Sweep the Leg, Jamie!: NLDS Game Three, Phillies at Brewers

Philadelphia Phillies @ Milwaukee Brewers

Next Game

Philadelphia Phillies
@ Milwaukee Brewers

Saturday, Oct 4, 2008, 6:37 PM EDT
Miller Park

Jamie Moyer vs Dave Bush

Sunny. Winds blowing from left to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 60.

Complete Coverage >

Two nights after the Phillies improbable defeat of 2007 Cy Young Award winner and Hottest Pitcher on the Planet CC Sabathia, the Phillies head to Milwaukee to attempt to complete a three game sweep of the Brewers and set a date with either the Dodgers (likely) or the Cubs (wha' happen'?) in the NLCS.

Jamie Moyer, moundsman during the Phillies division clinchers in 2007 and 2008, goes for the Phillies against righty Dave Bush.  In his previous start in Philadelphia, Bush was touched for three runs over six innings.  Hopefully the Phillies can do better than that tonight.

Fun fact: Despite winning both games, the Phillies have only scored runs in two innings in this series: a three run third on Wednesday, and a five run second on Thursday.

Listen to the game

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to listen to the game online?

by frisco3 on Oct 4, 2008 7:00 PM EDT   0 recs

Core Hart ‘showing a lot of patience’ – because he doesn’t swing at the first pitch?

Come on Moyer – get it together

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 7:03 PM EDT   0 recs

You don't understand.

That is a lot of patience for Corey Hart. :)

I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

WERTH

great play getting corey hart off of first base. inning changing and hopefully, game changing

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 7:46 PM EDT   0 recs

Moyer can’t get that low out of the zone pitch – but busch can?

Excellent

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 7:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Bad luck for the Phils in that fourth inning—Howard’s rocket just foul, Burrell and Victorino hit line drives right at guys.

They can get Dave Bush. Gramps just has to keep ’em close.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:03 PM EDT   0 recs

I wasn’t even able to finish my yelling at Feliz for first-pitch swinging before the Brewers bungled that into a hit…

No DP plz

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:08 PM EDT   0 recs

Gramps

90 pitches through 4….yikes.

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Another line drive out.

Baseball gods haven’t been with us tonight.

I think Condrey. Yikes.

Ruiz almost picked off Fatty at second.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Speaking of Fatty. I wonder if his knees will hold up as long as his old mans. My god he is Fat, in fact he makes jelltyroll Blanton look downright slim. OK that’s a stretch.

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

They might trade him this winter. Gotta figure he’ll DH eventually.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Are we talking about Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder?

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess if I was to say either it’d liven things up a bit .

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

can’t the ground not cause a fumble?

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Condrey threw 26 pitches, but what the HELL happened to patient phillies…busch is averaging 12 pitches per inning…god damn

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Utley comes up small there.

It’s surprising how a guy who’s such a good hitter overall is so consistently disappointing with guys on third, less than two outs.

Stetter coming in for Howard.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:39 PM EDT   0 recs

A

Whatever happened to tie goes to the runner?

At least the run got home – but holy gards

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:43 PM EDT   0 recs

i heard thats not a real rule

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 8:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay, there’s one. Howard RBI groundout—more than I expected once he got to two strikes, frankly.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Fuqua – you shouldn’t hack peoples accounts – it’s not nice

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

2 runs seems so much more surmountable than 3…

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 8:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Utley/Howard/Burrell must perform better, tonight, and over all, at the plate

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

what happened to the september, lefty-killing version of ryno? i want him back

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

howard with the rbi

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 8:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Seriously, even though they got the run home, that was just pathetic

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Burrell

The usual waving swing ground out. Methinks he’s about punched his ticket outta town. Too bad I like the guy too.

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Probably you’re right.

I wonder what kind of market there will be for him, though. The thing about free agents-to-be who make the playoffs is that 30 GMs get to watch them… Carlos Beltran probably owes half that phat contract he got from the Mets to what he did with the Astros in ’04.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Boy was Carlos in a zone thatnI haven’t seen since. He was fun to watch but that was then. Kinda like the Angels with Matthews contract.

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Why do people insist to over react to small sample size playoff performances?

Utley and Howard have been garbage at the plate as well, for most of the series, i guess they should be shipped out of town as well

CC cost himself some money on Thursday too didn’t he?

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well let’s hope the trend from the first two games doesn’t hold any more – or I’ll just watch Primeval

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:49 PM EDT   0 recs

I don’t have my usual bad feeling about Durbin here, for some reason.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Cause you’ve realized whatever he does tonight won’t matter?:)

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I should really just STFU, evidently.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

umm, yea

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 8:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

The phillies should pick a number and a number of years for burrell and take it or leave it, but they shouldn’t change their minds because of a small sample size of a playoff series JFC alreadyh.

