World Series Game Thread, Game Five - Rays at Phillies
Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 29, 2008 8:37 PM EDT
It's been 28 years since the Phillies played a World Series clinching game. Of course, we all know what happened that glorious evening. And we hope for the same tonight.
They could hardly have asked for a better alignment of circumstances -- in their home park, with lefty ace Cole Hamels on the mound, on full rest. Of course it's baseball, and anything can happen, but you're a hardened pessimist if you're not at least cautiously optimistic right now...
One more game. 27 outs. Finish it.

Last night at the game there were like 5 Rays fans with cow bells and they were swinging them around … this old man probably in his 60s stands up turns around and holds up a mini Liberty Bell and starts swinging it … funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

Really, I wouldn’t mind hearing that Joe Buck got busted for trying to buy kiddie porn. Then sent to prison with a bunch of real criminals.
I think he isn’t throwing that many—McCarver puts it on the weather, but for whatever reason, it’s been mostly fastballs that I’ve seen.
he’s on now, I think he’s doing more innings in the playoffs b/c he doesn’t have to do the TV as well.

Just arrived on the thread -- Utley's double play -- spectacular
It was not, perhaps, Rose catching the ball off of Boone’s glove, but that was one of the defensive plays of the year for the Phils.

Another reason why they should play afternoon WS games. Had this thing been scheduled or moved up to 3 p.m. this could have been done.
Even if you got afternoon world series games, they would be on the weekends, and thus had no impact on tonight (but would have made saturday easier)
The only solution really is that all teams build domes of course
by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions
well, the other plus is that if the weather in the afternoon is bad, you have a chance to get the game in later and keep rotations set.

Ugh.
I just feel violated…but I can’t say deep down I thought this was gonna be easy…without some wild turn of events like this.

MLB hates us and will never end the game and thus, no WS winner.
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
When was the last time MLB didn’t screw the pooch on a difficult decision?

These frustrations will make the ultimate victory for the Phils that much more sweet.

Do either of you guys know the rules regarding delays for the WS?
They have to play this for 9 full innings, right?
Wait, misunderstood the question. Yes. THey will resume from the bottom of the 6th whenever possible. Be it tonight or 3 days from now.

One team was in the lead after 5 innings – it was just the wrong one
If the rays hadn’t scored i bet you money this game would still be going on
by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I think calling it was the right decision; it was just shitty timing.
I also believe that they’d still be playing had Upton not scored.
Upton scoring allowed Selig to take the chickenshit way out.

ABSOLUTELY
i told me wife that no umpire in the US is calling that game while the Phils are ahead
"Watching Big Ben kiss the canvas nine times in Philly was like watching a guy fighting a school of sharks -- with everyone rooting for the sharks."
no, they don’t. they can’t end the game as a tie, though. so, theoretically, if they un-suspend the game, stairs or someone hits a homerun, then it starts raining again, that could be game.
but the exception is, if the away team goes ahead before the home team gets 3 outs to try and respond, then the game is still suspended.
A rule that was instituted in 2007 – just for such a phils screwing event
by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Pre 2007 – if this game was called – it would go to the last completed inning – the 5th inning – the phillis would be the winners….2007 season they instituted this suspended rule thing.

game off
Just saw it on the local news here.
Unprecedented. I don’t really blame anyone as far as the decisions tonight… but this is what happens when you let television dictate the conditions of the entire postseason.
Oh I blame the timing…i’m sorry – the weather conditions didn’t change between the start of the top of the sixth and the end of the top of the sixth – the only thing that changed was the score – if the rays didn’t score in the 6th the game continues – and that’s BULL SHIT

From Jayson Stark:
"And now for yet another complication: The Rays checked out of their hotel in center-city Philadelphia, in anticipation of flying home after the game — and they can’t get back in, because the hotel is sold out.
They’re scrambling to find rooms — somewhere — as we speak."

Selig just said a rain delay could have lasted 3 days if the Phils were leading. No way would the game have been called
I’m sorry, but that doesn’t exactly make his case – unless the case he’s making is that we wanted to give the Rays every chance to tie the game and then end up screwing the phillies

How does this play out. Let’s assume no game tomorrow, they play Wed. Cole threw 75 pitches. Can he come back Wed? Should he?
On the plus side Madson recharges.
Cole does not come back out.

Q: Why not call the game the inning earlier?
A: “The groundskeepers did a great job, told us the field is OK repeatedly. Then they told us after the 6th that conditions had deteriorated, so that was it.”

Philly.com weather report
AccuWeather.com meteorologist Carl Erickson, reporting from State College , said there’s a developing storm moving northward that will continue to intensify tonight and into the day tomorrow.
"We’ll get a pretty good soaking tonight," Erickson said.
Rain will begin to taper off in the mid-afternoon Tuesday, but it won’t be until 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow that things will completely dry out, he said.
Temperatures will hover in the upper 30s to 40s during the day Tuesday. Temps will be in the upper 30s Tuesday night.
So tomorrow night?
Q: Would the remainder of the game be moved to Tampa?
A: No, no. We’ll celebrate Thanksgiving in Philly if necessary.
Anyone ever read the book interface? BUd really needs one of those control chips…

He keep saying that the forecasts were wrong. He says he never had any indication the rain would get as bad as it was. Groundskeeper told him after every inning that the field would be fine. But he says it deteriorated very quickly.

Q: Is the way the game was called a rule or just your judgement.

At least my kid might get to see the end of the game, and possibly a win

Selig's PC in a nutshell
- Who knows when the game will resume, but it will be in Philly and will be at night.
- Everything is the weather forecasters’ fault.
- He never would have allowed the game to end before 9 innings
Bud Selig called a tie in a baseball game – is anyone surprised by anything he over sees any more?
I mean yes it’s popular but is any league run by a bigger collection of ass turds than MLB?

im not exactly what you guys would have preferred, besides just postponing the game from the outset?
Suspend it earlier, don’t wait for the rays to tie the game – don’t make this utter bullshit – don’t MAKE UP RULES AS YOU GO ALONG – which is basically what selig admitted doing…if the rays HADNT scored in the top of the 6th the game would have kept going and everyone know it…
