Cole Hamels vs Scott Kazmir

Complete Coverage >

Now they're just playing out the string, I guess.

NO WAIT, It's WORLD SERIES TIME!!!!!

The Phillies, in their first World Series since 1993, facing off against the Rays, who'd never won more than 70 games in a season.  What an awesome matchup.

And the pitching matchup?  Cole Hamels, the 17th overall pick in the 2002 "Moneyball" draft, faces off against Scott Kazmir, the 15th overall selection in the same draft.  By the Mets.  Who traded him for Victor Zambrano.  Can I get a "bahaha"?

It just came across the wire (a/k/a my laptop) that right-handed  batter Chris Coste will be the Phillies DH tonight.  Question the wisdom of this if you want, but I agree with the decision.  The exceedingly unlikelihood of Ruiz being injured and needing to be replaced by Coste, thus forfeiting the DH, is far outweighed by the benefit of Coste and his ability to hit lefties being in the lineup.  Good on you, Charlie.

i think coste at DH is a good idea too. so what happens if ruiz does get injured? coste switches to catch and then the pitcher has to hit? i have never bothered to learn DH rules.

or i guess werth could catch.

Probably good that I have no opinion on any of the umps.

Patience…

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Weird behind the mound camera angle. I think its actually a shade to the left of the mound, which gives you a weird perspective on left handed pitchers.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, what the hell is that thing?

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Caused by this excuse for a ballpark?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Jayson Werth is the biggest threat against left handed pitching?

Apparently not calling the high strike today….

Werth BB… nice.

Can we call them the tampa bay cownose rays now?

LOL @ New Kids on the Block statistic.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

A Howard shift for Utley?

Sadly chase can’t bunt

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Maddon I remember was the first manager to shift against Howard, in that 2006 series.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

It’s really hard to watch with this camera angle. It was not like this in the ALCS, wtf?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

The ALCS was on TBS?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. But isn’t it the same camera platform?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Thought that was strike three.

Werth with no lead.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

zOMG!!! Take that lefty killer kazmir!

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

Damn it Ryan – take a pitch

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Crap third strike call on Burrell.

18 pitches, two runs. That works.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Has Kazmir thrown anything not over the plate?

Oh, and thanks, Pat.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Two good at bats – 3 bad ones – could be worse :)

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Cowbells

They really shouldn’t be allowed in a closed stadium. At some point, wouldn’t a particular noise from the fans, especially in a closed stadium, cross the line?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

THey really shouldn’t allow closed stadiums is what you’re really trying to say

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

So what – the phillies aren’t telegenic enough to introduce themselves?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, they at least acknowledge there’s little history there by having the Rays players intro themselves.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

Could have had backstreet boys do it

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha. Carl Crawford.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

way to go carl crawford

Matt Kemp for president.
Clayton Kershaw for vice.
Adrian Wilson for secretary of defense.

by wongy on Oct 22, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Cole a little too geeked… there we go, strike one.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Took McCarver 3 pitchers to talk about slow starting cole

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t get over how weird it is watching Cole from this angle.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

WTF just happened?

Dammit. Not a great start.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

i guess ryan thought cole was gonna cover

Matt Kemp for president.
Clayton Kershaw for vice.
Adrian Wilson for secretary of defense.

by wongy on Oct 22, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

i guess that could have been worse? (i.e. cole having to be scraped off that weird grass)

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 22, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

It’s some sort of weird new creation – they call it ‘astro turf’

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

haha. “the astroturf” you say?

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I heard today…actually the best part was that their ‘warning track’ isn’t actually warning tack, it’s just astroturf with a ‘carpet’ over it so there’s really no difference to your feet

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Well that sucked.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

Right side defense

Sure does suck, doesn’t it ESPN?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

Can someone explain to me ‘up the middle’ defense versus ‘right side defense’ where as far as I can tell the second baseman is part of both?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

That was better

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

Rollins’ foot was definitely not on the bag when he caught the ball. Don’t tell anyone.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

If they called that, double plays across the league would drop drastically. It’s just one of those unspoken baseball rules, right? right?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, I am cool with it, but that one was fairly blatant.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

McCarver

He really needs to shut up about Hamels and being up and away.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Really needs to shut up

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Cole Hamels, groundball pitcher.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, that was Rollins. Good scouting!

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

JESUS CHRIST DirecTV make it stop

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

Well, at least we have a different DirecTV commercial.

