Funny look ahead from last year-Offer to Lowe

http://www.thegoodphight.com/2008/2/8/122829/8535

I still think the Phils will need to spend 18 million on  a starting pitcher and new Left Fielder :)

World Series or not...The Phils have been salivating at Lowe's g:f ratio for quite some time.  I would still love to see a Hamels/Myers/Lowe 1-3.  I think Lowe would make Kendrick substantially better, the same way Moyer made Hamels a better pitcher.  Hamels/Myers/Lowe/Blanton/Kendrick would certainly look pretty good.  This could also open up a trade of BLanton for a left fielder.  Let's keep our eyes and ears open.

I keep seeing this written places, but can someone tell me how “Moyer made Hamels a better pitcher” versus Cole Hamels was already just really f’in good and needed to stop getting stupid injuries?

Hamels will be the first to tell you that Moyer taught him how to “pitch” rather than “throw”

Can someone show me this somewhere, in print, anywhere?

I heard Hamels say it in multiple interviews during season and after the World Series win

Hamels credited Moyer with teaching him that his changeup – one of the best in baseball – would improve as the game progressed. When Hamels’ appreciation was relayed to him, Moyer glowed

Moyer has worked a lot with Hamels this year, teaching him about what it means to pitch. Hamels has slowed himself down and learned how not to show his emotions. The tutoring clearly has paid off.

Moyer has been somewhat of an added pitching coach for the Phillies with youngster Cole Hamels also having spent time learning from Moyer.

Hamels has gravitated toward 45-year-old pitcher teammate Jamie Moyer, who is old enough to be Hamels’ father, but they both acknowledge developing an unusual relationship. “I’ve learned so much from talking to him and watching him,” Hamels says. “I try not to bother him too much. He has seven kids to take care of. I’m sure he doesn’t need an extra kid.” Moyer grimaces at the new-school notions of massage and nutritional supplements Hamels ingests each day. But they connect in other ways. “Even though we have a lot of differences,” Moyer says, “we’ve had great conversations. We’ve talked more about controlling emotions. "I can’t tell him how to do it. He has to create who he is. But he’s special.” Hamels learned from Moyer that chances like tonight can be fleeting. “Jamie has helped me understand how special this opportunity is,” Hamels says.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

This canard came up a lot at the end of Hamels' rookie season

I took a close look at Hamels’ performance trends during the 2006 season and found that he struggled a bit early on, then hit his stride and was dominant for a stretch, but actually was a tick less effective from the time Moyer joined the team until the end of the year. (I wrote a long post about this on philliesphans.com back in the day, but it’s buried in the members-only archives and I can’t get to it anymore.)

Possibly the Moyer effect didn’t take full effect until subsequent seasons.

Ugh

Stupid formatting. Only the word “less” was supposed to be italic.

If… Lowe signs… I peg his contract around $12M per year… sounds about right. Had we gotten arbitration on both Pat and Moyer, it would have been in the neighborhood of $23M…. if the plan is to sign Lowe and let Moyer and Pat walk, we sure as shit better spend decent money on a RH outfielder.

Can we deal with a Hamels/Myers/Lowe/Blanton/(Kendrick or whomever) rotation? I think I could deal with that… We better not screw around with our open outfield spot though… I don’t want to see Jenkins marching out there on a regular basis….

Deal with that?? That’s a fantastic rotation. OBviously Kendrick had issues last year. But, he has still won 10+ games 2 years in a row, both without pitching a full mlb season. On Aug 6 he had a respectable 4.37 era and a 10-5 record. After that he pretty much blew up. Could it have been a mechanics or injury problem? SURE! I just don’t think he can be written off just yet. I pray the get a nice right handed bat also but, if Lowe signs (still a HUGE if) the rotation looks very competitive with any in the majors.

I have my doubts about Kendrick’s ability to rebound. Leaving aside all the other open questions with our rotation, I think I’d take Happ over Kendrick straight up.

Lowe would certainly be a nice addition, but I don’t know that that upgrade will be bigger than the downgrade that will probably result in left.

I would rather see some of the other ‘almost ready’ guys get a shot at the rotation than handing the spot back to Kendrick who seemed to perform more ‘as expected’ last year than his unexpected and out of left field rookie season.

Yankees reportedly offered Lowe 4 years, 66 million. Makes our offer look pretty weak. Lets hope he likes the NL.

Boston already there too…according to other reports.

My guess, like most atheltes and normal people, is that he likes money and will take the best contract offer and only decide on other factors if they are (close to) equal…the phils won’t match that

Makes not offering moyer arbitration even dumber now don’t it?
