Pitching-wise, it doesn't get much better than this... should be fun.

Well, here we go. Cole in the first inning of an afternoon game… not great things for him. How this goes could tell us something.

First man retired on a grounder back to Cole.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels gets the second man to ground back to the mound as well, then flirts with disaster as Winn pulls one home-run distance but foul, and drives a ball into the left-center field gap that Victorino-with a great read and superb closing speed-tracks down for the third out.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

Then Victorino hits one to the same place… which Rowand can’t track down. Leadoff double.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

And that’s why you don’t put an inferior hitter like Eric Bruntlett second against an ace. He strikes out.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Lincecum strikes out Utley on a sick 3-2 breaking ball. That’s the best hitter in the game, helpless as I would be.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Howard ends the inning with a flyout that sounded better off the bat than it proved to be.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Aurilia doubles with two outs in the second. Looked like a popup off the bat. I hate OFJOAB.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Cole ends the inning with a backward K of Ortmeier.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

Second straight leadoff double for the Phils, as Burrell rips one into the gap.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

Lincecum strikes out Jenkins on the changeup. This guy is really amazing.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

Happy Pete rips a single down the left-field line; the third baseman almost caught it, so Burrell had to hold at third. One out for Ruiz.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh, crap. Ruiz pops up, no advance. Two out, Hamels up.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels strikes out on three pitches. Scoreless through 2.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels strikes out the side in the third. Four now for each pitcher. Cole’s thrown about 45 pitches.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Both pitchers are flat out dealing right now.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Victorino called safe on a close play at first base—Phils might have gotten a break there. Scored an error. Third straight inning with the leadoff man on.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

Bruntlett singles to right—but again, they can’t get the extra base as Victorino holds at second. I guess it’s not worth risking it with Utley coming up.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Utley swung at at least 2 ball fours.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

Utley pops up after a lengthy battle. They’re making Lincecum work, but nothing to show for it yet. Maybe Howard-now batting .168!-can break through.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

When will they move Howard down in the order? They need to try something.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Burrell comes through big time.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Burrell is just outstanding. Two-run double, 2-0 lead.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

The contrast between Burrell and Jenkins is pretty damn stark. He strikes out on three to end it.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Lets see if Cole can lock em down again.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

nope. This continues the pattern of the Phils starters being unable to get three quick outs after scoring in the previous half. Damnit.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Rowand strikes out on an outside fastball for the second out in the fourth.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Giants score as the next man singles to center; close play at the plate.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

Tie game on the Aurilia double. After he was down 0-2. Goddammit.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

I gotta say this

I’m sorry fellas but both Jenkins and Ruiz suck…ok I feel better now.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Hamels is all of a sudden having trouble getting the final strike on people.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

Phils with another big opportunity here in the 5th: first and third, no out after a single and an error.

And Utley pops up the second pitch to right. Unreal.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

looks like Burrell is gonna have to do it again after Howard strikes out here.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Howard walks. Good at bat.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Howard’s numbers since getting benched are still awful, but he’s having better ABs.

Victorino scores on the wild pitch! 3-2.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Mr. Irrelevant with a chance to blow this one open.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

C’mon Favre. Just a flyout or a non-DP groundout. The second run is huge here.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

manages a sac fly. kind of disappointing, but I’ll take the run.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Disappointing? After his first five weeks? I’ll absolutely take that.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point. Still, I would really have liked more than 2 runs out of this.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Lincecum with his second WP of the inning. Now if Happy can luck into one, we’ll get two…

but he flies out to CF, ending the inning.

Hamels has 81 pitches, Lincecum something like 94.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

This BETTER be Hamels’ last inning.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

He’ll go one more with the bottom of the order.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

Jeez, Hamels missed losing the lead by about 2 feet.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

THere it goes. Aurilia hits a bomb.

Really poor job of focusing by Hamels.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

I thought that was gone off the bat. Wind evidently knocked it down.

Jose Castillo? Barf. Now here’s Aurilia… oh, eff me.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

You were right FM…he’s done. Shit.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Shut down innings are important. We have been unable to get them…Thus, we have been in 3 close games with the lowly Giants.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t generally criticize Manuel’s bullpen management… and indeed he makes the good call here in pinch-hitting Harman.

