May 31: Nolasco vs. Hamels

Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, May 31, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

Probably you didn't think Cole Hamels would be the holdout as the Phils try to complete a full swing through the rotation with each starter earning a victory, but that's how it has turned out: the team's incredible offensive outburst didn't start in earnest until after Hamels had departed last Sunday's 15-6 victory in Houston. Since then, Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, Adam Eaton and Brett Myers have been the beneficiaries as the team has scored 45 runs--mostly early in games--to run the win streak to five. Hamels has enjoyed only mixed results against the Florida Marlins, with a 2-2 record and 4.13 ERA in four career starts. Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco is 1-2, 6.60 against the Phillies.

Hanley Ramirez, Florida's superstar shortstop, is in the lineup tonight despite leaving last night's 12-3 Phillies victory with a hand injury. Carlos Ruiz and Geoff Jenkins are both back in for the Phils.

Victorino’s been a wrecking ball lately.

But then, so has everyone else in the lineup.

So IBB to Howard but not to Utley?

That wasn’t until Nolasco had already fallen behind in the count.

I have nowhere else to say it, but listening to tim mccarver and joe buck do dodgers/mets game today almost made my ears explode, they tried to fit ever old school cliche in that they could

Chase Utley’s wife almost looking vaguely Jolie-esque in this picture. Is there any downside to being Utley right about now?

This inning has sucked

Golly gee Shane. This man is wildin’ out.

Damnit. Harry Kalas with the most dramatic flyout call in the history of baseball.

by FuquaManuel on May 31, 2008 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

I feel sorry for Harry… He made a great call, except it wasn’t a HR.

by Neduol Caz on May 31, 2008 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

I feel sorry for him because he is obviously losing it.

by FuquaManuel on May 31, 2008 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly my point. HAHA. He just did it again with Pat. I will always love harry though, he is the voice I remember mos from my childhood.

by Neduol Caz on May 31, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Jeez…Harry called that Pat Burrell flyout a little better, but I could still feel the excitement in his voice.

Hamels just falls apart at the seams. This sucks. First time in a while that I am considering going to do something else. boo.

This ump really seems to be squeezing Hamels. Nothing low, nothing on the edges.

by FuquaManuel on May 31, 2008 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Looking like a short night for hamels…not as bad as last time, but he might not make it through six

by jemagee on May 31, 2008 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

This is why you don’t sign hacks like Helms and Barajas…because when they suck, and you let them go they come back and play like superstars just to stick it to you.

by FuquaManuel on May 31, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that’s it, of course.

I admire the plate approach of many of the phillies tonight….why bother making the pitcher throw more than one or two pitches per at bat

by jemagee on May 31, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

8 pitches in that inning for nolasco, that’s just awesome

by jemagee on May 31, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels has just been up with everything tonight. I have to wonder how much of it is the fact that the ump has consistently called the stuff that is down balls. He obviously doesn’t have his stuff either, but I think it is some of both.

Ok, see you later Cole. Jesus Christ…what is his deal these days?

by FuquaManuel on May 31, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe all those pitches charlie had him throw were a bad idea?
