Game Four: Kendrick vs. Fogg
Philadelphia @ Cincinnati
The Phillies play another April game in the chilly north. It's been rainy in Ohio today and gametime temperature is projected around 45 degrees. Seriously, why schedule any games north of the Mason-Dixon line before April 20 or so?
Oh, I probably should write something about the game itself. Kyle Kendrick faces a dangerous Reds lineup that features sluggers Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. Kendrick won his only career start against Cincinnati last June, allowing four runs in six innings. He'll be opposed by Josh Fogg, the former "giant slayer" of the Rockies (he had an uncanny knack for winning matchups against other clubs' aces) who signed a one-year, $1 million deal this off-season. Can't think of any other teams that might have been able to use him... Fogg is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in four lifetime starts against the Phils.

It's unfortunate that so much weight has been placed on Kendrick. He's unlikely to replicate his success last season unless he can get his strikeout numbers close to what they were in the minors. It'd be nice if he were the team's #5, rather than the #3/4 they seem to be counting on.

Please, no pining for Josh Fogg.
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?

Game on?
Is anybody watching the television broadcast of this? Have they said whether or not the game is going to get in? I am watching on mlb.tv and they just black you out till the game starts, so I am sort of in limbo here. Thanks.

rain delay
I just got home and turned it on via mlb.tv. They've got the rain delay graphic.

notes that Jenkins has enormous career numbers vs. Fogg

Scamper
Rollins showing the secondary benefits of speed (the more pickoff throws you draw from the pitcher, the better the chance they throw it away).
Sac fly from Howard, virtually every well hit ball from Ryan to left this year. It's nice to see, but it'd be nice to watch him just crush one to right...

Pat's at-bat
Deep count, fouled off a couple tougher offerings, then destroyed one.
I always root for Burrell, but I think this year especially.
by dajafi on Apr 4, 2008 9:00 PM EDT 0 recs
I'm on MLB so can't see it but it showed Howards blast to left at the wall. Good to see that.

Announcers
I think I may have finally found a set of announcers worst than ours. Misquoted Howard's RBI total in '07. Talked about how Burrell had to be moved from third to first and then to the outfield only once we signed Thome. Then, said Jenkins didn't hit a single homerun in ST, however, he hit two if I remember. Maybe it is just me, but I hate little mistakes like this.
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 9:03 PM EDT 0 recs
also
said Jenkins had no HR in ST. If you're going to cite those stats, make sure they're correct.
Kendrick's gotten ahead of the first three guys, and given up two hits. He desperately needs a putaway pitch, or else he'll grow up to be Josh Fogg.

ugh
Our rotation is an enormous problem. KK's trying, but I'm afraid he's just not very good.
by dajafi on Apr 4, 2008 9:11 PM EDT 0 recs
This could get ugly and if KK keeps this up he'll not make it through 4.

Dajafi
I agree, a put-away pitch is a must. He did most everything right, got ahead of the hitters, located his pitches fairly well (a couple of close calls went against him), but still let a couple of hits fall.

KK
With the tough AB here. Feliz/Ruiz saw four pitches combined; Kendrick's about to see his seventh...

A question
Could Victorino be pressing ? Have noticed a disturbing trend called the fly out. Would he think he needs to make up for Rowands offense? It's just been in my head...

KK in the 2nd
Much better. Maybe Patterson's fluky hit in the first threw him off stride.

Woot. Now they all have homers EXCEPT Howard.

Yanks one out to right field. 5-1 Phils. Bats came to Cincy...

Feliz
Here are my thoughts on Feliz. We know he is well below average offensively. There is no getting around that fact. However, he will not be any worst then our third baseman last year, and will probably be a tick or two better. However, Feliz has already made several plays in the first three games that only Nooney could have possibly made last year. Helms and Dobbs would not have stood a chance. So, I think we should take the good with the bad, and stop harping on his minimal offensive talents.

3 hits in a row
Get on the BP phone Dubee. KK is done.

BABIP
It seems like our fears of Kendrick's BABIP have been legitimate.
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 9:50 PM EDT 0 recs
maybe you should reconsider. For people like Kendrick, ST can be telling.

At least KK bunts well. That was pretty exceptional.

Not just that...
Kendrick is an exceptional fielder and can handle the bat...

Relief Options?
Who do you think is going to come into the game? Durbin has pitched in two straight. Seanez? Lahey? Any thoughts?

Thats 3 of the 4 K's. I was wondering what So T. was thinking there.
by Steve-O- on Apr 4, 2008 10:27 PM EDT 0 recs
no Charlie will rightfully PH for him. So where's So?
by Steve-O- on Apr 4, 2008 10:37 PM EDT 0 recs
I say you let Kendrick pitch until another runner reaches safely. Whether that is one batter or 6. Gotta try and save the BP.
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 10:43 PM EDT 0 recs
You are probably right and it would be great to see KK get through the 6th...but his pitch count was up to 87 and has lost the control he had earlier. This lead could disappear rapidly.

Victorino
If he's going to suck all year, I'd rather know about it now.
by dajafi on Apr 4, 2008 11:08 PM EDT 0 recs
I really would give him a day off soon. He is much better than this pathetic start. BTW what did Charlie calll him in the office for the 15 minute chat? Jesus he needs to play to his ability and use that after-burner speed.

Maddog
Reverses his usual pattern: crappy first inning (which I didn't see until the last out--Battlestar Galactica premiere) stellar second.
Man do they need him to be solid this year. I think the rotation is what it is: a slightly below-average group that will be a work in progress for a few months at least. The BP has some upside, though. They could stink, but they could be above-average.
by dajafi on Apr 4, 2008 11:22 PM EDT 0 recs
I agree
The bullpen has the potential to be above average. You have no idea how much better it feels not to have to watch Alf and Joe Table make messes of the late innings.
Now (as long as Gordon doesn't come in) I actually feel confident that our guys can set 3 hitters down without giving up any runs.

Feliz, at risk of a second walk in the same game, swings 3-0 and singles to left.

The only thing I am scared about right now is a Tom Gordon appearance.
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 11:34 PM EDT 0 recs
Seanez was a nice pickup. I like the way he fits in the late innings. He very well could be a more reliable option than Gordon for the 7th or 8th when Lidge comes back.

Taguchi
Nice hustle double to lead off the 9th. If they score and it's not a save situation, does that mean no Gordon?
Also, do we call him So, Tags, or Gooch?
by dajafi on Apr 4, 2008 11:37 PM EDT 0 recs
Who posted the other night (tongue in cheek) Gordon had a nice 1-2-3-4-5-6 inning. That's what scares me.
by Steve-O- on Apr 4, 2008 11:38 PM EDT 0 recs
How about we show the baseball world our amazing command of the English language and go acronym with Taguchi by calling him STG. Sounds like a malformed disease. Oh well, try again.
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 11:46 PM EDT 0 recs
I feel like Romero's arm is going to fall off if we use him when we are up by 4 runs. Why not Condrey in this situation?
by Neduol Caz on Apr 4, 2008 11:48 PM EDT 0 recs
they need some innings from the starters
I'm not worried about this yet, but if it keeps up for a couple more weeks, yeah.
Normally I think Durbin would have come in tonight. But they noted in the paper today that he's pitched in the first three games--and he'd previously never gone consecutive days. Perhaps Cholly realizes that he'll need 3-4 from Durbin tomorrow with Eaton starting...
You must be on the live feed, NC--you've got them already winning, and I still have it on ;)
