Benson in the house!

The long-discussed deal with RHP Kris Benson came to fruition today, with the Phillies signing the oft-injured former first overall draft pick to a minor league deal.

This isn't terrible, really.  There aren't any sure things left out there.  The Phillies are going to have to throw a lot of crap against the wall pitching-wise, and see what sticks.  I'd rather they take a flyer on a guy like this then sink $30MM in someone like Kyle Lohse.

So now the question is when he'll be ready to go.  Labrum surgery is very, very ominous.  I think May is optimistic.

Re: Benson in the house!
Isn't he close to 100% recovered? Not that that means he'll be anything like he used to be, but I really hope surgery isn't a looming issue. At least it was a Minor League deal and they're not overpaying for him and guaranteeing him time in the rotation.

I really hope he does well enough to push Adam Eaton out...

Re: Benson in the house!
Benson's 60% to 70% right now, according to Chuck LaMar via Zolecki yesterday. it's pretty unlikely that he'll be ready to contribute before June, if he ever is.

Re: Benson in the house!
Not to be a broken record, but the fact that Benson's unlikely to be ready from the jump is why I still want Lohse.

Seriously, the guy probably can be had for one year, $8 million with an option/buyout at this point. Just freakin' do it.

But they won't. You know they're congratulating themselves on having gotten "Eaton insurance" with this deal, not realizing that they need to insure more than Eaton. Plus one of the Buck Boys probably lost that $8 million check in the couch cushions.

Re: Benson in the house!
Totally agree. There's really no reason why we couldn't bring in both. I have to ask again, are they hurting for money?

Surely the Benson deal can't have maxed out the budget?

Re: Benson in the house!
From today's Inky:  "After reaching a minor-league contract agreement with righthander Kris Benson, the Phillies likely won't add anyone else by the end of spring training. That means righthander Kyle Lohse, who remains unsigned, is not on their radar. He had been a long shot, anyway."

Re: Benson in the house!
I don't get this. You sign an older pitcher coming off surgery that might be ready to pitch by june and you put your feet up and say "We're done!???????????"

How does signing Benson mean we're all set?

We spent money.  Thus, we're done.  QED.

Re: Benson in the house!
Right. Whether or not the action solved the problem, they acted! Money was spent! The clubhouse guy probably has done a Benson uniform and everything. What more do you want?

Re: Benson in the house!
the one where Benson and Clayton have an insult contest is a classic. Not funny, just a classic.

Re: Benson in the house!
Dajafi and I are in total agreement on this one.  The Phillies are - potentially - one tool away from making this a 'season to remember' and the tool is out there sitting on the street waiting to be picked up.  Yet....the Phil's management is content to sit inside the house and let someone else pick the tool up.  Absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Benson in the house!
Whether you want the Phillies to sign Lohse or not, I think it is truly amazing how much his stock has fallen.  When I take a step back and look at the situation as a whole, it really is quite unique and unexpected.  "Experts" were predicting at least a four year contract for Lohse when the off season began.  Now, he could probably be picked up for one year plus a vesting option.  Amazing...

Re: Benson in the house!
Joe Sheehan attributed Lohse's situation to the education of the market.  With so many high-priced but sub-mediocre pitchers failing in years past, GMs have wised up.  I'm not sure I buy it, but it's one possible explanation.
