World Series Game Thread, Game Two - Phillies at Rays
Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays, Oct 23, 2008 8:29 PM EDT
Last night was basically a must-win for the Phillies, and win they did behind the brilliant pitching of Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, and Brad Lidge, and the occasionally timely hitting of Chase Utley and Jayson Werth.
Tonight, the tables are turned, and the Rays are the ones in the must-win situation; lose, and they face the specter of going into Philadelphia down 0-2, and needing to win two out of three games just to survive.
Mr. Flighty himself, Brett Myers, goes for the Phillies tonight. I think this is almost an ideal situation for Myers and his ego; they don't HAVE TO have this game, but if they win, Brett can be the rock star hero. BIG GAME James Shields goes for the Rays.
Silly Goose Prediction Time: Phils win 6-4, Howard takes Shields deep, Longoria goes longorious for the Rays.
By the way, these game threads with over 500 comments have recently been nuking my five year old laptop. Keep an eye out for an overflow comment thread or two to spring up somewhere during tonight's action.

Any quick predicts?
I think Howard goes deep tonight. I also think Dobbs has a 2 run bouble.

Almost 20 pitches for Shields here

Awful. Really awful start. I can’t say I didn’t expect something along these lines.
The Office is on at 9 right?
Myers really not a great first-inning pitcher. If they get this next one and then nothing else, I can live with that.
Joe Buck is really excited about these RBI groundouts. Jeez Joe, it’s not like the Phillies aren’t happy about that outcome as well.
Had a really crappy first inning against Milwaukee in Game 2 NLDS, too. He MAY settle in.

WHY CAN'T US?
I now define a successful Howard AB as one where he sees more than four pitches.
This doesn’t look like it’s going to be a successful AB.
FARG!!!!
Well, like 28 pitches for Shields.

The good news is that Myers actually looks pretty calm and isn’t pitching too bad. Lots of other variables not going our way right now.
did they really just call ruiz venezuelan again?

We’re both bad and unlucky tonight.

If you really want to see unbridled cursing, go check out the DRaysBay game thread. At least 15 posts the instant after any unpleasantness occurs with one long, drawn out F-bomb. It got too much for me so I choose the refreshing pages of The Good Phight.
Perhaps the commenters mirror the fan base in the stands (per an earlier comment here).
in other words, this board tries to stay reasonably classy.

The worst part is technical: last night the original game thread bested 1050 posts by the 3rd inning, so they started a second thread. The overwhelming majority of posts are one or two words and, by my measure, add little to the discussion. A bit of restraint might have reduced load times and bandwidth consumption.
Just sayin’

Probably it will be. But I don’t feel great about the prospect of the multiple reliever fails that would be needed to come back.
Wow. Dobbs has not made contact yet I don’t think. And his misses have been by like a foot each. he’s way off.
i wonder if being DH is that off-putting … coste looked really bad too.

if you pitch six innings (or more) and give up 3 runs (or less) it’s a “quality start”
by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
that’s why it’s a good idea to try and steal second with two outs, right? we’d have a run (presuming vic would’ve been safe)
by Putsy Caballero. on Oct 23, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions
Problem is that if you do that and switch Dobbs into the field, you lose the DH.
Probably worth it, though.

theoretically it’s more useful than wins & losses because you can pitch like crap & get a win (or pitch great & get no run support) but if you get a QS than it’s known that you at least got your team “in a position to win the ballgame” (or however that cliche goes)

after Howard’s double, I believe that was the longest hit ball the Phils have had tonight. Yet another thing we normally see that hasn’t really happened in the first two games.

there clearly is a weird energy flow in the postseason that has drained all of Rollins’ offensive prowess to the 9-hole hitter. Ruiz tonight, Myers in the NLCS.

Good signs
Howard looks like he’s feeling comfortable again. Utley is hitting. Shane is hitting. And every Phillies’ hitter will feel more comfortable at home. As for the Rays, their vaunted offense has been a dud so far. They’ve scratched out runs, yes, but no xbase hits. Rollins can’t get much worse?
Howard didn’t look too comfortable in that last AB.

Werth is lost, Burrell a non-factor, Feliz, etc. And the bench has been worthless. Moyer on the mound in game 3. They really must score tonight so my stomach muscles can unclench.

an injustice, true. Culturally we should switch the street connotations of “BJ” and “Melvin” so that his given name would sound “cool” and that someone could give me a Melvin to relieve this pressure.

The pole sucking of the phenom is hilarious.
He just gave up two runs and got lucky to not have a worse outcome. I think the Phils are in good shape. The Phillies are a couple of hits from two easy victories. They need to move Shane up for Game 3 and maybe have Jroll lay a bunt or two? Another RHP starting for the Rays brings a comfort zone to the lineup. I like the way Howard looked tonight. And they did have nine hits and got a ton of baserunners in scoring position. The Rays aren’t going to live dangerously for the next three games.
