Gamethread: Phils @ A's, 6/26/08

Philadelphia Phillies at Oakland Athletics, Jun 26, 2008 3:35 PM EDT

The losing streak is over and the division lead is back up to two games, but it's not clear the Philllies are out of the woods quite yet. Last night's reconfigured lineup scored four runs, the team's best in a week, but also left 11 men on base and went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position (and one of those hits resulted in an inning-ending out at home plate). Today they try to improve that performance against Rich Harden, who would be Oakland's undisputed ace were he able to stay healthy for more than a few months at a time. Adam Eaton goes for the Phillies, under renewed pressure to perform after Kyle Kendrick's superb effort on Wednesday.

The Rays

Did us a favor by sweeping the Fish. They are an exciting team right now. Wow.

Eaton…kinda…sucks…kinda

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

I’m about to leave the office to go home and watch this. Now I’m worried it’ll 12-0 before I even turn it on…

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

now why would you ruin a perfectly good evening like that?

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

At this rate Condrey will be in by the third so hurry home.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

why the switch in CF for the A’s?

by Bilzo on Jun 26, 2008 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

Sweeney got hurt sliding home. Think his hand.

Perfect game, no hitter, perfect game, shutout, no hitter, shutout…

there, lets hope that jinxes him!

Our Feared DH

That’s right Geoff Jenkins ! He of the 2 for his last 38. Gag me with a fucking spoon for having this clown on the team.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

like I said…I wish his parents would have just used some form of contraceptive on that fateful night.

Edit Edit Edit

2/39 and add another K. Say Jonk as an aside how much can I swear before getting 86’d. I have to unload on Jenkins.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

We do need to figure out the swearing policy at some point.

Personally, my tolerance for it is higher with Jenkins than pretty much anyone else in the organization, save maybe Bill Giles.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t worry, the Phillies are just saving their hits up to use them all in one inning.

by christonabike on Jun 26, 2008 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

tick, tick, tick, tick, tick…you hear that?

that’s the sound of Adam “the time bomb” Eaton waiting to completely explode.

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent post. Yes I hear the ticking too.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Tip O the Hat to Eaton, took alot of pitches to Chavez and Crosby but he escaped.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

You forget

He’s pitching against the akland Athletics…that’s right, we don’t got no “O”.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, no I don’t. Every single time Eaton pitches, there are a million comments repeating the same jokes over and over again. But he’s now had five decent starts in his last six, maybe six of his last seven if he can hold up for another inning or two today, and after a while the jokes get old.

by taco pal on Jun 26, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

2 for 40 Jesus Christ Charlie shoot him, WTF are you playing him for?

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Oh that’s right, silly me, Harden is a RH pitcher. So ‘The Book’ sez…... yeah I know.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Ol’ One-Pitch Super-Suck kills my happy buzz after Eaton’s great escape.

I know there’s no way they just cut Jenkins-he’s owed too much money-but cant we fake an injury or something? Or inflict one?

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Have Gillick pick a fight with him…wink…wink.

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Say I wonder if Wade is a little sore today. I couldn’t believe Chacon, Man what an idiot.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, as a person who has fantasized about kicking the asses of numerous bosses, a little part of me is actually clapping for Chacon.

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t have to wonder why the Brewer’s didn’t renew his option.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing is, his numbers were ok last year. Did he really get old that quick? He certainly looks like he has no idea what he’s doing at the plate, but there’s got to be more to the story than that.

by taco pal on Jun 26, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Jim-Me

3 K’s so far today. Hum, ya think maybe he’s pressing for the folks back home?

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think it’s more like Harden’s untouchable right now. But there’s probably a little added self-applied pressure.

Crap. Homer makes it 3-0. Not that I think they need more than 1.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s fantastic. Been years since I’ve seen him pitch… I read your Beane interview; the “DON’T JINX RICH’S HEALTH” interlude was a riot.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

The look he gave me when I said that

was even funnier in person. I wish I could’ve taken a photo at that moment.

The amazing thing about Harden is that he mostly just threw two pitches for his first 5-7 starts. He’s just recently begun throwing his split again.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright, this is downright atrocious.

A part of me hopes that we don’t even make the playoffs. I would hate to see another series like the one against the Rockies last year where the offense disappeared against stiff competition. I really think these last few series against good AL teams are foreshadowing.

by FuquaManuel on Jun 26, 2008 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

Wheeler seems to be pretty excited that the Phils will face Padilla this weekend.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t particularly mind losing to a guy like Harden when he’s at the top of his game, as he is today.

I do mind that Eaton has now guaranteed that we’ll have had a stretch of quality starts (including Myers’ which he blew in the 8th) through the entire rotation, and we figure to go 1-4 in those games. Kind of blows my whole theory of the Phillies… frickin’ interleague play, perhaps.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Or perhaps that should have been “RALLY CAPS?” Har har.

by taco pal on Jun 26, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Man you guys have a gem with Kalas

Most of the time I mute the opposition announcers, but he’s just a treat to listen to.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

I thought Harry really struggled the last two nights – which is understandable for a 72-year-old man whose body thinks it’s 2 in the morning. He has his good days and he has his bad days, but I’d still take him over most of the competition.

by taco pal on Jun 26, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Trust me

I’ve heard most of the other guys who broadcast and most of them couldn’t hold Kalas’ tube socks, never mind his microphone.

I happen to live in So Cal where the Angels have the worst two announcers in all of baseball in Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler. Course Hawk Harrelson is a close second.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 26, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I believe it. I guess we all just have a distorted picture because we remember how good Harry was at his peak. Sorta like how Michael Jordan used to get criticized during his stint with the Wizards, even though he was still a very good player.

by taco pal on Jun 26, 2008 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

truth

I was pleasantly surprised to hear the Phils announcers-at least Harry and Sarge; Wheeler is annoying and McCarthy is an abomination-for the road game. Why wasn’t this game televised in Oakland? A’s crew mentioned it last night.

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Jenkins

2 for 41 but hey who’s counting.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

Flash

I love the guy but….........

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Alan Embree… another guy it’s hard to believe hasn’t yet been a Phillie. Of course, he’s not done yet…

by dajafi on Jun 26, 2008 5:44 PM EDT reply actions

A triple for Pat, hey that’s two this year for the fleet footed guy. Cool.

by Steve-O- on Jun 26, 2008 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

Later fellas Harden proves the point good pitching beats shitty hitting. Er I thinks that the way the saying goes.
