Harman

worked the count full, then flew out to center.

He’s playing 2b, by the way—Utley is at first base tonight.

The Phils scored their two runs in the first when Coste doubled in Werth and Utley, both of whom had walked.

As Whitey used to say...

...’those darn base on balls!’

The Pittsburgh Announcers...

Sounded excited about the fact that Adam Eaton has hit three career homeruns. He’s alright, but he ain’t exactly Carlos Zambrano or Mike Hampton at the plate.

by Cluttered_JML on Apr 25, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

From what I know of the Pgh announcers, we should just be glad they’re more or less watching the game. I was really hoping we’d get Harry & Co tonight, but twas not to be.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Second inning ends on the old 3-6-1 DP. Utley started it, Bruntlett turned it nicely and just beat the runner when Eaton caught it at the bag. End of 2, 2-0 Phils.

I am excited to see Harman, I think he can do some good things for us in a year or two…

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This was a good spot to give him the start. Would be great to see him get a knock or two before he goes back down… Donald is in the lineup tonight for the R-Phils.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Werth

Crushes a 3-1 BP fastball out of the yard to right-center. 3-0 Phils.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 7:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Werth...

...really deserves a full time gig in my opinion. After Victorino comes back, I think Jenkins gets relegated to pinch hit opportunities and the occasional start for both Pat (he will need some breaks once he cools down) and Werth.

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree, though I guess that depends on what you mean by “full-time.” The big concern with Werth is durability. As that’s also the case IMO with Vic, there’s a good easy job share to be had.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean he should be the RF starter. I think he deserves his chance as he has done nothing but perform for the past year now.

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see him as a 1993-Incaviglia. Platoon-plus. Even though he’s the RH half, he gets more than half the AB.

Unless Jenkins’ downhill slide has accelerated to a rate well beyond what you’d normally expect, he’s better than what we’ve seen.

by taco pal on Apr 25, 2008 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also

This will allow STG to be the very occasional pinch hitter, but more often a pinch runner/defensive replacement for our slow footed machine…

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Phils add another run on a Burrell “double”-it should have been a single, but Bay screwed up the relay-and Coste “single” on a ball that probably should have been an inning-ending groundout.

You see why the Pirates have even more errors than we do. Either way, it’s now 4-0 Phils.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 7:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

These Pittsburgh announcers really sound like Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria doing an impression of a boring announcing crew on “The Simpsons.”

Eaton getting a goodly number of swings and misses tonight.

If Duke had hit that ball to Taguchi, it would have clanked off his glove.

Forget Shearer and Azaria; these guys are doing bong hits on the commercial breaks.

Harman delivers!

RBI double scores Bruntlett, who had singled. Nice first hit for the career. 5-0.

Just Thinking...

I was thinking today about Pat Gillick’s greatest accomplishments as the Phillies GM. I came up with a few, and they are as follows… (note, I realize some of these aren’t exclusively PG). Anyway, at number one, I have the replenishing of the farm system. Number two, the signing of Utley. Number three, the signing of Werth. And his fourth best decision was/is not signing Howard long term. Anybody have anything else to add?

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The Phillies still have one of the worst farm systems in baseball.

by WholeCamels on Apr 25, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

I absolutely disagree. Three years ago, at the end of the Ed Wade era, we had one of the worst, if not the worst, farm system in baseball. However, Gillick put an end to signing unnecessary type A free agents. This has given us a lot of picks over the past three years. Now, I agree that Gillick has had nothing to do with the actual draft selections, however, I think he has placed an importance back on player development. Also, our farm system has many legitimate prospects who are both exciting and climbing the ladder. Most of our talent is still in the low levels, but as a whole, the farm system is continuing to rise in regards to the other 31 teams in baseball. Many, many legit prospects that I suggest you check out Camels as they are the future!

by Neduol Caz on Apr 25, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting topic.

I’d put the Moyer trade in there-he’s given them innings and whatever off-the-field stuff you’d like to credit-and in general I think it’s been good that he’s moved young players more aggressively.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know that our rate of prospect acquisition has increased appreciably since Gillick took over. We had a couple of terrible drafts when Wade was signing all those unnecessary free agents, but other than that it doesn’t seem to me like much has changed. I guess you can give Gillick credit for not signing as many unnecessary FAs though.

hmm

Eaton gives up a Bay solo HR to dead center, falls behind 3-0 to Doumit, then surrenders a double.

He lost it so quickly against the Mets on Sunday that I think a word from Coste would be in order.

That’s it.

Second straight start in which he was strong early, then just completely fell off the face of the earth (if “the earth” is taken to mean decent pitching).

Did Tom McCarthy say that there were 2 outs and that was one of the reasons why the pulled Burrell cause it was likely they wouldn’t get to him again? wtf?

First off, Burrell got on with one out and they changed him out after Coste singled, still with one out. It is a certainty that Burrell’s spot is coming up again.

I would have bet a sizable chunk of money-a couple hundred dollars, say-on Howard striking out there. And I’m by no means a rich man.

by dajafi on Apr 25, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would say pulling a left handed pitcher for a different left handed pitcher to face a right handed hitter is crazy (especially after the first one just got two outs), but Grabow is actually better against righties.

Someone explain to me the logic of putting Howard INTO a game that you’re already winning. Isn’t this the complete opposite of the strategy with Burrell? Doesn’t Howard jeopardize a game defensively as much or more so than Burrell?