I like speedy Victorino.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

When did pitches closer to the ankles than the knees become strikes?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Nice shane. There should be a lot of hitters counts like that tonight. Keep doing that.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Dude, the phillies are too sexy for these catwalks

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Like miniature golf, only baseball.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

And Joe Buck did not say aything close to what was on the screen regarding the catwalks.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Feliz being patient?!?!

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Is it 2012? Where’s Darren Daulton?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Is there anything MORE obvious in baseball that a guy won’t swing on a 3-0 count?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

A Feliz walk – amazing.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Blizzard-type snow expected for Hell.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kazmir reminds me a lot of Oliver Perez. Disgusting stuff that he can’t throw for strikes.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

So – lots of walks and phillies wins?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good comp. But I hope it’s wrong, given that Perez owns us…

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

THis stadium is just ridiculous

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Yikes. Please don’t get picked off second.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

Wild pitch here would be fine.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Feliz looking like he’s not used to being on base.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Yet ANOTHER thing that CHristopher Walkens embarassing career path is responsible for

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Ruiz vs. lefties… rarely good

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

that would be a subset of Ruiz at the plate right? So really, not surprising

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but check the splits. It’s the difference between run-of-the-mill bad and “Nationals pitcher at the plate bad.”

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

So rarely good is worse than complete suckage?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

3-1 count…do something Ruiz. Walking would be fine.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Sure you can TIm

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Dammit. Had it stolen, and it was ball four.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Remember, it’s ruiz

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice. Juice for Jimbo. Do it to em!

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

I’d really like to see the phillies get to the rays bullpen very early in this game

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

I wasn’t psychologically prepared for the ramifications of Feliz and Ruiz both walking

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

I’m sorry, but has anyone else ever heard of the 80-20 formula in relation to pitching?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

We’re gonna haunt Kazmir’s dreams.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

That was HORRIBLE

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

FUCK

Shouldn’t have gone

Also, I think he was safe.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

The phillies 3rd base coach still sucks – and lousy scouting

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

Fucking shit. Terrible at bat, terrible choice to run.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

That’s 2 for 2 for bad jimmy

I just want to say in advance – sadly- i got a bad feeling shortly

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

That was comprehensively awful. Kazmir struggling with command, Werth on deck… bad choice to swing, worse choice to run.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

Probably the median outcome is Werth walks to force in a run there.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d like to know whose idea it was to run.

Ok, another commercial about baseball and barely a mention of the phillies…Jesus

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Probably that dumbass Steve Smith.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

that sucked. but phillies rock. just checking in, can’t stay (no TV near comp), go phils!

by bugbear on Oct 22, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Cole with the changeup working to Longoria. K.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

I didn’t know that it was possible to be hyperbolic about Evan Longoria, but Buck pulled it off

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

They were called the devil rays last year Buck you moron.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

Was Joe Buck trying to be funny or does he think one year is a long period of time?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Sweet, sweet inning from Cole there.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Well, Cole looks good.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

how could he since he missed high and outside in the first inning?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m done trying to justify anything Buck says, so let’s just say he’s really that dumb.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

are you some sort of martyr type person or something, why would you have ever tried something so sisyphusian?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Cole Hamels heard my fears and as he always does he assuaged them…thank you OKC

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Cole Hamels hears all.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

My biggest fear is that Kazmir settles down and we never get another shot like we had last inning. Cole does not factor into my fears…ever.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Then the game ends 2-0 and you’re a happy camper. So shush already

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s already thrown 40 pitches. “Settles down” probably would mean he finishes six, which is certainly possible.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s one of those ‘excuse me’ doubles isn’t it?

He wears glasses and the devil rays sucked last year and now the rays are good

Maddon MUST be a genius

They are establishing the storyline. They must draw the dichotomy between the urbane, smart Maddon and the redneck, inarticulate Cholly Manuel.

Except most of the media has been telling a different manuel story this past couple days

Hope to see you guys show the NL how real baseball’s played: with 9 guys in the field, and those same 9 in the box.

Wouldn’t the teams in the NL already know how ‘real baseball’ is played, as would AL teams even with interleague, plus with the fact that the DH has only been around a few decades. I’m quite sure that most people know how real baseball is played.

I understand that Cubs fans are sad right now, but come on :)

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoops, I meant "AL", not NL.

