Utley In 2009
I'm curious as to what the Phillies Phaithful at the Good Phight see in store for Utley in 2009. After his incredible start, Utley's last four months were decidedly pedestrian. He picked things up a bit in the post season, and had some absolutely huge hits, but he wasn't on fire then either. So what can we expect next year?
If the slump was a product of a nagging injury, presumably he'll be better by next spring and his performance will rebound as well. Has anybody heard any credible information about his health? I know he's not one to talk about factors like that.
On the other hand, I saw signs that the league had found a weakness in his hitting approach and he did not seem to do much to adjust to it. Obviously, this is just observational, and of course subject to faulty memory, but it seemed that pitchers were very effective at throwing pitches that started at him and tailed over the inside corner. Utley would react by flinching his right shoulder inward, and the pitch would be called a strike. When he swung at those balls, he didn't hit them. He also seemed to have less strike zone judgment and less patience in the later stages of the season (except for his multi walk game in the playoffs)
Any thoughts?

Of course there were whispers of some kind of hip injury, but who knows for certain?
What’s interesting is his pre- and post-ASB splits:
Pre-ASB: .291/.372/.582
Post-ASB: .292/.390/.465
Batting average virtually identical, his OBP actually improved, it was his slugging that plummetted.
And I didn’t visually note any significant drop-off in his running or defense, so I’m a little skeptical about the injury hypothesis. Could be wrong, of course.

That’s interesting.
The parameters are important here. If you draw the line at the 20-2 game vs. St. Louis, it looks like this:
Until: .317/.404/.653
After: .272/.361/.446
And you can split the After once again into:
After 20-2 Game to July 27: .234/.296/.380
From July 29 to End of Season: .298/.401/.490
Anyway, if Utley ends ‘09 with an OPS somewhere in the .900s again, like he always does, I’ll be happy regardless of how he gets there.

Thanks
I was thinking of the split after th 20-2 game. But I agree with your end conclusion.

I guess I was wrong to be skeptical. Good timing, me.

If he was not not going to spend the off season getting back to normal after surgery, I’d say we’ll see a better and improved Utley at the plate next year. Being that surgery is on the menu for the off season, I’d say we get a similar Utley to the one we had in 2008. All things considered, that suits me just fine…..

i think since he’s having surgeory and is going to have to make adjustments anyway due to it, he’s going to go back and look at all his mechanics and get everything right before the season starts. its a lot easier to change your swing before the season, rather than making a mid season adjustment.