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:52 PM EDT   0 recs

What kind of number/years do you have in mind?

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no more than 2 years, the money is irrelevant to me, it’s the years, i know the phillies have a budget and all that silliness…but if you look at Pat Burells recent CAREER and not just 3 fracking games, he’s a pretty valuable and hard to replace bat, and there’s no one in the minors or on the roster who replaces that bat…and the phils aren’t paying for manny.

Plus, I think exploring moving Howard for a front line pitcher and putting Burrell at first is NOT a bad idea.

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Money shouldn’t be an issue. They drew 3.4 million fans and will have some postseason revenue.

I think you’re actually right—I’d offer 2/28 and maybe go up to 2/30. But I bet someone will offer three, maybe even four years. At that point, you take the picks and see what else might be out there.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t disagree, but maybe offer team options with a ‘polite’ buy out number for 3rd year…remember, Pat has ‘refused’ to leave Philadelphia in the past, maybe he still wants to stay.

I keep hearing talk about how Manny is a ‘free agent’ this off season but weren’t there a couple team options in his contract? Were those options voided when he was traded?

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

For those of the inclination, pretty good SEC game on ESPN right now…Vandy trying to prove themslves

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:54 PM EDT   0 recs

i cant give up on this one just yet

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I gave up around the 3rd inning sadly

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Who is the Brewers game 4 starter scheduled to be? I really don’t like Joe Blanton

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Playoff-Tested Veteran Jeff Suppan

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 8:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, I feel slightly better about Blanton now…

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

uuuuuuuugh…need a double play here

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 8:56 PM EDT   0 recs

BIG TIME.

by Steve-O- on Oct 4, 2008 8:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

big K there

by pjnc2003 on Oct 4, 2008 9:00 PM EDT   0 recs

Double switch coming—Jenkins to RF, one of the lefties (I imagine Eyre) coming in. Presumably Werth goes to left, Burrell’s out of the game.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:01 PM EDT   0 recs

Unless Burrell aggravated his back, I’d still rather have him in the game batting than having Jenkins batting later…and if the phils are going to win, that spot will come up again…

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Besides, seriously, do the Phillies want Scott Eyre to get more than one batter out tonight?

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I doubt it. So with that in mind, you’re right—no need for the double switch.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I never see a need for pulling Pat Burrell in a close game where he’s going to come to the plate again…this one is just the most heinous violation of the stupid ‘late inning substitution’ at one of the most important moments of the game.

I really hope the game doesn’t come down to the success of the 5th spot in the phils batting order.

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

depending on what happens in the top of tihs inning, I think they could definitely leave eyre in for the 7th

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 9:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Why, the next two scheduled brewers hitters are right handed.

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Bud Selig sighting…

Now come on—you have to beat them to send that miserable f*cking prick home unhappy.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:09 PM EDT   0 recs

He always looks unhappy to me anyway.

Charlie Villanueva taking a break from training camp to pitch?

cubs

I could easily see a cubs rout tonight, by they way. studly harden vs. wildly inconsistent kuroda + angry aramis ramirez

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 9:11 PM EDT   0 recs

The only team I expect to get swept is the Angels, who should be ashamed of themslves

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’ve only seen Kuroda against the Phillies. He filleted us in that first game, and was decent in the second one.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

look at his numbers this year though. I’m not sure i’ve seen another pitcher where, depending on the game I saw, I thought he was a top-10 NL pitcher, or looking for a shot in AAA

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 9:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No, I believe you. I remember looking at his numbers after he dominated the Phillies and thinking, “how the hell did the guy with these numbers do that?”

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You forget the ‘first time facing the phillies’ dominance that all pitchers seem to have in the regular season.

I’d like to thank the bottom 3 ‘batters’ for sucking in the top of the 7th

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Eyre

He is still in. So that I guess justifies the double shift… it’s just probably not good strategy. I guess Manuel wants to stay away from Madson until the 8th.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:20 PM EDT   0 recs

For a man obsessed with the lefty righty thing this seems odd, when did the red sox and angels bring their closers in last night again?

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, that was interesting. The way it worked out kind of confirmed my previous thought that Papelbon > SaveRecordBoy.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Charlie might have learned something watching that game if he was paying attention about the idiocy of overly defined roles and ‘sticking to them’

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m hoping Save Record Boy imitates the career of Billy Wagner – it would be fun

by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably a good bet.

by dajafi on Oct 4, 2008 9:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i hope you aren’t suggesting that the phillies sign him

by char6587 on Oct 4, 2008 9:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No, I’m suggesting that the mets grossly over pay for him and then hopefully he stinks :)

Damn you ed wade
