Lidge placed on DL

Well, this is a mild surprise. It's retroactive to March 21, which means he can be activated as early as April 5 when the Phils visit the Cincinnati Reds.

Lidge, who is scheduled to throw tomorrow in a minor-league game, had been hopeful he would be ready to open the season, but the Phillies sounded less optimistic after he threw a bullpen session yesterday. Lidge's velocity still isn't where it needs to be, so they're going to give him a little more time to build up arm strength. Lidge had surgery on his right knee Feb. 25, which set him back.

I guess one consequence of this is that it gives the team more time to resolve its roster issues--which might mean a new lease on life for Travis Blackley and/or J.D. Durbin. Also, Clay Condrey presumably can now pack his bags for Philadelphia.

Re: Lidge placed on DL
No big deal.  I know this is going to sound silly, but I have a gut feeling that the Phils will have a nice April.  I am thinking somewhere along the lines of 15 or 16 wins.  Also, I do not think Lidge missing four games against the Nationals and Reds will have any great impact on the season.  What are the chances that the Phils will be up by one in the ninth inning in any of the first four games?  Maybe 10 percent?  Oh well, I am just really anxious for the season to get started.

Yeah, I agree this isn't a bid deal and I'm actually heartened by their "better safe than sorry" approach here. Hope you're right about the strong April; certainly they're due...

I think they are going to go 10-18 this March/April and it appears as if I have history on my side.

Fair enough.  Hopefully, history does not always repeat itself...
