Sweep the Leg, Jamie!: NLDS Game Three, Phillies at Brewers
Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers, Oct 4, 2008 6:37 PM EDT
Two nights after the Phillies improbable defeat of 2007 Cy Young Award winner and Hottest Pitcher on the Planet CC Sabathia, the Phillies head to Milwaukee to attempt to complete a three game sweep of the Brewers and set a date with either the Dodgers (likely) or the Cubs (wha' happen'?) in the NLCS.
Jamie Moyer, moundsman during the Phillies division clinchers in 2007 and 2008, goes for the Phillies against righty Dave Bush. In his previous start in Philadelphia, Bush was touched for three runs over six innings. Hopefully the Phillies can do better than that tonight.
Fun fact: Despite winning both games, the Phillies have only scored runs in two innings in this series: a three run third on Wednesday, and a five run second on Thursday.

Listen to the game
Can anyone tell me where I might be able to listen to the game online?
Core Hart ‘showing a lot of patience’ – because he doesn’t swing at the first pitch?
Come on Moyer – get it together

You don't understand.
That is a lot of patience for Corey Hart. :)
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Moyer can’t get that low out of the zone pitch – but busch can?

Speaking of Fatty. I wonder if his knees will hold up as long as his old mans. My god he is Fat, in fact he makes jelltyroll Blanton look downright slim. OK that’s a stretch.
Are we talking about Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder?

Condrey threw 26 pitches, but what the HELL happened to patient phillies…busch is averaging 12 pitches per inning…god damn

Utley/Howard/Burrell must perform better, tonight, and over all, at the plate
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously, even though they got the run home, that was just pathetic

Burrell
The usual waving swing ground out. Methinks he’s about punched his ticket outta town. Too bad I like the guy too.
Probably you’re right.
I wonder what kind of market there will be for him, though. The thing about free agents-to-be who make the playoffs is that 30 GMs get to watch them… Carlos Beltran probably owes half that phat contract he got from the Mets to what he did with the Astros in ’04.
Why do people insist to over react to small sample size playoff performances?
Utley and Howard have been garbage at the plate as well, for most of the series, i guess they should be shipped out of town as well
CC cost himself some money on Thursday too didn’t he?

Well let’s hope the trend from the first two games doesn’t hold any more – or I’ll just watch Primeval

Cause you’ve realized whatever he does tonight won’t matter?:)

The phillies should pick a number and a number of years for burrell and take it or leave it, but they shouldn’t change their minds because of a small sample size of a playoff series JFC alreadyh.
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions
no more than 2 years, the money is irrelevant to me, it’s the years, i know the phillies have a budget and all that silliness…but if you look at Pat Burells recent CAREER and not just 3 fracking games, he’s a pretty valuable and hard to replace bat, and there’s no one in the minors or on the roster who replaces that bat…and the phils aren’t paying for manny.
Plus, I think exploring moving Howard for a front line pitcher and putting Burrell at first is NOT a bad idea.
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Money shouldn’t be an issue. They drew 3.4 million fans and will have some postseason revenue.
I think you’re actually right—I’d offer 2/28 and maybe go up to 2/30. But I bet someone will offer three, maybe even four years. At that point, you take the picks and see what else might be out there.
I don’t disagree, but maybe offer team options with a ‘polite’ buy out number for 3rd year…remember, Pat has ‘refused’ to leave Philadelphia in the past, maybe he still wants to stay.
I keep hearing talk about how Manny is a ‘free agent’ this off season but weren’t there a couple team options in his contract? Were those options voided when he was traded?

