Next years team?
Locks for next years team and possible issues:
1b-Ryan Howard
2b-Chase Utley
SS-Jimmy Rollins
3b- Pedro Feliz Will Feliz be a fulltime player next year? Will Jason Donald move to 3rd and be brought up to the big league team? Can Donald or Feliz play left?
C- Carlos Ruiz/ Lou Marson/ Chris Coste Carlos Ruiz had a very nice postseason. He proved he can really handle a pitching staff everyday. He did not throw out baserunners well in the playoffs at all and had a miserable regular season offensively. Lou Marson will compete for the starters job and has a much better bat than Ruiz. Chris Coste will have a very tough time making this team unless it is strictly as a pinch hitter (basically the role Taguchi had this year)
OF- Burrell will be taking 4-5 years and 50-75 million from some other team (my guess is the mets) Victorino owns a guaranteed spot in this outfield. Can Jayson Werth play everyday for a full season. I believe he can. Jenkins will be our 4th outfielder this year but, who will fill the void in left? I would love to say Milton Bradley but, there is no way the Phils would take a chance on hurting the chemistry they have in this locker room with a personality like his. I would also like Adam Dunn but, it would put too many strikeouts in this lineup. He would be a slight defensive upgrade to Burrell with a slighty better power bat as well. He is also a walks machine.
Rotation:
Hamels
MYers
Blanton
Beyond these 3 there are questions. Will Moyer be re-signed (also possible mets)? Can Kendrick step back into his spot as the 4/5 man in the rotation? Will Happ or Carrasco start the season on the major league team? Can the Phils add a pitcher from free agency? MYers would look awfully good as a 3 and Blanton as a 4/5. My guess is Kendrick gets moved in the offseason for help off of the bench/bullpen if a free agent is brought in.
Bullpen:
MAdson, Lidge, and Romero are locks for the end of the bullpen. Chad Durbin pitched well above his capabilities for much of the season and reverted to the pitcher I believe him to be in mid august through the world series. I would let him to go his highest free agent bidder. Clay Condrey will be on this team next year because he has naked pictures of Charlie Manuel with HArry Kalas' wife (im assuming). Scott Eyre should remain with this team as well. I would personally like to see a young minor leaguer added to the pen (Zagurski if healthy)
Bench-
As much as I hate Eric Bruntlett, he is what most teams need. A player who can play anywhere on the field and provide an occasional big hit. I don't like him as a pinch runner (other than in the playoffs) but, he certainly has heart and guts. He will be on the team.
Greg Dobbs
I think it is a definite possiblity that Tadahito Iguchi is on this team next year. He may fill the Bruntlett role if Bruntlett is not.

Two thoughts
I don’t care if Feliz “can” play OF, he can’t on my team. I’m OK with him at 3B as he’s an excellent glove man and isn’t totally worthless against LHP.
I’d happily take Adam Dunn to play LF (strikeouts don’t concern me), but if we do that we still need a big RH bat.
You basically contradict yourself when talking about Adam Dunn. First you say he would add too many strikeouts to the lineup and then you rightly not that he walks an ass load.
Adam Dunn gets on base at a career .381 clip. His strikeouts don’t interfere with this. If I could have a lineup with 8 guys who strike out near 200 times per season yet get on base 40% of the time and slug above .500 I would take the strikeouts in a heartbeat.
I didnt contradict myself. I was saying the only negative is his strikeout rate. HE is an obp and walks machine. The phils are used to putting back to back strikeout guys next to each other with Burrell and Howard. PAt has a slightly better bat for average. IT is also worth noting that Dunn tears up CBP. The real problem with Dunn and the Phils is they would go 345 with 3 lefty bats. Unless they could put Utley at 2 in the order. But, I dont like Werth in the 3 hole. The PHils definitely need to add a right handed power bat if BUrrell leaves. My choice would be to try out Jason DOnald in left if we cant find a worthy free agent.
I do agree with you there. If Burrell isn’t re-signed and we are unable to sign a right-handed power bat (Manny? Also, I am not against signing Milton Bradley. I, for one, like the guy and he should OPS between .850 and .900 – his injury history is a concern though) we are going to have a big hole on the right side of the plate.
There is no guarantee that Donald can come up and produce at the major league level either.
Bradley had his option picked up

Doh! I was thinking about the Cameron signing when I read this… nevermind.

I wasn’t aware our batboy was filing for free agency… but in that case, he’ll be a welcome addition!

3 things
1. stairs is still gonna be on the team, yes? cots tells me that his contract expires after next year. that guy will always be welcome.
2. I’d also like to see the phillies bring eyre back. if they can do this without offering much, that would be perfect.
3. what about jon garland? clearly has some stuff left, a somewhat down contract year that won’t be payed much attention in the deep angels rotation. it would be nice to land a lefty, but to have another secure 4/5 pitcher with a VERY clear bill of health would be great.
Burrell to the mets
Seriously?

"If you condensed everything I ever did in my career into one game, it looks decent"
Amaro said yesterday that they are trying to bring back Moyer and Eyre. There was no mention of Burrell. THe mets have big time problems in their outfield and likely only one more year of Delgado at first. Do not be surprised to see them give Burrell an offer. Mike cameron just had his 10 million dollar option picked up. If he is making 10 million what can Pat command?
congrats from ny
gotta give it up to the phillies im as big a mets fan as ull ever see, most new yorkers respect the fact that the phillies won, not that we actually like the team and defintiely not the fans, but the team played with heart so props, enjoy it, as longs the giants whip up on the eagles ny always has something to root for, till we see u again in ’09……
I’d thought about Dunn replacing Burrell, but the 3-4-5 LHB is a big problem, and I think that really negates the Phils against LHP. Even though I thought Dunn was unlikely, now I concede it’s not an option.
Stairs is under contract through next year.
As for SPers….Hamels, Myers, Blanton. I suspect Moyer will be back. Then I think Happ takes the fifth spot. I suspect Kendrick will be back in AAA or trade bait. He’s got too much potential and is too young to dump into middle relief, doesn’t have the command/nasty pitch/velocity to be a closer.
Why the blasting of Clay Condrey? He filled his role perfectly on this club. Mop-up time guy. He didn’t get nuked ever. He pitched well in tight spots when needed. Never complained. I’m content to have him on the roster.
I’m a big Happy Pete fan. Since Rolen whined his way out of town we’ve been treated to:
David Bell – bad defense, bad offense
Abe Nunez – ok defense, putrid offense
Wes Helms – average defense, bad offense
Insert Feliz……above average defense, below average bat WITH timely hitting. SOLD!