But you don’t have to be a dick about it. Came to cheer on your team, thought I’d get a friendly “Hello”, not a “Huh?” or silly comment like that.

I said Huh cause the post didn’t make any sense…I’m not sure how i’m being a dick by being confused by a confusing post…and not it’s not my internet persona, it’s my persona, I prefer people make sense and when they don’t i try to get clarification, i’m nutty that way

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I was trying to make an argument

as a Cubs fan, and NL fan, I would prefer to see the Phils win over the Rays. Just a fan of the Senior Circuit and the non-DH, as opposed to the Junior League. I typed NL instead of AL, holy shit.

Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

by dtpollitt on Oct 22, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t read minds, so I don’t know you made a mistake.

Call the AL the ‘junior circuit’ all you want, they have the better teams, the better money, and the better GMs, and probably more better run teams than in th NL.

The “Junior Circuit” is one of those silly old school perjoratives that should be done away with…the DH has been around long enough that people need to get over it already anyway

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

And like I told you before when you conceded a game way too early (as you seem to do every game) the phillies still get at bats between now and the end of the game, and garza probably won’t make it past the sixth.

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I have not conceded the game. I have merely stated that I am losing confidence. But my confidence means nothing, so I am just saying.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, great catch by Howard there.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Niiiiiiice pull, Ryan.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Can’t shut out Upton all series, let’s get some more runs.

These slow games suck when you have a newborn you know is going to wake up at 5:15 (if not earlier and throughout the night).

Down to my last beer here—a 16 ounce can of Bud I bought to take into a movie (The Dark Knight, I’m pretty sure) three months ago, which I didn’t drink then. It’s pretty cold at least.

Kazmir still in.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Who are you and what have you done with the REAL pedro feliz?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Can Chris Coste get a good swing/at bat tonight?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

He looks TERRIBLE up there.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Feliz with another leadoff hit.

Coste nearly screwed that up, but not yet at least. McCarver points out, correctly, that he can’t hit the heater right now.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:32 PM EDT reply actions

Would you consider Chad Bradford a ROOGY?

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah. I was just thinking it would almost be worth it to send up Dobbs for whoever he faces (Burrell?).

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

At this point i’m just hoping coste only exits the field with one out

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Good Job

He just can’t catch up to the fastball, at all.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Rollins. Try not to look too silly up there.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Again, a walk here that gets Werth to the plate is just fine.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

At least he made some solid contact.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Rollins not hitting well.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Chase’s HR looking ever more huge.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully that is it for Kazmir. 110 pitches should do it…but Maddon is the brilliant one.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

This RBI commercial is not as cool anymore now that we have dispatched the Dodgers.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Obligatory Howard fielding fuck up.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Damn that defense Howard!

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Not a tough play there.

No great defensive play goes unpunished.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

The phillies almost NEVER get that out

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

BAHAHA

One out.

Maddon livid.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Maddon just cursed on TV.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

He made the throw down to second…just barely.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

OK, that’s cool too. Aside from the balk.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

Ryan Howard sagaciously saved his good throws to first for the post season.

by christonabike on Oct 22, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

It boggles my mind how close Howard came to nearly not making that throw in time with probably their slowest runner out there.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

He ’doesn’t make it’ nearly every time

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing to complain about on either of those.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Fox Trax doesn’t look accurate at all.

Nice inning—not many pitches either.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

He’s at 91. Definitely gonna get the nod in the 7th.

I like this conversation with the ump – nice feature!

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

What does it mean that Cole isn’t a reader?

Is Maddon saying he’s illiterate?

Howell’s throwing 2 inches off the ground.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Utley nearly kills Howell with the single there. I’ll take it.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Utley up the middle. Howard up. Closing my eyes, hoping something good will happen.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Him too, probably.

Great steal there!

Bah LOBs

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to bemoan the point about the balk or anything….

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

So they bring in the lefty primarily to face Utley /Howard but he makes werth look stupid?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:51 PM EDT reply actions

Oh it’s true, i’m quite quite sad about opposite day

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Buck could make the point that Ryan Howard poor performance yet the phillies success is a prime example of baseball being a team game.

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

But redeeming now wouldn’t it? I mean wouldn’t you look at Joe just a bit less icky if he made the thought?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Ump looked like he wanted to ring up Utley on that pickoff…

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

Man on third, one out. But…

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Howard swings at a ball that bounced before the plate. Just when you thought you had seen the worst.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus Christ Ryan – that like bounced BEFORE the plate…you really haven’t seen a low pitch you don’t salivate over do you?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

“Get out of here. God dammit.” Who said that?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

That would be Mr. Utley.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve always wondered why people pitch to ryan howard above the knees – he’ll swing at it every time.

