Brett Myers vs James Shields

Complete Coverage >

Last night was basically a must-win for the Phillies, and win they did behind the brilliant pitching of Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, and Brad Lidge, and the occasionally timely hitting of Chase Utley and Jayson Werth.

Tonight, the tables are turned, and the Rays are the ones in the must-win situation; lose, and they face the specter of going into Philadelphia down 0-2, and needing to win two out of three games just to survive.

Mr. Flighty himself, Brett Myers, goes for the Phillies tonight.  I think this is almost an ideal situation for Myers and his ego; they don't HAVE TO have this game, but if they win, Brett can be the rock star hero.  BIG GAME James Shields goes for the Rays.

Silly Goose Prediction Time: Phils win 6-4, Howard takes Shields deep, Longoria goes longorious for the Rays.

By the way, these game threads with over 500 comments  have recently been nuking my five year old laptop.  Keep an eye out for an overflow comment thread or two to spring up somewhere during tonight's action.

Perhaps the commenters mirror the fan base in the stands (per an earlier comment here).

by Have a Seat on Oct 23, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The worst part is technical: last night the original game thread bested 1050 posts by the 3rd inning, so they started a second thread. The overwhelming majority of posts are one or two words and, by my measure, add little to the discussion. A bit of restraint might have reduced load times and bandwidth consumption.

was mccarver trying to play the “ironic comment” game by talking about how romero always walks the first guy?

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 11:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

McCarver is fantastic that way.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Umpire was almost trying to hex Utley there.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Important trivia: Tim McC has never had a mohawk.

by boteman on Oct 23, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

but he did do the male down there rayhawk

by pjnc2003 on Oct 23, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Steve Carlton told him to, I bet he’d get one. Right now.

How is this not a save opportunity?

by christonabike on Oct 23, 2008 11:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, i think they are wrong about that

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

probably they still thought it was a 4 run lead b/c the idea of a brunt pinch hit HR is totally unbelievable

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lead was more than 3 when he came into the game.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh right, he gave up the HR. my bad.

by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, of course.

by christonabike on Oct 23, 2008 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ruiz absolutely unconscious tonight.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Leadoff man on 2nd…ho hum….

Chooch, you complete me.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The.

He was hit by that pitch.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There was a word before “The” and another after it, btw.

Home ump costs us another

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This homeplate umpire is really fucking up seriously tonight.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this ump is terrible…

by quakerfan on Oct 23, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You could make a solid argument that this ump has cost us a run…he might be on his way to costing us more.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And Rollins skies out on Ball Four. Appropriate.

This game really has been a succession of kicks to the junk.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s unacceptable. I hope this fucking ump pays for his work tonight.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The game of the unearned run.

by boteman on Oct 23, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Werth with a hit or error. Run scores.

Tying run coming up.

Should be lead run coming up.

Death to the home plate ump.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Should be first and third…

by quakerfan on Oct 23, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So now it SHOULD be 3-2 with a runners on 1st and 3rd no outs.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But Kerwin (sp?) Danley didn’t want it to be so, and it wasn’t so.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and 1-2 on Utley, but whatever.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Game over.

Tough to beat both a good team and mental defective umpires.

Series tied 1-1 going home.

by dajafi on Oct 23, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And that would have tied the game. This ump should be taken out back and shot. Thanks for the great work, go to hell.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice, how Fox cuts away from their own postgame interview to go to an ad.

by boteman on Oct 23, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would have been fine with losing, but when you are clearly robbed on two separate occasions, in key spots, by the homeplate ump it is especially hard to swallow.

I hope Moyer is competent out there whenever he does end up pitching…

by FuquaManuel on Oct 23, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Introductions

Kerwin Danley, meet Bruce Froemming.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Moyer getting 15 outs is the canary in the coal mine of this WS.

All in all, ok to come out of Tampa 1-1,

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

easily could be up 2-0… with different ump they could have been.

they accomplished what was necessary in Tampa by getting a win.

Hopefully OFJOAB will ignite some bats on saturday.

Underdog Rays? says Jeannine Zelasko.

Yo lady, Vegas has the Phils as underdogs.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 23, 2008 11:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The pole sucking of the phenom is hilarious.

He just gave up two runs and got lucky to not have a worse outcome. I think the Phils are in good shape. The Phillies are a couple of hits from two easy victories. They need to move Shane up for Game 3 and maybe have Jroll lay a bunt or two? Another RHP starting for the Rays brings a comfort zone to the lineup. I like the way Howard looked tonight. And they did have nine hits and got a ton of baserunners in scoring position. The Rays aren’t going to live dangerously for the next three games.
