Pat Burrell Is Man And Machine

Remember during spring training when we all debated whether Pat Burrell is actually man or if he is, in fact, machine? Well, Pat is showing that he’s the best of both as he’s started off the 2008 season with a bang. The left fielder went and jacked his 6th homer of the season in a 10-2 trouncing of the Houston Astros yesterday. After finishing the 2007 season with such a terrific 2nd half, he hasn’t slowed down AT ALL. The man looks confident up there, is laying off junk as usual, and is bashing anything hit over the plate. Just check out his rankings in the National League thus far:

AVG: 373 (6th)
OBP: 484 (3rd)
SLG: 836 (1st)
OPS: 1.296 (1st)

HR: 6 (tied for 1st)
RBI: 17 (1st)
BB: 13 (tied for 3rd)

VORP: 11.2 (4th)
EQA: .392 (1st)

Ho hum. Not too shabby folks.
Keep it up Pat. We may just be crowning our 3rd MVP in a row…ok, I might be jumping the gun just a bit. Still, what a hot start.  And to the haters?  Remember when some of us said Pat wasn’t so bad, and was actually pretty good? Pat sez he's better than you.

da Bat

Of note, he passed Luzinski today and is now fourth all-time on the Phillies list with 224 HR. Next up: Chuck Klein, 243. Pat really would need a career year to take #2 on the list, though: Del Ennis hit 259.

VORP

That includes defensive value (or lack thereof), right? Pretty impressive that he’s 4th.

I got the VORP number from baseball prospectus. I think they count defense?

WARP counts D-Fense.

Wow

And to think back 2 years ago when most phans woulda been elated to see him get traded for a bag of day old Krispy Kreme’s.

I have to hand it to him for keeping a positive attitude with all the past booing directed at him. I feel he really likes being and playing here and hope some kind of deal can be worked out to keep him a Phillie. I’ll probably get slammed by someone for saying this but of all the players I thnk Pat would be the most likely to give Monty and the gang a ‘home town discount’, I hope I’m not being naive.

Slamming in Progress...

You are being naive. End of story. Goodbye.

Tony Gwynn

So tell me Neduol how much did Tony Gwynn leave on the table making his entire career in a Padres uniform? Pick a number pal, it was a lot. But how much is enough? It’s an individual number. Pat Has already made more than enough for his ‘golden years’. Sometimes a sence of well being, acceptance, environment, expectations etc off-set the money.

Right, but...

I agree, and it would be stupid not to as the evidence is clearly in your favor, that “home town discounts” do happen. They have occurred in the past, in the present, and will continue to happen in the future. Could Pat give the Phillies a home town discount? Sure. But, to expect it is foolish and naive, pal.

Either Pat is a good guy or a freakin idiot for not seeing it.

I vote machine

Because he has about as much mobility as a robot.

That said, I would love to have him back next year for the right price.
