June 16: Hamels vs. Colon
Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies, Jun 16, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
First, I apologize: the Phillies probably lost yesterday because I titled the game thread "June 16." Of course, it was actually June 15. We regret the error, and especially the defeat.
So the Red Sox are here. No Ortiz, a hobbling Manny Ramirez, and we miss Josh Beckett, but they're still damn good. Bartolo Colon, who just might have represented a better contingency-plan investment than Kris Benson, starts tonight against Cole Hamels. The forecast calls for pain, at least when the big fella's up to bat.

When did the Red Sox jump the shark?
baseball-zeitgeist wise? My vote is for the Damon chick flick that was filmed with the Red Sox winning it all in the background. I don’t think I’ve stopped vomiting since.
It’s a real shame, because I don’t like the Yankees either. But now I believe the entire AL East to be problematic. Rays might as well win it all.
the red sox ‘jumped’ the shark once they beat the cardinals…once the curse was broken and they weren’t the ‘hard luck’ kids or the ‘lovable’ losers, or whatever the hell they were they just become a free spending team that won a lot….there was sort of an ‘aw shucks’ thing about them because of all the bad breaks, but really they are no better or no worse than the yankees, but the yanks were the ‘evil empire’ so someone had to smite them.
Personally, while my gf is from boston and a red sox fan (but a sixers fan now that she watches basketball), i’m kind of tired of red sox nation cause it’s not cute any more it’s just irritating.
I mean seriousliy, how bad of a city is boston that everyone leaves?:)

I will admit that I rooted for Boston in ‘04…but then a few things happened:
1. Their fanbase turned into this insufferable band of fair-weather yuppies who seem to show up out of the woodworks wherever you go.
2. Boston teams have continued to dominate in the 3 major sports, further enabling the aforementioned band of roaming assholes.
im rotin for the phils with u guys
or anyone who plays the sox

Reminds me of those shirts when i was a kid
I root for two teams:
Temple and who ever is playing Villanova.

Angels
are my wife’s favorite team. She adores Mike Scioscia with the sort of simple, fervent feeling kids have for Santa Claus.
good
sciocsia plays nl ball, but a far cry from the phil’s style huh? :)

i hate pedroia…all of his hits are these little “duck farts” as Swindle would say…he never seems to make good contact.
He’s a fine player, i hate red sox games cause they remind me how dumb ed wade was
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions
yes, but it wasn’t just some of their guys
it was youkilis – 3rd baseman set for a while – greek god of walks
shoppach – who at the time was a better prospect than any phils catcher
and one other – i forget who
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Shoppach is the only one I remember clearly. Youk was in some of the rumors… as was Hanley Ramirez. Now there’s a thought, huh?
i believe at least youk and shoppach were confirmed, i think ramirez was part of it but then i’m told he wasn’t.
An infield set at every position for a long while with howard, utley, rollins, and youkilis and moving ramirez to outfield (could he play right?)....holy crap
thus, ed wade is a miserable idjit who should be booed every time the astros play the phillis

Howard AGAIN!!!!
Hey Daj…what do you think? Could this be the spring training Howard that we were raving about?
Something like “you can have a milkshake ‘n’ cheese fries diet, or you can have sustained excellence in the big leagues, but not both.”
Ah, so a shot at howards body size/weight which is roughly the same size it’s always been?
You know, a brick outhouse, kind of like jim thomes?
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s a cheap one whatever, howard has always basicall been the same size, colon let himself turn into a giant turd worthy of jose mesa
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I am not a nutritionist, but perhaps Howard’s body type is not the kind to age gracefully if he doesn’t watch his intake.
This is a legitimate question cause i’ve never read anything about it, is there press/articles at there talking about ryan howards every day diet?
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions
good one. I’ve seen recently Utley (chicken, fruit, water) and remember a chatter about Myers’ diet (cheesesteaks). From tv shots of his family in STL over the weekend I don’t believe he grew up in a cardiac-sensitive diet.
by Wet Luzinski on Jun 16, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Really more a shot at Colon’s than Howard’s. (Hence “cautionary tale.”)
Ryan is fine now, I agree with you. (I saw the steal yesterday and everything…) I do worry a little that he might backslide as he ages.
Sounds good to me
DOn’t listen to me, i just realize i’m signed up for 3 full online courses this summer in addition to my usual 50-60 hours of work a week, that might not have been a smart idea.

