indians) the game before.

My theory: He had one bad game.

by Jay on Oct 16, 2008 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

COuld be that too :)

Not as big a problem as Ortiz and Becket not being 100% anyway :)

I don’t believe ‘no manny’ makes a difference personally, Jason Bay has been quite good since coming to Boston, Ortiz is just not healthy

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree, and Bay can beat you a lot of ways. Hell of a good player.

But Manny can transform a game to an almost Bonds-like degree at the plate. Over 162 games, I’ll take Bay, but I probably take Manny in a short series, just as long as Harold Baines is nowhere in sight.

Beckett and Ortiz are more significant problems, and not having Schilling this season makes a big difference as they try to find guys to pitch that third and fourth game.

Very nearly a race war here in west Philly. Drunk white kids walking past the black dorm…not a good look.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 16, 2008 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

the ‘black dorm’ – what the hell school do you go to?

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Penn. For the record, I live in the “black dorm”

by FuquaManuel on Oct 16, 2008 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Why does Penn have a black dorm?

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I mean is it coincidental or is it reserved for african american students in the name of multi culturalism?

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

It was won through student protests in the 70s as a safe space on campus. It’s not really the “black dorm”, but it has historically had a higher percentage of black students than any other dorm. But it is not reserved for blacks exclusively, obviously. I don’t like to call it the black dorm (especially considering that it is slightly less than 50% black) but in order to convey the tension of the moment it was the best way to go.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 16, 2008 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I find it sad that there was a tension in the moment…one of the things i don’t miss about my ‘native home’

I’m bummed out I have to go to bed—meetings all day tomorrow. Drinking one celebratory beer here, traded some congratulatory calls.

see, this is baseball crack. By the end of the 1983 WS I was 16 years old and had a solid 7 formative years of this. on the one hand it scarred me for life. On the other hand, that damn organization scarred me. Nonetheless, when these years come around I don’t miss, and recommend strong buys on the merchandise.

ESPN baseball tonight starts now – expect 1/4 NLCS 3/4 ALCS

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:26 AM EDT reply actions

If there are riots when they win the NLCS i shudder to think what might happen if they win the wWS

1980 was really an all-night love-fest. there wasn’t too much out of control stuff. I’d recommend the same.

The biggest loser tonight

might have been John McCain. THe largest metro region in a swing state was watching baseball.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 16, 2008 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

Said largest metro region was not going to be voting for McCain anyway.

by Jay on Oct 16, 2008 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions

but he had to to reduce the margin he’s going to be losing by pulling out of the 5-county region. At this point Obama might have a Rendell-like pad.

And baseball demographics skew right to the groups he needs. McCain needed to shore up the base.

Naturally, the talk on Baseball Tonight is about how the Dodgers lost the series, not how the Phillies won.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 16, 2008 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

thank goodness the Phillies were there to watch it all, up close & personal-like.

Steve Phillips thinks

A. Juan Pierre will be traded (to who?)
B. THe Dodgers will sign CC
C. THe Dodgers will keep Manny, Furcal and Blake.
D. He thinks the ‘big money teams’ will make plays for guys like lowe who the dodgers won’t be interested in but somehow they’ll put up the money for CC

Anyone wonder why Steve Phillips isn’t a GM in baseball any more?

by jemagee on Oct 16, 2008 12:44 AM EDT reply actions

Heard him say on Mike & Mike that his opening offer to Manny would be 3 × 20, willing to go to 3 × 25, but he’d have to swallow hard and talk to ownership to go for 4 × 25. If I were ownership, I’d have to swallow hard to hire Steve Phillips to be my GM.

by Jay on Oct 16, 2008 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Manny at this point should go to the AL and enter the DH phase of his career. If the Mets’ new ballpark is CBP cozy that might make sense too. But that money after what they already have sunk to Beltran is crazy, and I have to believe after this season he’ll want to stay in LA.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 16, 2008 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Yay!

Go team Go!

For Who? My teammates.

For What? To Win.

How Much? Where do I sign?
