Holliday going to Oakland...

Pending a physical, it looks like Matt Holliday will be going to Oaklan.  Now that the dream of a Utley-Howard-Holliday middle of the order is dead, I think the club needs to redouble their efforts to sign Burrell.  An outfield of Werth, Victorino, and a Dobbs/Jenkins platoon simply won't cut it.  On a related note, Burrell has to be salivating when he sees Mike Cameron's 10 million and Brian Giles' 9 million options picked up.

Is Dobbs/Jenkins/Stairs (the idea Amaro is kicking around) even really a platoon? It seems to me that this would essentially be the equivalent of one left handed left fielder with poor to mediocre numbers against left handed pitching. If we don’t keep Burrell or get another good right handed outfielder I think we are in some trouble.

That is in all likelihood a negotiating posture, not a genuine proposal. If you are going to be in negotiations with Burrell or whomever, then you need to make it seem to them that you’re willing to live without them. Even if it’s objectively crazy to go with a Dobbs/Jenkins/Stairs three-headed monster, if there is any doubt in the mind of Burrell/whoever as to whether you might actually be that crazy, then they’ll be that much more willing to bargain with you.

It would not be helpful to the Phillies’ negotiating position if Amaro were to go out and announce to the press “We cannot live with our current leftfield situation and we will have to spend whatever it takes to bring in a good RH hitter.”

Of course, it’s still possible that we end up with some crappy platoon in left next year. But if that happens, it’ll be because Amaro tried and failed to get someone else, not because he actually thought it would be okay.

I think our expressed interest in Matt Holliday and the fact that the Oakland A’s and BIlly Beane now control him is possibly the scariest thing in the world to me right now — next to global warming, nuclear winter, and this lady.

Whoever gets Holliday off Billy around the All Star Break is going to fork over half of their farm system to do so… Hopefully we don’t see him in red pinstripes this year…

World F*ckin' Champions, indeed...

Not too upset at (apparently?) losing the Holliday Sweepstakes. We would have been robbed blind in the process of acquiring him, I’m afraid.

It looks like Oakland was. They gave up some pretty decent young pitchers.
