It's Official: No Game Tonight

Howard Eskin is reporting that at 2pm the Commissioner's office is going to cancel the game tonight.  The weather doesn't look great for tomorrow, so who knows when this game is going to be played?

Hizzoner For Life Most Holy Commish Bud Selig is purported to be on Charlie Steiner’s show on XM175 this noon hour, but with 6 minutes left in said hour, nothing yet.

I’ll report back here if I hear something definite. Unless I have to cut out and be productive elsewhere. :-)

by boteman on Oct 28, 2008 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Per Charlie Steiner on XM175, Allan H. “Bud” Selig states that Game 5 will NOT resume tonight. Tentatively gonna try for Wednesday night, weather permitting, plus the usual qualifiers and indefinite promises.

if they announce this delay

Without talking about the potential rest of the series, that just continues to make MLB look stupid

by TallMatt on Oct 28, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Not that I’m wishing for this by any stretch… but if this gets pushed back enough, how about bringing Hamels back for a game 7?

by Carlos del Vaca on Oct 28, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

if it gets pushed back enough bring him in for game 6 … or to finish game 5 he’s technically still in the game. No one knows what these idiots at MLB are going to do. Honestly the weather is suppose to get better tonight unlike last night where it was known to get worse. I say finish the 2.5 innings tonight so we can have our parade.

Hamels

Hamels almost certainly won’t finish game 5 no matter how long it’s pushed back. He’s due to lead off the bottom of the 6th. (Unless Selig does the right thing and wipes out the top of the 6th…)

by phatj on Oct 28, 2008 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i was more or less joking … I don’t know why people are talking about game 7 already when game 5 isn’t even over yet it’s quite annoying. I have faith in this teams ability to close this series out.

You have yet again upset William Penn with a premature mention of the P word. Have you learned nothing from this weather?

From now on Billy Penn is Vigo and we all must be Janosz……Ghost Busters II anyone?

I received a text message from 950 Confirming no game tonight…

by jemagee on Oct 28, 2008 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

What are the chances that it’s a beautiful fall evening tonight? I’d say 90% to 95%.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 28, 2008 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Where “beautiful” means winds 20-25 mph gusting to 40-45 mph and bitter cold air? That makes for enjoyable baseball?

Or are you simply over it all and want it to be finished as quickly as possible?

by boteman on Oct 28, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

No, beautiful being no wind, clear skies, 50 degrees, and no precipitation. I know that’s not the forecast right now, but Phillies fan luck makes it a certainty.

good news

Hamels can pitch if necessary in a Game 7—-nice safety valve

by djmarco on Oct 28, 2008 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

just read

that nothing official, but that there is talk that it will be restored. Only makes sense since it’s a travel day.

by djmarco on Oct 28, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know why anyone is worried about game 7 we are the better team we will win the rest of game 5.

Agreed. Possibly one good thing to come of this delay is some of us can clear our heads, stop panicking, and realize that what you say is the truth.

What is clutch? Rate the Phillies...

Hi!
I’m Kristin, a University of Pennsylvania psychology student and a Phillies fan. I am currently conducting an honors thesis study on clutch ability and psychological characteristics of Major league baseball players. I made a survey asking fans to rate players from various teams on certain characteristics. One of these teams is the Phillies and it would be great to have some people who read this blog, since you are huge Phillies fans, to fill out my survey. Here is some background info:
What is "clutch"? What players are considered "clutch" performers? What players are "gritty" or have natural talent? Are these players also "clutch"? These frequently cited terms in the game of baseball have never been objectively studied, but I am trying to change that. I have created a survey asking about some Major League players’ characteristics and it would be great if some of you, being huge baseball fans, could fill it out! It should only take a maximum of 15 minutes. Also, I would love to hear any comments that you have about my survey! Thanks so much for all your help!
Here is the website for my survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VUWValhJzb65tk1lZoMMEQ_3d_3d

Selig solves the problem

The Series is heading back to Tampa Bay now. In a move that has precedence in giving home field in the World Series to the winner of an exhibition game, Bud Selig has declared the Rays winner of game 5.

Bud explains, “Since Hell is apparently freezing over up here, we needed an option. Well, we thought about all our choice, and realized we should look at past history. Since the teams didn’t play in the regular season, we looked at spring training. The Rays won 2 out of 3 in March, and since we charge admission for those games, we expect the players to play to win. Let’s head south where it’s not snowing and play some baseball tomorrow night as planned. We consulted with FOX, and as long as they don’t let the Backstreet Boys sing, that’s what FOX wanted…and what is in the best interest of baseball.”

