May 25: Sampson vs. Hamels

Philadelphia Phillies at Houston Astros, May 25, 2008 2:05 PM EDT

The Phillies try to salvage a split in Houston after a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in last night's game.  They have to like their odds, with lefty ace Cole Hamels taking the hill against Astros righty Chris Sampson.  Hamels has been excellent lately, allowing no runs in the last 16 innings while striking out 17.  He leads all National League lefthanders in ERA (2.61) and strikeouts (65).

It’s disappointing when it’s the offense seems to be the primary problem in a game.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

0, 1, 12, 7, 3, 3. Actually I guess splitting those six games isn’t that bad—but this team generally isn’t going to win too many when they score four or fewer.

I’m still a little angry about that ninth inning last night.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it wasn’t just the ninth inning last night, utleys base running blunder in the first inning didn’t help, victorinos plate perfromances in 2 straight games (both lost 4-3) in key situations aren’t anything to write home about, the poor performance of the pinch hitters, the ‘best’ pinch hitter not being used regardless of the lefty righty match up nonsense…I understand it was a great throw from erstad (i guess) and that fourth run wasn’t helpful…but still, the offense is blowing too many scoring opportunities for my liking…goling into last nights game, lefties were hitting over 350 (i think they said 382) against moehler….this team should have torn him a new one.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe the game will be better with no audio…

Rollins at bat not so good

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

I am back now…I am not pleased with the little that I saw while I was away. Hope they can give Cole more than 3 to work with.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

It’s like watching an old-timey newsreel. Maybe because my wife is playing ragtime piano in the background.

/ragtime /= euphemism for something else this time

by WholeCamels on May 25, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

Oh no, now there’s sound.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

Phils go in order in the first. Strikeout and a coupla weak-o grounders.

by WholeCamels on May 25, 2008 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

damnit matsui. miss one please!

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

ump is really not giving anything on the borderlines.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

Why didn’t jenkins catch that?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

because he sucks. period.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

and he hates cole hamels and likes to set him up for failure.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Jesus H. Christ!!!! They are gonna make him throw 50 pitches in the first inning!

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

Carlos Lee trying to kill the umpire

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

too bad…on the bright side we might get someone with a bigger strike zone.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

cause that will helpthe phillies hit chris sampson?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

they aren’t going to hit him anyways…I am more concerned with Cole shutting them down.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

So he got the first two guys, and then… ?

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Tejeda got a single up the middle berkman got a ‘pop fly’ single to right and tejeda ended up on third, carlos lee bloodied the side of the home plate umpires head with a back swing and he’s done for the game so they are pausing to reset the umps.

And I discovered Collegiate Competetive Eating was on CBS….which baffles me.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And about 10 minute delay and hamels has thrown 26 pitches already

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh. That’s the worst thing.

This team is really aggravating right now.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

They’re always pretty aggravating, I’ve just accepted it as being a Philadelphia sports fan, aggravation comes with the territory

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll give ya an Amen on that brother.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

thats a fucking joke. fuck Carlos Lee.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

after a 10 minute delay, lee goes check swing full and then 3 run home run that was immediately known off the bat.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

sooooo god damned predictable. of course Hamels is not going to be able to come right back out and be sharp after you make him sit for 10 minutes between pitches. that’s terrible. Already ruined my fucking day.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

I think every guy in this Astros lineup has done something traumatic to the Phillies at one time or another. And this is after Biggio retired.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

It’s not like carlos lee is a bag of flaming poo….i mean he’s probably better than the entire phillies outfield corps except minus burrell?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

still, that is just plain bad. I don’t care who is batting…it makes me furious.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I couldn’t tell.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright Jenk make up for that baffling outfield play, thank you

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, there you go. Apparently it just takes me yelling at the computer how much he sucks.

3-2

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Jenkins

New intro music Bob Dylans “You better start swimming or you’ll sink like a stone, for the times they are a changin.”
Even with the big number 3 HR for the year he still sucks. Very poor signing for the $$$.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it fits the gillick pattern

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Carlos Ruiz takes to the Pedro Feliz approach just a bit too well

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Ruiz sucks too. Remember the Phils hype ‘bout how he was gonna have a break out year, all the positive crap. He’s having a break down year. OPS 300 less than Coste…so why is he the starter?

