May 30: Myers vs. Hendrickson

Florida Marlins @ Philadelphia Phillies

The top two teams in the NL East meet up for the first game of a three game weekend series, with the surprising first-place Marlins facing the surging Phillies.

Phillies starter Brett Myers hopes to close what has otherwise been a disastrous month of May (0-4, 6.67 ERA) on a positive note.  Marlins starter Mark Hendrickson goes for win #8.

Meyrs off to a craptastic start.

With the day off couldn’t they have, you know, ‘skipped’ myers?

by jemagee on May 30, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Time to put Myers on the DL. Just give him 2 weeks to clear his head and figure out if it is somethong physical. Call up Happ, give him 2 starts and see how it goes. We need Myers to pitch well down the stretch.

Thanks for a good laugh. Myers start doesn’t surprize me. He really is an asshole and I think it’s all self inflicted. I wanna close, I wanna close….Geesh.

A lot of guys are aholes and a lot of guys have issues upstairs. Who knows if that is what this is. But Myers has pitched well before and they need him to take a break.

I agree totally. When you have more confidence with Adam Eaton starting something is way wrong with that picture. Course the Philles would never try to hide a medical problem, no not the Phillies…never happen.

Nice AB by Howard a 10 pitch walk.

Always nice to see a three-run jack as I turn on the game. Coste=beast.

Coste

Gets us even with a 3 run blast. He is the right handed Dobbs. What a treat.

Wow Coste. I was never a believer before.

Pretty fine AB from Myers there to draw the walk.

Now: good Jimmy or bad Jimmy?

I wonder if Hendrickson is a good comp for J.A. Happ. Big lefty, not-great velocity, but it probably looks faster because he’s 12 feet tall. Also, some control issues.

This might be the best stretch of Shane’s career. 11 doubles already despite missing those couple weeks.

Time to fit Chase for the cape and tights. That was freakin’ awesome.

Utley

I like a good LH swing for some reason. I love his because it’s so compact. A pure hitter.

Myers got in trouble in the first inning because HanRam knocked the first pitch into CF for a hit. After that at bat, I believe Hendrickson was the next guy he got an 0-1 count on. You can’t pitch from behind in the majors and Myers is having all kinds of problems with that this year.

The phillies will need more than 7 to win this game

by jemagee on May 30, 2008 8:05 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I have no idea how they scored that last at bat by Happy Pete as a hit. Uggla had him by two strides with a good throw. My scorecard has it as E-4.

How often do you see Feliz look at two called strikes?

by Bilzo on May 30, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Feliz saw twice as many pitches as the other two batters in the inning, COMBINED!

by Bilzo on May 30, 2008 8:12 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Myers strikes out the side. After 1 K his last start.

Myers strikes out the side. Maybe he just needed the runs? Ha?

Ramirez

He’s a good kid I hope he is OK. What a shot.

by Steve-O- on May 30, 2008 8:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope he’s OK too, but I wouldn’t be heartbroken if he got a bruise that kept him out for say…the next two games.

Howard

I was curious why they pulled a lefty to put in a righty to face howard. Duh.

by Bilzo on May 30, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope that 11 is enough. I feel a little more secure.

by Bilzo on May 30, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow…this is lookin’ good! When all the guys are hitting at once, its a task to keep this team under 10 runs….in the first half of the game.

The offense ain’t this good, but I am plesently surprised.

Why the hell is wheeler pumping up clay condrey?

by jemagee on May 30, 2008 9:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Goofy with 106 pitches. I’m puzzled.

by Steve-O- on May 30, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Chollie figures the longer he leaves Myers in, the less likely he is to hang onto the QS.
I’m a Clay Condrey fan myself, ever since the goofy game last year against Florida where Barajas stood up and let a run in, and then Myers hurt himself. Condrey came in and snagged a liner back through the box to end the inning. Phils later won the game, after imploding in that inning.

Myers with 10K, seriously.

Jeez, all of the sudden he is looking unhittable. I am gonna withhold my judgments until his next start, but I suspect he might have turned a mental corner.

by FuquaManuel on May 30, 2008 9:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i’m gonna withold my judgement about him turning a corner for more than 2 games personally

I’ve been watching the game on the phone for the last however long since I posted. Myers looks fantastic. His velocity still isn’t quite what we might like-seems like he’s sitting 88-89, up to 93 on one or two occasions-but so long as he’s hitting his spots, who cares.

The only slight bummer about this game is that the Marlins have so damn many relievers, it’s impossible to blow out their bullpen for the next two…
