How about this?
I've thought about this for about 30 consecutive hours and still can't come up with anything that I'm happy about. I know we discussed it a little bit in the comments section of an earlier post, but I thought I'd take another whack at it.
I think 2 things about Moyer. 1) I really doubt that Cholly will take him out of the rotation. He's done so much good for the team this season, been really consistent, and has only had 2 bad (albeit terrible) starts in a row. 2) I'm not sure that this is such bad logic.
Two more things. 1) I really really really don't think we can start Cole on short rest. Now is not the time to experiment and I'm not sure we are that desperate (yet). 2) I understand that we could hypothetically start Myers 3 times, but I think that putting him in for game one means that Cole doesn't get to start again until game six. And I don't like the idea of possibly not even seeing Cole two times in this series. Plus, more generally, I think we have to just plan on winning now--not later.
So here goes...
Gm 1 - Phillies @ American League - Wed, Oct 22 - HAMELS
Gm 2 - Phillies @ American League - Thu, Oct 23 - MYERS
Gm 3 - American League @ Phillies - Sat, Oct 25 - BLANTON
Gm 4 - American League @ Phillies - Sun, Oct 26 - MOYER
Gm 5 - American League @ Phillies - Mon, Oct 27 - HAMELS
Gm 6 - Phillies @ American League - Wed, Oct 29 - MYERS
Gm 7 - Phillies @ American League - Thu, Oct 30 - BLANTON
Yeah. Not too unexpected. Any better ideas, though?

Hamels on short rest
I wouldn’t go into the series planning to start Hamels on short rest. If the Phils are up 3-0 or 2-1 going into game 4, I’d go with Blanton or Moyer. But if they’re down 1-2 (0-3 is obviously inconceivable) then I would consider it.
I agree with you about flipping Blanton and Moyer, but I’d reserve my decision on the game 7 starter until I see how they do in games 3 and 4.

I don't like Blanton
but I must admit he has performed well in the post-season. You should probably go with him over Moyer, as much as that pains me to type.

Blanton has done surprisngly well
but I do have “low expectations” of him
Don’t start Hamels on short rest, unless it’s a decisive game

manuel quote on rotation:
“Right now,” Manuel said, “I’d say our rotation’s going to be staying about the same. The way we’ve got it set up is just like we’ve always had it. That’s the way we start out, so we’ll see.” (via 700level.com)
it seems like the more time removed I am from moyer’s last outing, the more okay I am with everything being the same. plus I kind of like his experience ect. blah blah blah
I know I’m definitely reading too much into what he said, (but, hey, what else am I supposed to do this week?) but it is interesting to me that he says “our rotation is going to be staying ABOUT the same.” Is he alluding to a moyer-blanton switch? I hope so…

moyer madness
it’s interesting to me that he would not flip flop blanton and moyer. if—and i’m spending a lot of time trying to convince myself that this won’t happen—but, if moyer does go out for game 3 and he shits the bed, then what is the advantage of pitching him in game 3 and not game 4? Game 7 options become moyer on 4 days rest and 3 consecutive turd starts, or blanton on 3 days rest. yuck.
I guess the argument is that if moyer pitches well, we want him going in game 7 rather than fat joe.
ALSO, and by the time everyone reads this is might be moot, but the rays tend to hit RHP better and the sox tend to hit LHP better. So, maybe, moyer game 3 starter if we face the rays and JoBLa as the game 3 starter if we get the sox?
rays vs. LHP- .246 / .330 / .396 TEAM OPS- .726
rays vs. RHP- .267 / .344 / .434 TEAM OPS- .778
sox vs. LHP – .294 / .372 / .477 TEAM OPS- .849
sox vs. RHP – .275 / .353 / .438 TEAM OPS- .792
whatever. none of this matters. jamie moyer is just a code name for don larsen.

You know, this is the best reason to not start Myers in game 1 to get him in 4 and 7 and I am ashamed I didn’t realize it. That means Hamels goes 2 & 6 unless you then start him on 3 days rest, which means he could have gone 1 & 4 to begin with.
