Game 36: Myers vs. Webb

Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks, May 8, 2008 3:40 PM EDT

The finale of this entertaining four-game set in Phoenix comes this afternoon, as Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb faces the Phillies' Brett Myers. If the Phils are to leave Arizona with a series win, they'll have to snap a streak of nine straight victorious starts by Webb, including seven this season. He does not, however, have great career numbers against Philadelphia: 2-3, 3.99 in eight career starts. Myers, who took a no-decision after a seven-inning, ten-strikeout performance on Saturday, is 2-1, 3.00 in five games against the D'backs, including four starts.

well, this is different...

I’m working at a client’s office, intermittently following the game via Gameday rather than mlb.tv. With the D’bags announcers, this is probably a plus, but it does mean that I’ll be playing catch-up all day in terms of what happens.

Gameday has Myers’ fastball coming in consistently low/mid-90s—a good sign, if accurate.

crap

Young 2-run homer. 2-1 AZ. Bad Brett today?

I just noticed that Burrell has the day off, but it’s Taguchi playing, not Werth. Bit questionable there…

Myers escapes trouble in the second: two singles, 6-4-3 DP, swinging K of Webb.

Bad Brett today

5-1 bottom of 4th

that’s just based on glancing at espn.com, nothing more.
I mean, maybe he’s being unconscionably squeezed by the ump, but what I saw was the score was 2-1, bases were loaded with none out, and he went to a 2-0 count before a 3-run double. That bespeaks a certain difficulty throwing strikes.

His walk rate and strikeout rate appear to be in his normal range, despite his struggles this year. His problem is that he’s just giving up a lot of home runs, which suggests that his location in the strike zone is off.

Or just really bad luck.

I’ve kind of turned it off… will keep checking in, but now it’s 6-1 and, well, it doesn’t look good for the boys. Split in Arizona isn’t the worst possible outcome.

Myers stinks. Urgently needs to work some things out.

Barf.

I hope that 121 pitch game had nothing to do with today’s stinker. And he STILL threw over 100 pitches.
