June 13: Kendrick vs. Wellemeyer
Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals, Jun 13, 2008 8:15 PM EDT
Right after contending with one of the National League's two surprise teams in Florida, the Phillies come to St. Louis and face the other. The Cardinals are tied with the Phils for the second-best record in the NL (40-28, behind only the Cubs), but they're currently without both their best pitcher (Adam Wainwright) and hitter (Albert Pujols), and a sense remains that they're playing somewhat over their heads. One of the biggest reasons why is Todd Wellemeyer, who starts tonight's game for the Cards. After three undistinguished seasons for three different teams, mostly as a reliever, the 29 year-old Wellemeyer has taken to the starting rotation with a 7-1 record and 2.93 ERA, likely good enough to earn an all-star berth. He's got a 3.52 ERA and no decisions in five career appearances against the Phillies.

I’m having trouble believing that the Wellemeyer I’m seeing is the guy who put up that record and ERA… this pitcher looks horrible.
What the hell kind of at bat did they just have kendrick have
And these cardinal announcers are making my ears bleed

Does all this first pitch swinging contribute to the genius of larussa?

But it’s BRILLIANT I mean, Tony Larussa is doing it so it must be brilliant, right

I am not saying it is genius or not, but it makes sense. You can either have an 8 hole hitter trying to drive in your 5/6/7 hitters, or you can have the 8 hole hitter transform into the 9 hole hitter and allow your 1/2/3 hitters to drive him in. Basically, you are placing an extra emphasis on the 1/2/3 hitters over the 5/6/7 hitters, which, is kind of a smart thing to do.
I’ve read the arguments in much more detail and the affect is mostly negligible in the long run, it’s not like your traditional 8 hitter doesn’t suck too…i mean would it make a difference if feliz batted 9th (yes i know, but he SHOULD bat 8th every game)

I’ve always been of the opinion that when somebody is ready to come back in the rotation someone is ready to be replaced….that’s just brilliance

one cardinal announcer said that when talking about their injured pitchers coming back and who they’d replace :)

Part of the problem is that Wellemeyer works pretty slowly. They’ve got too much time to think of stupid things to talk about.
The bigger problem of course is that they are just plain stupid.

Which athletes Think they are bigger than the game and are hard to watch?
I can’t wait for these guys to talk about how someone should be more like josh hamilton.
The nationals thing is ridiculous, the manager was out of line.
And they think baseball has a higher reputations than other sports?
Good lord make it stop

“It seems like the Phillies have been up [to bat] this entire game. The Cardinals have been up for a minute and a half. Skip Schumaker ran around the bases and that was it.”
—Cardinals announcer
It’s true because the Cardinals pitchers are paaaaaiiiiinnnnffffuullly sssssllllooooowwww
I keep having to remind myself that’s not Steve Trachsel out there.
that confused me too…so i started reading about the death of usenet instead…it’s sad, i used usenet to auction off stuff in 1994 so i could afford to move to california.

Talk about an explosion. This is what we were missing from the Florida series. I think it is vital that we take this series from the team with the second best record in the National League (tied with us) (Really????? this team is tied with us) Go Phils
The marlins have better pitching….oh yeah it’s raining in kansas

Not to be the guy who farts during the toast, but we have seen something potentially like this before.
I’m fairly concerned that I lost a year or so off my life that night.
YOu know i was channel surfing and thought i’d come back and the inning would be over already, holy crap

There’s a fire in the belly of tony larussa – get him a beer so he can douse it

In other games that ‘matter’ to the phillies
marlins down 4 headed to the top of the 9th, cubs down 1 as blue jays bat in the 8th

Kendrick
I’d love to see where he ranks among ‘pitchers receiving run support’ since he’s been called up. I’m sure he’s top 10, at the very least.

Probably pretty easy to do
I always had the feeling that he got an inordinant amount of double plays myself
