Game 26: Myers vs. Maholm
Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates, Apr 27, 2008 1:35 PM EDT
With their first series victory in Pittsburgh since 2001 already in hand, the Phils go for the sweep at PNC Park this afternoon behind Brett Myers. After winning his previous two starts in impressive fashion, Myers got roughed up somewhat against Colorado in his last outing as the Rockies reached him for 11 hits and six runs in seven innings, but a late rally got him off the hook with a no-decision in the Phillies' 8-6 win. For his career, Myers is 2-3 with a 2.31 ERA against the Pirates.
Pittsburgh starter Paul Maholm will look to improve on the efforts of Zach Duke and Matt Morris, each of whom was knocked around for six early runs in the first two games of this series. Maholm has won two of his three career starts against the Phillies, but with a high 6.50 ERA in those games. He's coming off his best start of the 2008 season, a six-inning victory against the Marlins last Tuesday.

THE PROPHESY HAS BEEN FULFILLED
Happy Pete, 4-6-3 after the Burrell walk, and the Phils are out in the 2nd. 1-0 Pirates.
My wife observed that Myers’ bunt was like watch Jon Lieber try to bunt, that some pitchers should not be allowed to do so.

2-0
Two-out single by LaRoche, passed ball/wild pitch (I missed which), Jose Bautista singles, and the Phils trail by two.
This definitely feels like their “eff it” game.
Half-Man/Half-Machine breaks up the no-no with a double.
Earlier in the inning, Howard popped out, bellowing an obscenity loud enough to get picked up on the broadcast.
oh, Bruntlett...
drives in Burrell with the RBI single, then gets picked off and thrown out at second.
Ok, Myers really sucks. I don’t even know what to say.
Its like he’s throwing BP up there. Maybe the bullpen was his calling.
Hey, if you take away McLouth his day doesn’t look so bad…
I do think attention span is part of it. He can focus for short bursts, as in the 2nd and 3rd today when he was pretty nasty. Then he fades out again.
yeah, that’s what I think it is. granted it is difficult to keep a high level of poise and discipline for a long period of time, but Myers has always struck me as damn near ADD when it came to his attention span. Not to mention that he is a basket case emotionally, so when he gets pumped up he can’t sustain it for an entire game and starts to lose focus.
Possibly why he was so dominant in the pen, because he only needed to get pumped for a few batters.
Myers
His 10 bombs allowed now leads the majors…(sigh).
Meh...
Today was a drag, but winning two series on the road and going 5-2 on the roadtrip with all the injuries/slumps, and it’s kind of hard to complain about this week.
