World Series Game Thread, Game Five - Rays at Phillies

Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 29, 2008 8:37 PM EDT

Next Game

Tampa Bay Rays
@ Philadelphia Phillies

Monday, Oct 27, 2008, 8:29 PM EDT
Citizens Bank Park

Scott Kazmir vs Cole Hamels

Complete Coverage >

It's been 28 years since the Phillies played a World Series clinching game.  Of course, we all know what happened that glorious evening.  And we hope for the same tonight.

They could hardly have asked for a better alignment of circumstances -- in their home park, with lefty ace Cole Hamels on the mound, on full rest.  Of course it's baseball, and anything can happen, but you're a hardened pessimist if you're not at least cautiously optimistic right now...

One more game.  27 outs.  Finish it.

Hey Phillies…uh…I know I have been asking for a lot lately, but could you guys do me a solid and back Cole up with about 8 runs tonight? I’ll be your best friend…

Meanwhile, Cole, can you just do your thing tonight? Thanks.

Signed,

FuquaManuel

Last night at the game there were like 5 Rays fans with cow bells and they were swinging them around … this old man probably in his 60s stands up turns around and holds up a mini Liberty Bell and starts swinging it … funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

They usually have a crappy 1st, then settle down. The Phils were good to jump on him early, of course it’s not hard when he keeps walking everybody.

by Have a Seat on Oct 27, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

Why the mutha fucking hell does ANYBODY slide into first base?!!!

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

There’s been some recent studies….

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

…that show that a runner is allowed to overrun 1B?

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, about the benefits of sliding, enver read them, know they are out there – only a couple months old

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The instant that the batter-runner stops applying thrust via his legs he starts to slow down. Sliding across the dirt only decelerates him faster. You run as fast as you can to 1B no matter what, including Carl Crawford.

The laws of physics still apply.

Just arrived on the thread -- Utley's double play -- spectacular

It was not, perhaps, Rose catching the ball off of Boone’s glove, but that was one of the defensive plays of the year for the Phils.

Remember the Phitans

Higher degree of difficulty for utley in my opinion, more ‘historic’ Rose/Boone but not exactly the grace and skill of what Utley did

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kind of what I was thinking. The Rose play was more dramatic, but for degree of difficulty, the Utley play was probably higher.

no, they don’t. they can’t end the game as a tie, though. so, theoretically, if they un-suspend the game, stairs or someone hits a homerun, then it starts raining again, that could be game.

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Kick Bud Selig in the ass line starts behind me

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ll bend the fans over forward to show them how sensitive they are.

Q: Why not call the game the inning earlier?

A: “The groundskeepers did a great job, told us the field is OK repeatedly. Then they told us after the 6th that conditions had deteriorated, so that was it.”

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Bud knows they didn’t finish the 6th right?

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Fast typing. After the T6.

Philly.com weather report
AccuWeather.com meteorologist Carl Erickson, reporting from State College , said there’s a developing storm moving northward that will continue to intensify tonight and into the day tomorrow.

"We’ll get a pretty good soaking tonight," Erickson said.

Rain will begin to taper off in the mid-afternoon Tuesday, but it won’t be until 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow that things will completely dry out, he said.

Temperatures will hover in the upper 30s to 40s during the day Tuesday. Temps will be in the upper 30s Tuesday night.

So tomorrow night?

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Q: Would the remainder of the game be moved to Tampa?

A: No, no. We’ll celebrate Thanksgiving in Philly if necessary.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone ever read the book interface? BUd really needs one of those control chips…

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It will definitely resume as a night game.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

Not for TV, but because fans “paid for a night game”

LOL?!

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. I think a day game solves the problem of cold weather making pitches stink-o, plus it’s just a jolly good excuse for skipping out of work.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

the fans make this game so wonderful

Jumbo-tron at CBP says Tomorrow 8pm at the earliest

"I need to do a better job of putting players in the right position to perennially come up short of expectations"

by Whodie126 on Oct 27, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

If they knew it was going to rain why didn’t they move the start time up?

by jl323 on Oct 27, 2008 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Fans paid for a night game

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Is that what Bud said?

by PhillyFriar on Oct 27, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup. Literally.

Not in regards to moving up the time of tonight’s game…. but in regards to resuming the game.

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you couldn’t make this stuff up.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 27, 2008 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I tuned in late to t his Selig-palooza… did anyone ask him if he thought about moving the start time up?

by PhillyFriar on Oct 27, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

No, but his answers sound like thinly veiled ways of stating that TV dictates all.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Bud Selig hhas issues when he delivers prepared statements – when he’s having to answer off the cuff – it’s bound to be comical

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He keep saying that the forecasts were wrong. He says he never had any indication the rain would get as bad as it was. Groundskeeper told him after every inning that the field would be fine. But he says it deteriorated very quickly.

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

even though he uses 3 different forecasting systems

by Alex Falzone on Oct 27, 2008 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

ANd keeps trying to joke about how he has nothing to nice to say about meteorologists… what an idiot.

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

local weatherfolks in Philadelphia were calling this in the 5 p.m. hour—ok to start, but driving rain by 10 p.m. I think that’s what I just saw.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 27, 2008 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Q: Is the way the game was called a rule or just your judgement.

Selig: Um…well…um…uhh…I just did not want the World Series to end this way.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

BUd likes ties

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

did anyone, though?

by char6587 on Oct 27, 2008 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

At least my kid might get to see the end of the game, and possibly a win

It is an ill wind that does not blow someone some good.

Selig's PC in a nutshell

- Who knows when the game will resume, but it will be in Philly and will be at night.

- Everything is the weather forecasters’ fault.

- He never would have allowed the game to end before 9 innings

by JasonB on Oct 27, 2008 11:40 PM EDT reply actions

- Meaningful discussions

- Er…um…uh…well…uhhh….

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Bud Selig called a tie in a baseball game – is anyone surprised by anything he over sees any more?

I mean yes it’s popular but is any league run by a bigger collection of ass turds than MLB?

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

im not exactly what you guys would have preferred, besides just postponing the game from the outset?

by char6587 on Oct 27, 2008 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not just that, it’s his spineless excuse making instead of just muscling up and admitting the truth about what dictates his decisions. One can almost detect the hand that runs his puppet.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Suspend it earlier, don’t wait for the rays to tie the game – don’t make this utter bullshit – don’t MAKE UP RULES AS YOU GO ALONG – which is basically what selig admitted doing…if the rays HADNT scored in the top of the 6th the game would have kept going and everyone know it…

by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I got my fill of Bud Selig and Bob Dupuy when they hemmed and hawed and made a zillion excuses and jerked around the DC baseball commission over the Expos/Nationals move and contract for their new ballpark.

Assclowns of the first order, if not higher.

by boteman on Oct 27, 2008 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

don’t know why he’s even taking questions…just make a statement and say goodnight. No upside to q&a

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 27, 2008 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

screw it

water under the bridge, let’s get the bats out whenever and kick their asses. On to game 5.1.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 27, 2008 11:43 PM EDT reply actions

Well, we are gonna get a 3 inning blitz for the World Series title on Tuesday…er…Wednesday? Phillies will be leading off with Hamels spot in the order.

Should be exciting. I hope we can get it done here at home.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 27, 2008 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

We had to pull Cole Hamles early – kazmir was total shit

And the rays can now throw price at us.

Fun

Charlie Manuel refused to address the media?

I like him more now than ever before.