Meh

He got to a full count – that’s a successful at bat for him these days

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately true.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard is effing useless.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

That was at least a good pitch. Sort of.

If they wind up losing this game, that might be where it will have happened.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

two separate innings runner at second with no out – doesn’t score

I’m going with those events being more of a problem

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Utley was there with 1 out.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m aware of that – or haven’t you been watching – i wasn’t referring to THIS inning – i was referring to two DIFFERENT innings

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

The phils have had AMPLE scoring opportunities to score tonight – if they lose (i still think a big if) it would be wrong to pin it on any one occurance

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard has to be dropped in the lineup and made the DH. He is doing more harm than good at this point.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not saying bench him but at SOME point you have to go left right left at 3-4-5 don’t you?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

So who wants to be the guy on the Parade float who didn’t do anything all series?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

Does that include the relief pitchers who will never see time?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Has Howell thrown anything above the ankles?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

Well, that one was right there. Damn you Pat!

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, on the 1-1 pitch to burrell called for a strike :)

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Welke really does have a girly voice. Like Gilbert Gottfried without the gravel.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know the Rays very well. Is Howell really this good?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions

Good AB by Pat. Nice job of taking advantage of some questionable calls.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Damn it Pat, swing at bad pitches, a man would swing, a real player would swing, walks are for wussies, you gotta swing when it’s close no matter what…

sorry – doing some chanelling for a moment

Damn, SERIOUS Philly fan

TB may not have the best bullpen, but Maddon manages it better than almost anyone. Most managers don’t recognize that Victorino is strong from the right side.

by christonabike on Oct 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

I’m sure they do but for most of the season victorino batted second so maybe they just wanted to maintain their left handers for the guys after Victorino?

Seriously folks, let’s not over or under rate managers ok :)

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Victorino can do this. He has a knack for the big hit.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

First pitch hacking. Good approach against a pitcher you have never seen before.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

He swung at the first pitch in his last at bat as well didn’t he? Somehow he got stupider as the game progressed

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Shame I have to hate Balfour now. He’s one of my favorites :(

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

I’ll be much more inclined toward this view if I have to see Durbin throwing a meaningful pitch tonight.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously, on most brodcasts, doesn’t the bottom of the 7th start immediately after that stupid song? Fox went to commercial afterwards?

Great pitch Cole! Only 5 Ks tonight.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

The dangerous bottom of the order!

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

Cole is just so nasty in the 7th!

by Erufus2 on Oct 22, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

Fans Navarro. So the bases are empty for the surprisingly difficult Zobrist/Bartlett combo.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

Almost messed up that throw to Howard, but got the out.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Send Cole out for one more. He’s just at 100. It’s the WS.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Do you bring him back for the 8th?

by Erufus2 on Oct 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

That was friggin’ sweet.

Send him back out for the 8th… I think. Only hesitation is that Madson’s better starting an inning.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Without any qualifications as to the brightness of this idea: Cole Hamels is pitching the 8th inning.

by christonabike on Oct 22, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

Yea, let him right the wrong of bartlett’s previous ABs at least.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

I bring him back for the 8th but make sure pitchers are ready – don’t suddenly get them up if cole gets in trouble – be able to pull cole the moment you have to

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

Is he allowed to do that? Get pitchers up before the feces hits the rotating blades? Cos I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen it done…

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s in the book, but charlie got tobaccy juice on it, took some time but the pages are unstuck now

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t subscribe to the idea that Madson is better starting the inning.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

He’s finished – according to Buck.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels is done…i disagree

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Nope, Cole’s apparently done.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

FOX a-holes think Cole is done.

