Cupcakes to the Rescue?: NLDS Game Four, Phillies at Brewers
Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers, Oct 5, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
Sloppy, frustrating, uninspired. Last night's defeat to the Brewers was a pretty solid indication of how this Phillies team has been playing all series, but for a couple of high scoring innings in Games One and Two that really covered up just how dysfunctional this offense has really been.
Faced with the prospect of running lefty titan Cole Hamels out on short rest, or on five days rest at home to face truly titanic lefty CC Sabathia in a Game Five series finale, the Phillies chose to save their best for last and instead are running Joe Blanton out today against Jeff Suppan, who despite his struggles recently, pitched like an All-Star for St. Louis in the 2006 postseason. Hopefully the Phils lefthanded bats will wake up against Suppan; if they can't hit against him, they really might not deserve a trip to the NLCS.

Well said. If Utley, Howard, and Burrell fail to show up again, I am gonna be one worried FuquaManuel.
Dude, you’re already one worried FuquaManuel
Jeff Suppan pitched like an all star in 2006 – hell that’s Joe Morgan territory

or if the phils don’t score five in the top of the first?:)

Nice start Jimmy
I was just about to post that my ‘goal’ for the phillies today is to score in more than one inning :)
Good outcome after Jimmy couldn’t hold back his swing

i really like this move of putting vic at the 2 spot. just pound suppan with 4 bats from the left side. lets see if victorino, chase, and ryno can build off of jimmy

I’m a diehard Phillies fan, but after seeing what the Brewers are bringing to the plate today, It’s clear that it’s going to be a Brewers win and eventually they are going to win game 5 also. Such a shame too, because we had a good team this year, but the Brewers look just too good.
Fuqua – did you write this?

Fatso can’t get Braun in a 2-2 count.
Now we get the heaviest pitcher vs. batter matchup in history.
Is it me or does this ump have a floating strike zone?

did victorino moving up in the lineup get dobbs the start, or did dobbs getting the start move vic up?
I believe it has to do with the handedness of the pitcher…Victorino batted sixth, werth 2nd, so that’s the swap.
Dobbs gets the start to get another left handed bat in the lower part of the line up while having four ‘lefties’ at the top.
And maybe charlie realizes pedro sucks
by jemagee on Oct 5, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Smoltz really getting dumber as this series goes on… talking about “getting close to the pitcher,” with Dobbs up and one out. Ideally you want to get the next two guys, no?
He was babbling about moving parts when werth had the 3-2 count, i ignored it

I’m starting to think the backup catcher is the backup QB of baseball. Coste isn’t that good either.
I’d really like to see a coste appearance at some point in this series. gotta figure ruiz is tied after the night start and now a day start, too
I’m surprised charlie didn’t follow the ‘night/day’ game paradigm – maybe the ‘early’ start last night confused him

Umps have been bad all series with the low pitch…it’s like they can’t decide whether it should be a strike or a ball.
That’s what drives me crazy, I don’t mind umps having different strike zones so much as long as each ump is consistent with his strike zone
That was NOT strike 2

Jimmy Rollins’ homer leading off the game was the second leadoff home run by a Phillie in postseason history. The other was hit by … Jimmy Rollins — in Game 2 of last year’s NLDS. But unlike this one, last year’s homer didn’t give the Phillies the lead. They’d already given up two runs in the top of the first — and went on to lose 10-5.

29 in the first, 18 since. Tough to fault him given that a lot of it was Braun and Fielder, and the bad guys didn’t score.

No, their offense just has disappeared in this quarter, and the Redskins went almost the length of the field on that last drive. And they’ve got it again with 50 seconds left, though inside their own 20.

Have we reached the mountain this season?
I know I am getting ahead of myself but I am interested to hear what others feel. Last year was a success to me…..even though we got swept and barely had a cup of coffee in the playoffs. But it was the first time since I was in 5th grade that it happened. Now, losing would have been a disappointment. But now we are in the NLCS…..with home field advantage. I wonder what are the expectations are now. I really want to win but our awesome starting pitching has been hiding some horrendous playing from out stars (Utley and Howard I am talking about you) but with our pitchers (starters and bullpen) I think we can do this.
i want to make it to the World Series. If the bats wake up during the CS, I think we can take the WS
I want to win the whole friggin’ thing. It’s been 28 years for them, 25 for the city.
There are reasons to think this is the best shot they’ll have with this group—Moyer and/or Burrell might not be back, Hamels could break down, and they’ve been pretty fortunate with team health this year—so let’s win it all RIGHT NOW.