what’s with the bottom of the red sox order cole?
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:12 PM EDT reply actions
game situ update, please? Radio/tv free and internet blocked (hence my appreciation for site name which to date has flown under our IT goon radar).
Sure. It’s 4-1 in the top of the 5th. Howard has two HR, Pedroia just homered for Boston, awakening their obnoxious fans in OFJOAB.
If red sox fans out number philadelphia sports fans at tonights game i’ll be very irritated

4-1 phils, top of the fifth
Howard 2 hrs, Rollins 1 hr, all runs on home runs.

Gotta disagree here. If Utley can do it successfully ~45% of the time, it’s worth it. Especially leading off the inning, when a single is worth a lot more.

How is this an argument against bunting for a hit?
by christonabike on Jun 16, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
how often does chase utley bunt successfully for a hit, or bunt at all?
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know how to look that up, however, I specifically said it’s only worth it if he can do it ~45% of the time. That’s a rough estimate and would vary depending on the number of outs.
Utley is a smart guy and knows his skills. I don’t think he would be bunting if he didn’t think he could do it successfully a decent amount of the time.
by christonabike on Jun 16, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
45% of the time successfully bunting for a single.
Does anyone successfully do othat over a susainted period of time Somehow I doubt it or said person would try to bunt for a hit much more often.
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions
No, of course no player can sustain a successful bunting percentage that high. That’s because defenses will adjust and start playing their 3rd baseman in. With where Lowell was playing when Utley was up, I have no doubt that there are a plethora of players who can bunt successfully 50% of the time—the question is whether Utley is one of them.
This also brings up another benefit of Utley bunting. It keeps the defense honest, which should lead to more future hits.

Feliz K/BB is ~1.25. His previous low was 2.5.

If jimmy rollins gets rmoved for not running out a routine fly, shouldn’t geoff jenking get removed for not taking ONE PITCH from a guy who walks a lot of people?

WIth a big lead, hamels might want to consider ploinking pedroia :)

While I can’t say I’m surprised, I have to agree that pitching Hamels here is beyond stupid. There’s only risk and no reward.
He is a 300 hitter coming into tonight, maybe let him hit and then sit him – don’t waste the pinch hitter :)

When and how did Okajima break?
And Manny bats second, and he’ll have a chance to tie the game i believe if ESPN is right :)

Yes, yes she is, she’s on the couch with me right now, but she doesn’t know how he broke.

The WPSG coverage of the game keeps showing this shot of Moyer, Kendrick, Eaton, and Hamels chatting it up in the dugout and Myers is nowhere to be seen. I have to wonder whether this is conscious on the part of these guys (not wanting to be near the sad sack of manure that Myers is) or Myers is just hanging out elsewhere.
To be fair, Myers is normally up on the steps watching the game
by wehatetolose on Jun 16, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, probably right. But I like to think that these team of good people treats Myers the way he deserves to be treated as a despicable human being.
Eh, I like Brett. It’s a shame that his control isn’t there right now, but when he’s on, he’s really dominant. He just needs some confidence and consistency. He’s one of those guys that needs consistent counseling as well.
by wehatetolose on Jun 16, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
No but seriously, not to start the debate again, but I was very happy to have Durbin in there. He was calm. Made a great pitch to one of the best hitters in the game to get a double play and then gets a pop up to end the inning. Really good work from him.
Seriously, someone, anyone, explain to me why ANYONE but teen age girls should be the target demographic of the fracking jonas brothers?
by jemagee on Jun 16, 2008 9:34 PM EDT reply actions
I disagree. The majority of teenage girls have ears and thus cannot be the target demographic of the Jonas brothers. Deaf teenage girls, perhaps?
