World Series Game Thread, Game Five - Rays at Phillies
Tampa Bay Rays at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 29, 2008 8:37 PM EDT
It's been 28 years since the Phillies played a World Series clinching game. Of course, we all know what happened that glorious evening. And we hope for the same tonight.
They could hardly have asked for a better alignment of circumstances -- in their home park, with lefty ace Cole Hamels on the mound, on full rest. Of course it's baseball, and anything can happen, but you're a hardened pessimist if you're not at least cautiously optimistic right now...
One more game. 27 outs. Finish it.

Hey Phillies…uh…I know I have been asking for a lot lately, but could you guys do me a solid and back Cole up with about 8 runs tonight? I’ll be your best friend…
Meanwhile, Cole, can you just do your thing tonight? Thanks.
Signed,
FuquaManuel

The instant that the batter-runner stops applying thrust via his legs he starts to slow down. Sliding across the dirt only decelerates him faster. You run as fast as you can to 1B no matter what, including Carl Crawford.

It was not, perhaps, Rose catching the ball off of Boone’s glove, but that was one of the defensive plays of the year for the Phils.

While it may not be as well known, it seems to me that the Umpire CBA with MLB is pretty fracking bad as well.
No back to back world series? Are you kidding me?

They keep running a clip of him being interviewed on XM175 in which he says something about “the facts do not support changing the times when the games are aired…the networks have to air the games when they make financial sense.”

MLB hates us and will never end the game and thus, no WS winner.

When was the last time MLB didn’t screw the pooch on a difficult decision?

These frustrations will make the ultimate victory for the Phils that much more sweet.

I hope so! Wishing on my lucky stars that the opposite is not true.

Do either of you guys know the rules regarding delays for the WS?
They have to play this for 9 full innings, right?
by NittanyCub on Oct 27, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Wait, misunderstood the question. Yes. THey will resume from the bottom of the 6th whenever possible. Be it tonight or 3 days from now.

had one team been in the lead the game couldv been called for the leading team, after 5 innings.
by spinz on Oct 27, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
One team was in the lead after 5 innings – it was just the wrong one
If the rays hadn’t scored i bet you money this game would still be going on

I think calling it was the right decision; it was just shitty timing.
I also believe that they’d still be playing had Upton not scored.
Upton scoring allowed Selig to take the chickenshit way out.

ABSOLUTELY
i told me wife that no umpire in the US is calling that game while the Phils are ahead

no, they don’t. they can’t end the game as a tie, though. so, theoretically, if they un-suspend the game, stairs or someone hits a homerun, then it starts raining again, that could be game.
by char6587 on Oct 27, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but the exception is, if the away team goes ahead before the home team gets 3 outs to try and respond, then the game is still suspended.

A rule that was instituted in 2007 – just for such a phils screwing event
by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
how does the above rule screw the phillies?
by char6587 on Oct 27, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pre 2007 – if this game was called – it would go to the last completed inning – the 5th inning – the phillis would be the winners….2007 season they instituted this suspended rule thing.
by jemagee on Oct 27, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
any bets before how long its officially suspended? 5 mins? 10 mins?
by spinz on Oct 27, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs

damn rain might deprive him of his chance to see a modern equivalent of the Willie Wilson K. That’s what sucks the most about this.