I only want this to be true if it means he’s pitching Game Four.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Ah. Cole is done it looks like. If Madson is still Mad Dog and not just Madson, it should be okay.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

Zobrist is a weird looking dude.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

Didn’t Balfour have a meltdown in the ALCS? MOre of that plz

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

How many major league hitters just can’t hit a fastballs?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

It’s the same number as angels dancing on a pinhead and baseball fans who never give credit to pitchers

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be giving credit to nearly every pitcher in the league if I were to go around covering Coste’s tracks.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Coste has looked foolish tonight.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Well with what Feliz did someone had to balance the scales

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably not worth Coste swinging against a guy like that. If he walks you, he walks you.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

When is someone gonna get impaled by one of these enormous splinters? How has that not happened yet?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

And when it was headed for Lasorda I had such hope

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Will we see Dobbers soon?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt it, just because they have so many lefties. What I would have liked to see was Burrell coming up in a spot where Manuel could have PH’d Dobbs, then made the defensive substitution. But then again Pat walked against the lefty, so that wasn’t to be… probably because Maddon thought the same thing would happen if he brought in a righty to face him.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

“Guys, make this inning quick, Madson doesn’t want to warm up anymore.”

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

Alright Mad Dog. Let’s do that 97 thing again plz.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:21 PM EDT reply actions

It’s the fox gone, i bet you he hits 99 today :)

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

How come even with one of the best bullpens in baseball this year, I still get nervous at times like this? Bad memories, I guess.

Just one memory – one really really really REALLY bad memory

And unlike boston, he was forgiven too soon – tempting fate :)

I’m nervous here too. Very nervous.

I have 2 on right now.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Because even during a season like this, mistakes by the bullpen are just so crucial and memorable.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

JC is warming – he will walk on the rays tank water later

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

Just as long as he doesn’t walk any hitters.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m hoping he has no opportunity

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I imagine he’s getting ready for Pena, which is probably a good idea.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I need him to walk 3 to get some swag actually.

I kid, I kid.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I was gonna say that. Not fair.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

All fastballs so far, I think. Hopefully he has the change too.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

I was gonna say, with that delay, 23 home runs for a team in the regular season has to be bad

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Is it somehow bigoted to say that Iwamura’s hitting style reminds me of Iguchi?

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Not any more bigoted than it is to say Daisuke and Kuroda have similar wind ups.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. I imagine it’s just how mechanics are taught over there.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Iwamura reminds me more of Ichiro or Kaz Matsui, mainly because they hit from the left side.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Iwamura refuses to get out. Damn.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

This guy is a tough, tough out. Really impressive. I agree with jem—I wish we’d gotten him a couple yrs back.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

NIce… got him with the change.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

They are going after him

by Erufus2 on Oct 22, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Close on 0-2 there.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

That was strike 3. I don’t care what pitch trax says.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

He got it anyway

Madson is the shiz

I still want 12 rays

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

runs, not rays

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously, not a single phils pitch on fox trax has been close has it?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

there were a couple in the “controversial Rays’ sixth” as we will be reminded of….

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Got him. Mad Dog is still mad it seems.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

Those Rayhawks are silly, btw

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

So are rubber duckies, you could say.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Damnit you’re right. A little different though.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

okay, Phils, so let’s regress to the RISP mean in the top of the 9th.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

Will we see “Lights Out” Lidge or nail-biter Lidge?

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

As long as the outcome is the same i don’t mind all tht much

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Rollins continuing to suh-huck. Takes two meatballs, swings at the one at his eyes. One out.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Rollins swings at crap and takes good pitches. Good stuff. Thanks for showing up JRoll.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Rollins just overmatched tonight. Second 3-pitch strikeout.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

That slow-mo replay did no favors for Jimmy. Like magnifying a piece of poop.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s you see the flies and corn chunks though.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Not much mystery to Balfour.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

Tonight Rollins ~= Upton

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

Ground rule double for Werth.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Automatic double.

FIXED!

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The ground rules call that a double. Good game for Werth tonight.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Victory from the jaws of defeat.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Oh god don’t show me these douches any more than you have to

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

Didn’t even hit catwalks A or C

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions

It’s sad that people walk Utley to get to Howard

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

Howard should harness the hurt he feels from being dissed and turn it into a 400 foot fly ball to right or left.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

IBB for Utley.

Then they’ll bring in the lefty for Howard.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

And he won’t throw anything at him but he’ll probably still K and then they have to switch pitchers again or leave a lefty in to face Burrell….oh wait.

GOD DAMN IT

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard OPS’d .922 against LHP in 2006. So he can do it.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

What’s he doing again in 2008?

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

.745, but it’s all SLG

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Trevor Miller has the face of a guy the Phils would kill.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

Really? I think he has the face of someone like Tim Redding who has the face of someone the phillies should kill, but are actually owned by.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Boy I would love to see the real MVP Howard now. C’mon big guy!

by Erufus2 on Oct 22, 2008 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

ot: when did the operative four-letter word for frustration migrate from the s-word to the f-word?

