Joe Blanton vs Jeff Suppan

Complete Coverage >

Sloppy, frustrating, uninspired.  Last night's defeat to the Brewers was a pretty solid indication of how this Phillies team has been playing all series, but for a couple of high scoring innings in Games One and Two that really covered up just how dysfunctional this offense has really been.

Faced with the prospect of running lefty titan Cole Hamels out on short rest, or on five days rest at home to face truly titanic lefty CC Sabathia in a Game Five series finale, the Phillies chose to save their best for last and instead are running Joe Blanton out today against Jeff Suppan, who despite his struggles recently, pitched like an All-Star for St. Louis in the 2006 postseason.  Hopefully the Phils lefthanded bats will wake up against Suppan; if they can't hit against him, they really might not deserve a trip to the NLCS.

Well said. If Utley, Howard, and Burrell fail to show up again, I am gonna be one worried FuquaManuel.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 12:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Dude, you’re already one worried FuquaManuel

Jeff Suppan pitched like an all star in 2006 – hell that’s Joe Morgan territory

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I am not worried yet. Talk to me in about an hour and I should know more clearly if I am a worried FuquaManuel.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

or if the phils don’t score five in the top of the first?:)

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

haha. No, I would forgive them for that.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

J-ROLL

lead off home run. here. we. go.

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Nice start Jimmy

I was just about to post that my ‘goal’ for the phillies today is to score in more than one inning :)

Good outcome after Jimmy couldn’t hold back his swing

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:09 PM EDT   0 recs

For all we know, they could be done scoring now! That would keep the streak alive.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i really like this move of putting vic at the 2 spot. just pound suppan with 4 bats from the left side. lets see if victorino, chase, and ryno can build off of jimmy

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:10 PM EDT   0 recs

I agree.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

did chase just think that ball hit him?

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes…he knows how badly he’s playing and will take anything he could get

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, he always kinda does that.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Screw you Pedro Feliz. Oh, that was Howard, my bad.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Jesus – really? First pitch Ryan…Petey isn’t in the line up today

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:16 PM EDT   0 recs

I hate that goddamn shift…

and heeere’s FrankTV.

Please, Phillies, win this game so I don’t have to see this jackass again.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Actually, if we win you will be seeing more of him. A lot more of him.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

TBS has the ALCS I believe…not the NLCS

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well the eagles are winning and westbrook is playing

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:17 PM EDT   0 recs

westbrook out of the game with some sort of upper body injury. great.

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay, back to football. (I feel like Robin Williams in the restaurant scene in Mrs. Doubtfire)

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:17 PM EDT   0 recs

you’re high on cocaine?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Of course. Every Sunday morning.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

sorry – but where was the 1-1 pitch that was called a ball?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:19 PM EDT   0 recs

So, what they’re saying is that Joe Blanton is not crafty?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:20 PM EDT   0 recs

I just “turned on” the Eagles game. Did Jackson just take it to the hizzy?!?

(Looks like.)

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Yes, but he was aided by a blown call on a block in the back. Still, I’ll take it.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He made the conversion to left field cause he was horrible at 3rd base

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Fatty making me nervous with that AB to Braun. Gotta finish those.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Made me nervous when I realized he was going to have to pitch after last nights game

gets out of it – but lots of pitches thrown?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m a diehard Phillies fan, but after seeing what the Brewers are bringing to the plate today, It’s clear that it’s going to be a Brewers win and eventually they are going to win game 5 also. Such a shame too, because we had a good team this year, but the Brewers look just too good.

Fuqua – did you write this?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Not FM’s style. He’s more perpetually nervous than explicitly pessimistic.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope, not me. ; )

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Fatso can’t get Braun in a 2-2 count.

Now we get the heaviest pitcher vs. batter matchup in history.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:26 PM EDT   0 recs

David Wells never pitched to Fielder?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably. But I just had to say it.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Weren’t Wells and Cecil teammates on the Tigers about 15 years back?

