May 15, 2008: James vs. Hamels
Atlanta @ Philadelphia
We're back after an unplanned interruption last night for the rubber game of this Braves series. Rumor has it that Larry Jones Jr. is out of the lineup for Atlanta, which is probably something of a relief for Cole Hamels.
The Phils are going for their first series win of the season against an NL East opponent.

I can't believe we didn't score with the bases loaded

Happy Pete seems to have just homered before I turned it on.

pantload of baserunners
It’d be nice to pick up one more run here…

I think he was trying. Seriously, half-swing grounder right at the shortstop?

Here he comes. Not jumping at the ball, and not pulling that one.
Stayed on it and crushed it.

yup
That HR was classic Howard: looks like a deep fly off the bat but just keeps going, and going, and going…

Suddenly Howard is showing signs of breaking out of the slump. This is a very good thing.

"suddenly"
7 game hitting streak?
Not to split semantic hairs, but he’s been looking much better for the better part of this week.

yes, but in the context of what has been a 40 game season to this point, for him to have started hitting in the last 7 games is pretty sudden.
But you are correct, by suddenly I mean “over the last week or so.”

I enjoyed that the broadcast flashed “HOME RUN” right as it bounced off the top of the wall.
Whatever—Happy’s got a career game going…

Feliz has one of the best third base arms I’ve ever seen
by WholeCamels on May 15, 2008 8:03 PM EDT 0 recs
53 pitches through 4 IP for Hamels. He’s got everything working tonight.
Braves lineup looks a lot less scary without Larry Jr.

walk?
Jimmy’s second (unintentional) walk this season?
by WholeCamels on May 15, 2008 8:09 PM EDT 0 recs
Yeah, I was probably more psyched about that than Victorino’s HR.
I started putting together some numbers last night looking at Phils hitters’ walk rates this season compared to their career norms. Rollins is the furthest down, but he’s not the only one.
Meanwhile, Hamels=awesome.

Would it be wrong to slag Feliz for that double play?

Feliz reverts to form
6-4-3 DP. Gotta go with what you know…

Assuming he maintains this pace…do you let cole go all 9?
by jemagee on May 15, 2008 8:46 PM EDT 0 recs
So i was watching the ‘pitch/fx’ version of the game at work…how accurate is the ‘pitch location’ version of that sucker, cause if accurate, ump has some consistency issues he should work on
by jemagee on May 15, 2008 8:51 PM EDT 0 recs
Yup. Still throwing hard, but the command is spotty all the sudden. And he’s at 105 pitches.
Get this guy and then grab the icepack.

You new to being a phillies fan? Cole says he can pitch, they believe him, and it’s a shut out, he’ll come out for the 9th and throw too many pitches…

Which one of you was the guy who fell at last nights game?

I strenuously object
To Cole Hamels pitching the 9th.

This is making my stomach hurt. Maybe we’re overreacting and it’ll be fine, but this is so unnecessary… and there’s the infield single for Schmucko.
Okay, time to go.

Heck, the comcast sportsnet folks were confused…took em until the 2-2 count to get the ‘yellow box’ off of first base

4 hitter
(alright, that was kind of cool anyway….)
by WholeCamels on May 15, 2008 9:20 PM EDT 0 recs
Good Hamels got a complete game shut out…it’s a good thing there’s an extra day of rest between now and his next outing….oh wait, you mean there’s not…and letting him pitch the 9th probably was silly in the long term of things?
Oh crap
by jemagee on May 15, 2008 9:20 PM EDT 0 recs
120 pitches exactly. Okay, that’s probably something I can live with.

The mets don’t have an ‘every day player with fire in his eyes’ – i think linda cohn got stupid.
Which phillies player has fire in his eyes….and what do you get for selling your soul to the devil?
by jemagee on May 15, 2008 9:41 PM EDT 0 recs
I am just wondering what 120 pitches did that 108 couldn’t have done other than put more stress on his young arm. Until baseball starts ignoring personal accomplishments and focus solely on playing well, they will continue to ruin young careers and ultimately water down the skill in MLB.
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