Well, I feel slightly better about Blanton now…

Double switch coming—Jenkins to RF, one of the lefties (I imagine Eyre) coming in. Presumably Werth goes to left, Burrell’s out of the game.
Unless Burrell aggravated his back, I’d still rather have him in the game batting than having Jenkins batting later…and if the phils are going to win, that spot will come up again…
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Besides, seriously, do the Phillies want Scott Eyre to get more than one batter out tonight?
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I never see a need for pulling Pat Burrell in a close game where he’s going to come to the plate again…this one is just the most heinous violation of the stupid ‘late inning substitution’ at one of the most important moments of the game.
I really hope the game doesn’t come down to the success of the 5th spot in the phils batting order.

depending on what happens in the top of tihs inning, I think they could definitely leave eyre in for the 7th
Why, the next two scheduled brewers hitters are right handed.

cubs
I could easily see a cubs rout tonight, by they way. studly harden vs. wildly inconsistent kuroda + angry aramis ramirez
The only team I expect to get swept is the Angels, who should be ashamed of themslves
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ve only seen Kuroda against the Phillies. He filleted us in that first game, and was decent in the second one.
look at his numbers this year though. I’m not sure i’ve seen another pitcher where, depending on the game I saw, I thought he was a top-10 NL pitcher, or looking for a shot in AAA
No, I believe you. I remember looking at his numbers after he dominated the Phillies and thinking, “how the hell did the guy with these numbers do that?”
You forget the ‘first time facing the phillies’ dominance that all pitchers seem to have in the regular season.
I’d like to thank the bottom 3 ‘batters’ for sucking in the top of the 7th

Eyre
He is still in. So that I guess justifies the double shift… it’s just probably not good strategy. I guess Manuel wants to stay away from Madson until the 8th.
For a man obsessed with the lefty righty thing this seems odd, when did the red sox and angels bring their closers in last night again?
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, that was interesting. The way it worked out kind of confirmed my previous thought that Papelbon > SaveRecordBoy.
Charlie might have learned something watching that game if he was paying attention about the idiocy of overly defined roles and ‘sticking to them’

I’ve really got some questions about how this game has been managed
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply actions
and the double switch which i felt was unnecessary and unwarranted…unless charlie is managing in the ‘small sample size’ school of managing

Pull Werth…i’d rather keep Burrell in the game than Werth.
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions
See, small sample size managing…it’s a brilliant way to go.
Howard has sucked something fierce this series, why not pull him for Coste?
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
then why bother bringing madson in at all – bring in someone unimportant and save him for tomorrow when you want to reload.
It’s games like this where Charlie Manuel loses the good will he got in game 2 and goes back to being the guy i wanted fired 2 years ago

It’s amazing how much more annoying FrankTV Guy is when the Phils are losing one of these games. The difference maybe could be captured by “I’d like to see him die” on the one hand, and “I’d actually like to kill him myself” on the other.
Actually it’s the proof of the standard sports corrolary about how much better the world looks when your team is winning.

If any team ‘owns’ another in the playoffs, it’s the red sox over the Angels. Plus if Francona is to be believed, Beckett is healthy, I doubt you have much to worry about.

That was a pitch the ump called a strike earlier tonight, against Burrell, at least twice.
Werth with a double.
The ump has been inconsistent low tonight
I’m still upset with chase for his first at bat of the night
by jemagee on Oct 4, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously Chase, if a right handed French Canadian gets you out you should be ashamed
(more ashamed than you should be of your ‘skin care’ commercials)

Meanwhile, this is a 4-2 game that’s more than three hours old, and we’re only midway through the 8th. That’s kinda vile.
Lots and lots of wasted opportunities tonight (continuation from last game) with less timely hitting.
I didn’t really expect them to sweep, but it’d have been nice

Pedro Feliz is a worthless sack of shit. I hate him so much. There was never a doubt in my mind that he would do that.
This loss was kinda disconcerting because again we had a shitton of opportunities to score and we managed one measly run. There were so many shitty ABs that I lost count also.
I think I am gonna primarily watch the football game tomorrow (flipping back to the ballgame at every commercial) to let my mind reboot after Pedro Feliz’s AB. That is the kind of thing you need a day to recover from.
