May 17, 2008: Burnett vs. Eaton

Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies, May 17, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

After five straight games facing a left-handed starter, the Phils see a righty tonight in Toronto's A.J. Burnett. Geoff Jenkins returns to the lineup for the first time in a week; he's in right field, while Jayson Werth, Friday night's hero with three home runs and eight RBI, is in CF.

Burnett has struggled a bit this year with a 3-4 record and 4.94 ERA; against the Phillies, a familiar opponent from his years with the Marlins, Burnett is 4-7, 4.70 in his career. Adam Eaton, seeking his first win of 2008 in his ninth start, beat the Blue Jays last May 20 in his only career game against them, and has a career 2.91 ERA in 17 interleague starts.

4-3 Jays and Howard with a shot to put the Phils ahead, Howard crushes it, but right to Stairs.

Howard hit it hard, but chalk that up as another reason why Pat should be splitting the lefties.

I just woke up from a long nap to see we have a ballgame.

B8, Pat the Bat leads off with a 6-3.
Bruntlett PH for Jenkins FO down the RF line.
Dobbs K.

Yecch. Was hoping for 1 or 2 to get on base to set up the 9th at least.

So what’s Bruntlett swinging at the first pitch for? C’mon he’s never seen Downs before. Very minor league..Dumb. Did I mention stoopid?

unimpressive bench tonight. You gotta wonder when the better move is to have Eaton lead off the 6th and, if he gets on, pinch run So “Bad” Taguchi.

Really

Rod Barajas 2 HR night. Barajas a difference-maker.

In my mind, I’m throwing batteries.

by Wet Luzinski on May 17, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Oh My Rod

.667 % against his old team. In HR that is.

by Steve-O- on May 17, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

Rod 10 rbi last year in 48 games…tonight 4.

by Steve-O- on May 17, 2008 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

which I believe was $210,000 per RBI.

ugg

6-3 on Howard’s error. This game feels like eating the food you last vomited last year, and remembering why you’ve avoided that food for a year.

ruled a hit. At least

we may get to move past the line “except for Opening Day, Gordon’s ERA’s been a sparking…”

by Wet Luzinski on May 17, 2008 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Very un Gordon like. Need this pitching change. But looks like it’s gonna be too late. My O My Eaton and the bomb…....

I've never seen

a player going on the 60 day with mental illness but I think Eaton could make baseball history by doing it.

3 outs at home tonight

why teams allow Seanez to throw them out without making pitches is beyond me. But whatever!

by Wet Luzinski on May 17, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

who’s pinch hitting for the pitcher? I’m guessing Ruiz?

by Wet Luzinski on May 17, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

Victorino, my bad. Missed that switch and came late to this game.

Jim-Me

So good to have him back. 3 hits tonight with 2 doubles.

a pro. Very rare anymore to see him or Utley end a game. It’s a pride thing.

We are blessed to have them both.

Well lets hope KK gets ‘em tomorrow. See ya then.

just saw the replay of Barajas slam

eked its way over the fence in RF. None out in the second. I’d say Eaton earned this one. But I still want the clubhouse attendants to put itching powder in Barajas’ uniform tomorrow morning.

Kris Benson begins rehab… sometime soon right?

by Wet Luzinski on May 17, 2008 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

Wow. The wrath of Rod.

Glad I missed this one.

by dajafi on May 17, 2008 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

This is how predictably bad Adam Eaton is. The following is an actual exchange I had with my parents. It has not been edited for effect at all. Eaton has loaded the bases with no one out. He has just fallen behind Barajas.

Me: I’m sorry.

Mom (confused): Why? For what?

Me: For what is about to happen.

Not 2 seconds later, Barajas hits a grand slam out to right field. 4-0 Blue Jays.

Me: We can just go home now if you want to…

I feel your pain FM.

By the time we book flights, room and car besides the tickets you can imagine it’s a crapshoot who we are gonna see. In SF we got Hamels and Moyer and was elated, it coulda been Myers and Eaton…OMG. As for Eaton I hope he continues to have bad outings so maybe, just maybe The Phils will make a much needed roster change. I’d rather see a kid with promise instead of the 24 million dollar mistake. Thanks for letting me vent…I feel better now.