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Whether he’s the starter or not he’d get the start today because in baseball it’s impossible for a catcher to start a day game after a night game.

I agree that coste should be the starter though

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought that one was gone, or at least extra bases…nice catch shane.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

If Carlos Lee wasn’t making catches there frequently this weekend, I’d be more impressed :)

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

good inning for cole.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

nice at bat as well

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamels with a nice second inning, economy of pitches…

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Cole Hamels is a good baseball player. The first inning was not his fault, he knows it, and he is going to win this game no matter what!

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

As much as I like cole, that home run was his fault

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Shane gets a chance to do some atoning.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Fails and on a 2-0 pitch as well

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Awesome AB for Hamels. Rollins’ double I thought was gone off the bat… let’s get ‘em in.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Worthless Shane Victorino. Worthless.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Another bad AB in a big spot for Victorino. He’s pressing.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, we’ll take that I guess. Tie game, sac fly. Chase “just missed it.”

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Just a single big boy, just a single.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, i’m just glad he only swung at one of the five pitches out of the strike zone

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard is definitely seeing the ball much better. He looks much more comfortable up there. Good news. Now if only Chase could start mashing again.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Pat Burrell is good ‘middle in’ according to the astros announcers.

Are there players who aren’t good with pitches middle in?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

It’s easy to see how the Phils lead the league in the long ball. That said 2 outta 3 have to be hot at all times.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

That there is one of those disppointing offensive innings i was referring to

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

agreed. Chance to go up 2 or more…no dice. At least its tied. If we can have 3 more “disappointing innings” where we only score 1, and Cole can lock them down for 4 or 5 more, then we should be good. But it never works that way does it?

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes it does…just need cole to have a few more quick innings to make up for that first inning so he doesn’t have to be pulled too quickly

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

This has the makings of a very bad inning…

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

Utley not helping.

So it’s tejedas ‘birthday’ today

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m starting to dislike this berkman fella

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Alright. I have seen enough of this garbage. I’m going to do something productive with my sunday.

by FuquaManuel on May 25, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Cole….please stop pitching to carlos lee

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

WTF – double steal with those two?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I’ve got some family obligations and will check in later.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels flat-out stinks at holding runners on. I think it’s because so few guys reached base against him in the minors.

I had the whole inning with the sound off. It slightly helps in terms of keeping down the rage.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Why any pitcher would throw Jenkins anything other than “curveball at his feet,” I have no idea. The guy can’t hit that pitch, and he can’t or won’t take it.

by dajafi on May 25, 2008 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

ALways like the abililty to use the ‘helping his own cause’ statement

How come all the best pinch hitting candidates on the phillies are lefties?:)

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels’ at-bat that inning was like 28 times better than Jimmy’s.

by WholeCamels on May 25, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

It would be nice if he would start PITCHING better

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Deal

Everyone has a clunker once in awhile, and it’s not like there haven’t been extenuating circumstances.

by WholeCamels on May 25, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Seanez (however you wanna pronounce it) already up in the pen.

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

You know what, there are two outs, ignore bourn and just focus on getting the hitter out and bourns speed is irrelevant…

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels worst outing of the year so far, only 4 innings and 0 Ks?

Ugh

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Ok all you game quitters, come on back

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

I’m back. Oh I see the Phil are up. I guess I’m a phan again. (giggles)

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 4:22 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus Charlie, why the heck do you have ruiz bunting?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

I really don’t know especially with 2 strikes.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

Dobbs

pinch hit triple plates 2….

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

did they score that a triple? Should be a double advancing on matsuis mental error

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

Mercy Rule?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

MLB shows it a triple, announcers didn’t know what way it’d go.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

Utley

Oh My was he due…great to see.

by Steve-O- on May 25, 2008 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

The astros bring their closer in to pitch the 9th?

by jemagee on May 25, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

This was truly a Philadelphia fan’s discussion thread. If you read this without seeing the box score, you’d never know they won the game.
