June 24: Moyer vs. Blanton

Philadelphia Phillies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 24, 2008 10:05 PM EDT

The alt-universe rivalry series kicks off in Oakland tonight, as the once-Philadelphia A's host the Phils. For the city's current baseball representation, historical curiosity isn't as pressing a concern as just getting a damn win and recovering a little momentum in a suddenly-tight NL East race. They turn to Jamie Moyer, himself a longtime denizen of the AL West, to end the slide. Moyer's lifetime numbers against the A's aren't great (17-15, 4.46), but not many current Athletics have seen him much--just infielders Mark Ellis, Bobby Crosby and Eric Chavez, I think. Not that many Phillies have seen much of A's starter Joe Blanton either, but Moyer seems to gain a particular advantage from hitters' unfamiliarity with his repertoire of slow and slower, but precisely located, pitches. Here's hoping.

Well, an inning and a half of this and I’m ready to trade this whole suck-ass lineup for dogfood.

Driving in runs

Can anybody remember the last time the lineup had two on, less than two outs and scored?

Burrell homers! 1-0.

Despite the homer, we still suck.

It’s actually almost funny how awful this offense is right now.

Jenkins just did the same thing in the Phils 7th-first-pitch skyout to left with guys on first and second-that he did in screwing up the second inning on Sunday.

After squandering a bases-loaded chance in the top of the 7th, Manuel effed up the management of the game (leaving a tiring 45 year-old Moyer in to give up the inevitable three-run homer) in the bottom of the 7th… and the Phils are now losing. Which we fully deserve.

Unfuckingbelieveable. Great chance to add a win after Mets, Braves and Fish lose earlier, but the punchless sucky Phillies score their usual 2 runs. Gotta bash Charlie for sticking with Jenkins, Ruiz and Happy Pete. Time for a lineup change and maybe a team ass chewing. Pathetic.

I’m convinced that on Jenkins’ last AB-his third strikeout of the night, I think-his thought process went something like You guys think I suck? I’m gonna show you assholes the true meaning of suck!

At what point will Gillick admit that he made a mistake with Taguchi, Jenkins, and Feliz? I realize that with the latter two, their multi-year contracts make releasing them unrealistic, but Taguchi should have been designated for assignment a long time ago.

Hopefully Gillick can latch Jenkins and/or Feliz onto some trade he makes by the deadline. I supported the Jenkins signing when it happened but they and I were clearly too optimistic about what he had left in the tank.

Feliz?

Yeah, he’s not good, but he’s been exactly the player he was in SF, if not a little better. That constitutes an improvement over last year.

You know what kills me ‘bout old Charlie is he uses Jenkins as the DH when he is 2 for his last 37. Screw the L-R and R-L platoon with Werth, just play Werth. Any pitcher knows by now the way to get Jenkins out is the 60 foot curve in the dirt. Amazing, he just can’t lay off it.

As for so-so So (I stole that from Conlin) it’s time to cut bait. For the too few chances with the glove there has been too many gaffs. As for the PH the Phils saw in St Louis…well that was last year, I think he’s O’fer 13 here.

Feliz, well he actually surprizes me at times, like when he takes a BB. Seriously he is what he is and his glove has saved us some runs.

Ruiz. I won’t get started. Major major sophmore slump.

I was under the impression Feliz was brought in for his glove, which based on the games I’ve seen + casual glancing at fielding stats vs. league avg., he’s done. Anything he brings to the plate is a bonus.

In a perfect world, he’d be the go-to late innings defensive replacement bench guy, I suppose…Is there anyone in the minors that’s expected to take 3B next year?

Probably not next year. They have a couple middle infielders at AA and A+ who might merit a shot at third, but likely not till 2010.

In any event, Feliz is far from the biggest problem with the Phillies. When the rest of the lineup hits, he’s perfectly adequate.