If Hamels is upset about that, fine. He punched his own ticket out of this one. You can’t surrender two leads immediately, twice.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:30 PM EDT reply actions

Two-run leads, that is.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

For some reason he was throwing almost all FB’s and Changeups very few curves. I,m sure something will be said about that.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Victorino flies out to dead center. End of 6, 4-4.

Durbin coming in, which I’m less than delighted about. He might be trying to not use Lidge today.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Durbin has been good. Why you not delighted?

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Nice, 4-6-3 inning ender. RUNS PLEASE!!!!

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

oh wait, hold on, hasn’t happened yet.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Give it time my son, give it time.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

nice steal by Utley

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Mr. Irrelevant…make yourself useful. homerun please.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Ah let’s see Feliz, Ruiz, Jenkins and Bruntlett..there’s 4 reasons.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

oops forgot “can’t see the ball Howard”....that’s 5 reasons

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Mr. Irrelevant continues to come up small.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

I really hate Jenkins. Not as a person, but right now he’s literally the last guy on the team I want to see at bat in that kind of spot.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

i hate him as a person. I don’t know why, I just do.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Real Clutch

This fucker is killing us.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

God damnit. This is a friggin joke.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Another two-out run for the Giants. How the hell this crappy team is beating us, I have no clue.

Phils trail 5-4 and Castillo-JOSE FRICKING CASTILLO!-on third. Now an IBB to the evidently very dangerous Rich Aurilia.

Know how many doubles Aurilia has this season? Two.

He got them both today.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

This kind of nonsense makes me hate this team.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

With respect, you’re overreacting.

Even the best teams lose dumb games like this-series like this-and the Philies aren’t one of the best teams.

The season isn’t over, and for that matter this game isn’t even over. Buck up ;)

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That said, I do want to break things as I’m sitting here.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

thats why I come on the game thread to vent, you see. Me and the Phils have a long, abusive relationship that has seen several TV remotes cracked and many a bruised hand. I have found that since I have used TGP games threads to vent my hand is much less sore and my TV remotes are much more…intact.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I know I am overreacting, sorry. Needed to vent.

We will get one more Utley at bat before its all over. Hopefully we can get down to Pat as well.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s why we’re here…

And I’m pretty annoyed that it’s Happy Pete here rather than Dobbs.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Strike zone seems to be getting bigger as the afternoon gets later…

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

HAHA, Ruiz hits a homer.

looks like we are not the only ones incapable of shut down innings.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

CHOOCH BABY!!!

Tied up.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

Did the wind knock that down or what?

That ball was crushed, and landed in the flowerbed.

by phatj on May 4, 2008 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

Inning ends with a whimper as Dobbs and Victorino are retired.

Lidge coming in for the fourth straight game. Not sure I like this.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

I mean, I like it as strategy-there’s no possible save situation-but is a tired Lidge better than a relatively fresh Tom Gordon?

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, Molina didn’t even leave the batters box on that tap out.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

That’s a toos up. Maybe Lidge but he was a bit off yesterday.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Great, efficient inning there. He could possibly go out for another one. I think he only threw about 4 pitches.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was pretty amazing on Lidge’s part.

Both from a fantasy standpoint and a fandom standpoint, I’d really like to see him earn the win right here.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

Bottom of the 9th, here is an example of why switching Howard and Burrell would have given Steve O a more positive feeling. we shall see eh.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

Lets go Chase. Be a hero.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

This pitcher’s tough. Wins the battle with Utley.

Here’s Howard…

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:36 PM EDT reply actions

Howard works the two-out walk. Burrell time.

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Howard has been getting the BBs, that is encouraging that he is turning pitchers counts into walks.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Damnit. Now we have no chance. Irrelevant is coming up.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

Why do you call him Mr. Irrelevant? Was he the last guy taken in the NFL draft one year?

by dajafi on May 4, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

No, just because he has accomplished pretty much nothing for the team this year.

He got lucky there today.

by FuquaManuel on May 4, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Omi god he did it.

by Steve-O- on May 4, 2008 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

BALLGAME.

Third error of the day by the Giants, bad throw doesn’t get Howard, and the Phils win.

I’ll take it ;)
