Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

John Smoltz

Given the awesome developments over the past two days, and the unfamiliar position I find myself in as a lifelong Phillies fan, it's weird to devote a post to John Smoltz at this point.  I have always been a Smoltz fan, as hard as that may be to admit as a Phillies fan; he's always been all class in my book.  Anyway, has anyone else who's watched the coverage on TBS been very impressed with Smoltz's performance as a color guy? Is this his first crack at this, or have I missed this in the past? I think he has a definite future in the booth should he choose to explore it.

Sincerely,

Steve Jeltz

what he said

Smoltz was particularly good in Game One, though toward the end of the broadcast he started kvetching about CBP, as he tends to do.

Overall I’ve been pretty impressed with TBS’s coverage—a big step forward from last year. Though I can’t say with total certainty that the results thus far on the field aren’t coloring my perception of this.

The only thing I liked about Smoltz was that he routinely gave Bonds the finger in the dugout. No balls, no brass ring

This is his first crack at it...

… he did color on a Braves game after Skip Caray died and was an analyst on the Braves pre-game show a few times during the season, so he’s very new to broadcasting. He’s said it isn’t something he wants to do on a full-time basis once he retires because he doesn’t want to start something that detracts away from his time with his children once he retires.

- Oh, Bobby. -

children

Yeah, gotta make sure those kids have a strong male influence around at all times, or else one of ‘em is liable to wind up wanting get gay married or something, Smoltzy’s worst nightmare.

He’s hired Jon Rocker to help him out with that ‘being a man’ thing
