A question about a rumor out of St. Louis
There was a rumor in the St. Louis paper yesterday that the Phillies scouts have followed the Cardinals around to Houston, San Francisco and St. Louis scouting our own (liked by fans, disliked by our manager, and openly disdained by our pitching coach) Anthony Reyes. He has put on quite a show for them. In 3 appearances, he has a three inning relief stint win; a scoreless tenth inning for a save; and a scoreless 9th innining in a low stress game. He has been throwing gas-hit 95 at all three stops and 96 and 97 at St. Louis. He's given up no walks in 6 2/3 innings, struck out 6 and is pitching with real confidence and an eff-u attitude. Only chink was a homer on a hanging change up in his second appearance from the pen. Lo and behold, it didn't really hurt him or the team. We still won the game-much different that last year when every damn mistake he made cost him-a lot. Three apperances since then he has been almost unhittable.
I just wonder if you all have heard the rumors, and what you think about the Phillies realistically trading for him. He's a personal favorite of mine, and I believe he's on the verge of a breakout. You will get a good, hard working pitcher if he ends up with you. I would be slightly devestated if they really do trade him......you all will take care of him, won't you?
Really, I'm curious if this is rumor, or if there is any facts behind what I read in the paper.
Thanks.

Heard absolutely nothing about that in ‘08. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember a rumor about Reyes coming to the Phils last year at the deadline. Maybe not though.

haven't heard the rumor...
But I like Reyes and would be happy to see him come over in the right deal. And I know the Phils have shown interest in him before. So it wouldn’t surprise me.
The Phillies have a lot of high-upside pitchers in the minors, most of whom are off to very strong starts. In theory, it might make sense to ship one or two of those guys for Reyes. The only thing is that the Phils don’t necessary have a job for him right now: the rotation has looked shockingly good, at least compared to expectations, and I can’t imagine they would want to use Reyes as a high-leverage reliever. Unless the trade involved Kyle Kendrick, which I doubt and doesn’t make sense for either side, I’m not sure what he’d do for them.

Well, I guess that means our newpaper guy is full of crap.
Yeah, I have heard for awhile the Phillies have liked him. I don’t know if they tried a trade in the past.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

I wouldn’t say its full of crap. When St. Louis made it known that Reyes was available this past offseason there were reports that the Phillies were up at the front of the line in hopes of trading for him. Not sure why nothing ever came to fruition, maybe the asking price was too high. Maybe the Cards were only trying to gauge interest in him.
There’s a lot to like about Reyes’s arm and the potential to buy low on him since the Cardinals seem to have soured on him for some reason. It seems at best he’s a really good #3 starter and at worst he’s a solid 7th/8th inning option. Would love to see him in Phillies red.

Hey there, Philly fans........anyone, anyone...
The Reyes rumor to the Phils has popped up yet again…...You all heard anything about it in the Philly press? From my end, it comes from Joe Strauss, the Post Dispatch’s Cardinals beat writer….
Maybe they are thinking ahead for Cole Hamel’s fragility and Jamie Moyer’s age finally catching up to him
Thanks.