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

It’s an Australian thing.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I like to use frack cause it’s not really cursing

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

If you throw it, Howard will swing at it.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

I could throw a beachball by him left-handed.

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Woah! A breaking ball! No way!

by Walcott on Oct 22, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

He looked at the best pitch he will see all night.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

why is he arguning!!?!?

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Had one to hit on 1-1. Dammit.

Just totally off right now.

Holy shit—another fastball right down the pike.

Man, when he’s off, he is OFF.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

September called. It wants to stuff April and October Ryan Howard into the trunk of the car and drive to Tijuana.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Jon Miller: “FASTBALL! right down the middle, strike 3 called.”

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

Unbelievable. Like I said. He needs to be dropped in the order.

There is no arguing that one Ryan. You suck right now.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

Wheeler coming in.

There’s definitely reason to fear this… but I’d seriously, seriously consider Dobbs here. No way Manuel does it, but I think I would.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

Fuel-to-the-fire Wheeler?

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Now we get to see that piece of shit who fills in for Burrell in left.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

so who will be up? It is so so time?

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

I hit Dobbs, and hold my breath with either him or Taguchi in LF.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

But no, it’s effing Bruntlett.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

This just stinks.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

This Pat Burrell thing HAS to stop

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

Good, now Bruntetts failure will only be more frustrating.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

does chollie bust out the squeeze here?

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

On a 1-2 count? WIth the phils bunting history? God I hope not

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

you like the popups so much?

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You know – Maddons could have been super tricky and just given the IBB to Howard and let Balfour make Bruntlett his bitch

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

I hate to say this but i can’t watch any more

by jemagee on Oct 22, 2008 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

Phillies w/RISP = 0 for 13.

Ouch.

by boteman on Oct 22, 2008 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

Balls. What an awful decision there.

You know, Jenkins—Jenkins!—is probably a better LF than Bruntlett anyway. You could PH either of the two better lefty bats, and then upgrade defensively!

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

I’m gonna need WebMD starting now.

by Have a Seat on Oct 22, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 22, 2008 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

Close to vomiting.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:54 PM EDT reply actions

What is it, the beer, or the ballgame?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 22, 2008 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

6 pitches, 6 strikes?

by char6587 on Oct 22, 2008 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Threw one ball to Longoria.

by dajafi on Oct 22, 2008 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Come on, you can do it!!!!

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions

Dang. Please Please Please one more strike.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions

Phillies win, despite sucking at the plate. I love it.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

GAME!!!!

Man, Feliz scared me there.

WE WIN WE WIN!!!!

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

Man, DRaysBay is gonna be pissed!

by boteman on Oct 23, 2008 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Home field advantage is OURS!!!

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

That game was larceny. I hope tomorrow night the offense wakes up.

Tres mas, hermanos.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

Guess you were right Jem, 3 held up. My bad dawg…

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

For me, the story of the game is in this detail: foul pop fly over to the stands. Ryan Howard reaches in two rows and grabs it. Should that happen in Philadelphia, which is doubtful, those fans who could have interfered would be marked.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

oh, and also that the president of Taco Bell has a thick English accent and muffed the date the free taco is on on national TV. I wonder if they will now give out free tacos on Nov. 28 as well.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

so pleasing

I just love it !!!!. Tonight was a gift. I really see an offensive eruption tomorrow, because the mettle has been tested and the Rays folded. I just don’t think Shields is the reincarnation of Gibson/Koufax that McCarver/Buck and all the other drooling idiots make him out to be and I think Myers is pumped in a good way, as everyone has talked about the huge dropoff after Cole (not so). By their reckoning David Price after pitching 2 innings in the post season is Dennis Eckersly on steroids while Lidge now 50 for 50 is old news – what crap (by the way Joe Savery in our organization from Rice/not Vanderbilt throws mid 90"s – maybe we should have brought him up and turned the games over to him). Call me optimistic, a jinx, whatever, but I predict Phillies 11-3 tomorrow in a laugher with Dobbs, Rollins, Utley and Victorino providing the big punch (Howard looks like April reincarnated – hopeless at this point and great trade commodity in offseason). And by the way, since “they shoot horses don’t they” isn’t it just time tro euthanize Tim McCarver.
