Phillies have "no desire" to re-sign Burrell.
From Baseball Prospectus (subscription req'd).
Regardless of public statements to the contrary, [the Phillies] have no desire to re-sign Burrell. While they have interest in signing Ibanez as a possible replacement in left field, they are more likely to add someone to platoon with a holdover such as Greg Dobbs, Geoff Jenkins, or Matt Stairs.

Take this for what its worth, but my wife’s sister’s boyfriend is friends with the Phillies Phanatic and apparently at the Phillies post World Series celebration party, Burrell was going around saying his goodbyes and letting everyone know he didn’t expect to be back. Judging by that, the lowball initial offer, failure to offer arbitration and well known interest in Ibanez and Baldelli it’s sadly become pretty clear Pat won’t be back.
Well known interest in Baldelli? Who can’t stay healthy?
Since when?

Baldelli

I realize the connection is a little long, a friend of a friend may have worked better. Whatever though, was just trying to illustrate the point that Burrell himself doesn’t think the team wants him back / doesn’t expect to be back.
As unfortunate as this is, I can’t say I’m surprised. I’m just glad we could give Pat a proper sendoff.
As I’ve said before and will continue to say ad nauseum: while disappointed, I’ll be okay with this as long as the money saved is put toward something constructive. And in my mind, “something constructive” means either: (1) an upgrade in the rotation; or (2) a contract extension for any or all of Hamels, Werth, and Victorino.
for any or all of Hamels, Werth, and Victorino.
One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong…

Ahhh how I miss watching Sesame Street as a little kid. Best show on television.
That being said… which one doesn’t belong? Hamels because a deal likely won’t get done? Werth because you’re not sold on him as an everyday player? Victorino because he’s so far from free agency?
Werth who has a history of not staying healthy and was only hot for a short period of time so people are over valuing him – much like those who no longer think Ruiz sucks any more because of the small sample size of the playoffs.
Just saying – let’s not over reacting to werth – or even victorino or hamels – they don’t need extensions yet and if the phils don’t have money for burrell and moyer – then throwing money at vitorino and hamels when they don’t need to yet is a bad financial decision…let the process play out and use wat you have to your advantage.

Ruiz’s sample size of bad performance is smaller than Werth’s sample size of good performance (adjusting for position).
Ruiz ‘bad performance’ for me was 2 seasons long until the playoffs – werth has usually been good – but injury prone

Regarding Werth, you are correct, but that’s not what you said in your previous comment. You said Werth “was only hot for a short period of time.” That wasn’t true. He was good for a pretty substantial period of time, and there wasn’t any one short stretch within that time period that stood out unusually.
Regarding Ruiz, you are incorrect. His performance is what it is – how it was “for you” doesn’t matter. The facts show that Ruiz had average offensive stats for a catcher in 2007. That performance was roughly consistent with his equivalencies from his time at Scranton. The 2008 regular season is the outlier, not the 2008 postseason. Ruiz is no star at the plate, but to claim that he “sucks” is grossly unfair and indicative of bias.
Well, I don’t like anyone really, it’s a well known fact :)

True, none of them “need” extensions yet, but if you can lock them up long-term at a set price, then it’ll both give you continuity and future financial flexibility (i.e. when they’re signed to below market contracts several years down the line).
And while I appreciate your concern over Werth’s health — it’s a legitimate one — I don’t think I’m overreacting in saying it’d be wise to explore an extension with him. He’s the Phillies only dependable RH bat now that Burrell is gone, and I’m guessing he could signed to something like a 3-year, $18 million deal right now. That’s better than letting him hit free agency next offseason, deciding you need to keep him, and paying a lot more then to do so.
Phils-Burrell= Lowe?
If the money saved on Burrell DOES end up going to Derek Lowe, then it will lessen the sting of losing Pat D Bat. I don’t think that Raul Ibanez is the WORST sloppy seconds that the Phils could end up with, but he certianly doesn’t blow my skirt up either….
