Game 20: Kendrick vs. Redman
Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies, Apr 21, 2008 8:35 PM EDT
It's usually interesting, for better and for worse, when the Phillies venture to Coors Field. Last July it was the Tarp Game; last October, sadly, it was the end of a magnificent and improbable run to the playoffs, at the hands of an even hotter and more unlikely opponent.
What will it be tonight? Kyle Kendrick hopes for the continuation of his strong work last week (seven innings of two-run ball against Houston), albeit with a better result (he lost). Ryan Howard hopes for a reversal of fortune from the last eight games, in which he's gone 4 for 26 with 10 strikeouts. Unfortunately, neither has great lifetime numbers against the Rockies: Kendrick went 0-1, 7.00 in two regular season starts against them as a rookie, and got hit hard in Game Two of the NLDS, while Howard's career numbers facing Colorado are .254/.329/.433... though that's not actually so bad considering his season line to date (.186/.318/.386). They face the well-traveled lefty Mark Redman, who has a 4-2 lifetime record against the Phils with a 3.96 ERA. As a team, the Rockies have won four of their last five, with the sole loss coming at Houston yesterday.

Eric Bruntlett can’t get out of his own way out there – another error.
Boy he is just a joy to watch. Makes me want to soak my hair in gasoline and stroll through hell.
Well, better Bruntlett throw that one away tonight than last night… nice calm work there by KK to get out unscathed after the error. He’s starting to win me back.
Harry flashed back 50 years and said New York when referring the Giants. It’s like watching your dad need help carrying something.
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
I can’t take the bottom of the order any longer. It’s nice to have players like Utley, Howard, Rollins, and Burrell at the top of the order, but when the bottom half does little more than take up space it becomes difficult to score runs.
They’re really scuffling right now, no question. Other than Werth, Utley and Burrell, nobody is hitting, and Myers and Hamels are the only starters one can feel much confidence in. Any win feels like a gift; they just need to keep it going until the reinforcements arrive.
That little yutz Tavares steals second and third on consecutive pitches.
Jenkins
strikes out swinging on a pitch that nearly hit him. Nice movement on the breaking pitch from Buchholz; terrible judgment by Jenkins.
CHOOCH!
Two-run single down the RF line with the bases loaded; Phils lead for the first time all night, 6-5.
That was some really, really weird managing by Hurdle. Why leave Buchholz in to face Utley, Howard and Burrell?
Helton saves two more from scoring on a hard-hit ball by Bruntlett.
Can the Phils hold down Colorado for six outs?
Go Flash! Never a doubt!
Since Opening Day, Flash has actually done pretty well. 2.45 ERA, 9 K in 7.1 IP.
Gordon
Absolutely overpowering—got past the error and finished it with two Ks sandwiched around a fairly deep but not super-scary flyout.
He’s making me feel pretty dumb for being so sure he was finished.
BOHN!
Full-count double scores two. Now it’s 9-5, and I can relax a little.
This makes a lot of sense: nothing from Utley and Howard, big hit from the guy who was hitting .190 at AAA.
Lidge in
He was warm, so Manuel put him in anyway. I guess it’s better than risking having to bring him in with trouble brewing.
Tavares greets him with a single. Hmm.
bullpen
Another superb outing: four scoreless, one each from Condrey, Seanez, Flash and Lidge.
Lidge had it all working tonight—you can see why he’s put up ridiculous strikout numbers.
Great win for the Phils tonight, and back to .500 we go.
werth utley howard and burrell went 9 for 19, taguchi feliz ruiz and bruntlett combined for 1 for 16.
ruiz
Sometimes, for Carlos’ own sake, I wish he would play worse so they wouldn’t invite him onto the Star of the Game Show. He just doesn’t know how to speak English. This is not criticism – I’m sure I would do even worse in a Spanish interview, even after having taken it for four years in high school and a semester in college. But I seriously can’t understand a word he’s saying.
First line of the AP recap:
“DENVER (AP)—Now that there’s no playoff pressure, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies with relative ease.”
wtf?
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.

Phillies Rally Late — Again, Overtake Rockies
The Phillies seem never to be happy unless they’re coming from behind to catch and overtake their opponents with late inning surges.
Once again, after getting down by 5-2 after five innings, the Phils jumped Rockies starter Mark Redman for back-to-back homers as Jayson Werth led off the sixth by lining an inside-the-park homer to deep centerfield followed by 2nd baseman Chase Utley’s 6th homer in 5 games, a shot to rightfield to narrow the game to 5-4. Then in the eighth and ninth innings, the Phils rung up the Colorado bullpen 2 and 3 runs, getting the lead and adding insurance to overtake the Rockies by a 9-5 score.