Obama ad

political reports mention McCain in Quakertown today mentioning that there might be a 30-min delay on Wed night as the Obama campaign bought a 30-min. ad to run at that time. Anybody with more fair and balanced info out there? Or is this a pointless haymaker as if the ad time was purchased for Wed night it would have been up against regularly scheduled game 6.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 28, 2008 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

pointless

Not sure what game it was, but since I haven’t seen the ad yet…this is probably correct. He bought the ad time a long time ago…for 8-8:30. During which time, I haven’t seen any baseball yet these playoffs. If there’s a delay, it’s just ’cause FOX likes delays.

by TallMatt on Oct 28, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

5 minute delay

Fox moved the start of Game 6 (now probably Game 5A) back 5 minutes to accommodate Obama’s ad.

travel day statement

“We’ll look at it on a day-to-day basis,” said Bob DuPuy, MLB’s president and chief operating officer. "No decision has been made as to the off-day yet, assuming Tampa Bay won, whether we would kill the travel day or whether we would have a travel day and then pick up the series in Tampa Bay.

it’s a good thing we all have private jets available

by TallMatt on Oct 28, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

anyone who can afford tickets to game 5, a flight to tampa and tickets to game 6 an probably afford to juggle their travel plans a little bit – i doubt really that the loss of a travel day puts that many people out.

Idiots

They better let the teams know before the game happens tomorrow (or Thursday) night. It certainly could affect how the teams use their players and bullpens.

Good enough night for baseball where I am at.

This has “couldn’t interrupt a night of FOX primetime programming” written all over it.

Power of the dollar.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 28, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

House and a rerun of fringe?

Somehow I doubt it – while baseballs ratings arn’t huge – fox prime time doesn’t get huge ratings in and of itself – world series ads sell for more

by jemagee on Oct 28, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not a matter of comparing it to other world series games that would eventually be played either way. It’s a matter of comparing it to what fox would have done tomorrow night instead of the world series. Frankly, I doubt it. What I do believe is Fox exerted undue influence on these games and kept Wednesday’s game from being started earlier. I think something should be done. Maybe we should avoid consuming any products advertised for during the remainer of the ballgame. At least intentionally using substitutes for the products advertised and making that known. Something along those lines.

by Matt Swartz on Oct 28, 2008 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that Selig et al. knew that if they either:
1)waited until game time (or just before) to cancel it
2) started the game and then there was a rain delay again during it
3) played in poor conditions

they would, deservedly so, be ripped to shreds by the media and everyone and everyone. I’m not exactly a FOX sympathizer, but I really doubt that dr. house was behind this.

by char6587 on Oct 28, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Aside from making us feel good about ourselves, what will that accomplish?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

either (1) lower the demand for advertising now or in the future for fox sports, or (2) discourage fox from meddling in the future for fear of losing advertising revenue from fan backlash.

by Matt Swartz on Oct 28, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Boycotts have been shown to be largely ineffective quite some time ago.

by boteman on Oct 29, 2008 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes…unless backed by broader social movements (see Montgomery Bus Boycott, UFW Grape Boycott)

by FuquaManuel on Oct 29, 2008 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions

things like that don’t just magically work or not work by some divine decision. there are reasons. you need to get at those reasons. the internet largely has changed how information is trasmitted and how things can be organized. i doubt it would work for something like this, but i’m simply saying it’s possible to use the internet to organize things if local media pick up what’s happening. we don’t need taco bell to go out of business. we would just need to negate some of the added profit they will get by adveritising on fox during the world series. it would discourage advertising on fox and lower fox’s revenue enough to discourage them from meddling a little bit.

Looking like a nice night here in Center City. Can’t imagine it’s that much different 3 miles south of here. I guess Bud wanted to watch House.

that's unreal

Bud Selig, the universe is sending you a message.

To see it, stand in front of a mirror and do the following:

1) extend your arm toward the mirror
2) close your fist
3) keep all fingers down except for the middle one

That’s you. Asshole.

by dajafi on Oct 28, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

It's nice in CC?

It’s horrible here in Lansdale, maybe 20 miles from the stadium (guessing). The rain has stopped but it’s cold and VERY windy.

by phatj on Oct 28, 2008 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

It was definitely cold in Center City last night, and a bit windy. But, it wasn’t that bad out, and I think it would be have been fine conditions for baseball. No precipitation and no freezing temps. That being said, I’m fine with waiting, especially since it was uncertain mid-day yesterday.