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Brewers have fouled off a ton of tough two-strike pitches yesterday and today. That’s maybe the difference, just raw talent, between Hamels/Myers and Moyer/Blnaton.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Is it me or does this ump have a floating strike zone?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Okay, nice job.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:29 PM EDT   0 recs

According to Bank of America – these are the passionate fans – i love it :)

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:30 PM EDT   0 recs

These games never should go to commercial at the same time.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:30 PM EDT   0 recs

I would agree that the NY Football Giants should never be the “National” game unless they are playing an NFC east opponent.

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

im only getting the giants and the indy games. no eagles here in maine. yuck

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Chargers Dolphins in the pouring rain is fun.

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Blanton threw about a million pitches in that first inning.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Hey look, pat got a hit…

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:33 PM EDT   0 recs

Burrell turns a double into a single…

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:33 PM EDT   0 recs

i wish pat burrell were faster

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:33 PM EDT   0 recs

Victorino and maybe Rollins only guys who make that a double

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A

Good God, could TBS present a more slanted Pro Brewers broadcast as they have in this series?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:33 PM EDT   0 recs

Westbrook back in the game

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Our guys showing decent patience early, other than Howard.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow, Reggie Brown made a play there.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:36 PM EDT   0 recs

Crappy ending to a good at bat

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Too close to take, I guess.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Did it look close to you?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, their PitchTrax thing showed it was borderline.

Dobbs with the nice knock.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

did victorino moving up in the lineup get dobbs the start, or did dobbs getting the start move vic up?

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I believe it has to do with the handedness of the pitcher…Victorino batted sixth, werth 2nd, so that’s the swap.

Dobbs gets the start to get another left handed bat in the lower part of the line up while having four ‘lefties’ at the top.

And maybe charlie realizes pedro sucks

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Smoltz really getting dumber as this series goes on… talking about “getting close to the pitcher,” with Dobbs up and one out. Ideally you want to get the next two guys, no?

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:39 PM EDT   0 recs

He was babbling about moving parts when werth had the 3-2 count, i ignored it

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pat fast enough to make it third.

Come on chooch, earn some trade value

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:40 PM EDT   0 recs

When did David Akers start sucking?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Middle of 06-07 season.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks…

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Chooch better not eff this up.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Nice—Dobbs takes second on the bounce.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Oh that WP makes me feel a lot better…second one this inning – but pat couldn’t advance on the first one

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Would be nice if they told or showed the Brewers infield… okay, looks like they’re conceding the run.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:43 PM EDT   0 recs

God Ruiz sucks

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Gotta cash these eventually, boys.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Carlos Ruiz needs to swing at that.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:43 PM EDT   0 recs

This team is really starting to piss me off now.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:44 PM EDT   0 recs

….coste….

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Marson

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m starting to think the backup catcher is the backup QB of baseball. Coste isn’t that good either.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just goes to show how truly bad Ruiz is?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’d really like to see a coste appearance at some point in this series. gotta figure ruiz is tied after the night start and now a day start, too

by char6587 on Oct 5, 2008 1:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I’m surprised charlie didn’t follow the ‘night/day’ game paradigm – maybe the ‘early’ start last night confused him

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I am not worried yet. Talk to me in about an hour and I should know more clearly if I am a worried FuquaManuel.

42 minutes :)

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I didn’t say worried. Pissed off. Different. We are winning. When we are losing, I will be worried.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Love that fatalism on an early sunday morning (only 10:47 here)

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Then again, if Feliz was playing it’s doubtful Blanton even would have gotten up that inning

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:45 PM EDT   0 recs

Fatso with a good inning.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Ahh…

Seven pitch inning.

by dajafi on Oct 5, 2008 1:49 PM EDT   0 recs

nice, quick, economical 2nd inning Joe…

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:50 PM EDT   0 recs

The Brewers remind me of the Phillies.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 5, 2008 1:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Ok…top of the order again..the key word is patience, are you listening ryan howard?

by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:50 PM EDT   0 recs
