Did the Phils steal signs against the Sox?
Boston.com says one major league official thinks so
Major League Baseball has not received a specific complaint about the Red Sox being victims of sign stealing, but the Phillies have been investigated for this in the past. The Sox played the Phillies last week, and one major league official thought the Phillies were taking Boston's signs. The Sox won two out of three in Philadelphia. Sox general manager Theo Epstein had no comment on the topic
If the Phils were stealing signs, they certainly didn't do it very effectively considering the outcome of that series...

Anyone know anything about this line: “the Phillies have been investigated for this in the past.”

The thing that bothers me about that phrase is that there’s no time frame… I’m sure every team has been investigated for stealing signs at least once in the 100+ years of baseball. So for me to say “Every team in MLB has been investigated for this in the past” is 100% true. If something happened 50 years ago, who cares. However, I’m sure there’s nothing significant here.

Not only no time frame
Not only no time frame, but no context. And just throwing an aside in like that is completely irresponsible as it leaves readers to wildly speculate. Isn’t the point of a reporter to inform not to leave readers to invent information on their own?

True
As far as I can tell, most sports reporters take the following as their core mission: to show that they’re in the know and we aren’t.

I assume they mean that they think the Phils did it with electronic equipment, because stealing signs on the field is fair game.

Right, it’s more poor sportsmanship than it is illegal…
