Sick and tired...

I am so tired of the Phillies drafting unproven high school talent.  Hewwitt is a waste of a pick.  I am pretty sure we could have gotten him in the 2nd or 3rd round.  maybe not 3rd but we can get him later.  Also players we passed on that i know are better than our first 2 picks, are Tim Murphy from UCLA and Tanner Scheppers from Fresno.  They also passed on Gerrit Cole, and I know he is a HS guy but he also throws 97.  I understand staying away from Cole.  He is a Boris guy and looking for top 5 money and has no problem going to college.  I was sitting with him at the Fullerton regional last weekend and he seems like he is ready for school, and enrolled in orientation.  However, for Murphy and Scheppers, i dont get it.  There are others like Tyson Ross from Cal and i am tired of the Phillies drafting philosophy.  It does not work and out farm system is garbage right now because of it.  They need to change their philosophy.  Thoughts?

I’m of two minds here. On the one hand, I share your annoyance at the organizational habit of drafting tools guys who don’t show much in the way of baseball skills… particularly since the Phils as an organization don’t seem to be very good at teaching those skills. The Collier pick makes sense because the guy is 17 and has played against quality opposition and held his own, so he’s both shown he can do it and has the time to develop. But Hewitt is 19, has struggled against better competition and might not come cheap; why pick him in the first round?

The other argument, though, is that we often blast the team for being overly risk-averse. (Less since Gillick replaced Wade, but still.) Can’t accuse them of that here. If you’re going to put down $1.5 million or so on a bet, it’s a defensible position to do that on a longshot-superstar rather than a decent-shot #4 starter or so-so regular type.

I was a little frustrated by day one, but greatly encouraged on day two. Now, I understand that we have to get the job done in regards to signing all of these HS kids, which I know we won’t sign them all, but even the majority would provide a great influx of talent. I was discouraged by the Hewiit pick, I really thought there were other avenues we could have gone with. However, I have a hard time arguing with many of their other picks. In general, I favor a high-ceiling HS kid to a middling reserve college guy. Finally, I am not sure where I read this from, but it explains a bit of why the Phillies draft the way that they do. I believe it was either Wolever or Arbuckle who said something along the lines of you don’t win championships with ok players, you win championships with great players, and so that is who they try and draft. Now, the Phillies have taken their share of low-ceiling slot guys, or 5th year seniors or what not, but they also take many high-ceiling toolsheds or high-ceiling injury concerns.

Our farm system

Actually, it’s not in bad shape. It has 3 really great spects: Carrasco, Cardenas, and Golson, and a few okay spects: Outman, Savery, Drabek.

Plus, no way that Hewitt would have made it past Supp Round 1. Check out some of the mock drafts. He’s not a great pick, but he does have the highest ceiling, and we don’t really need any help at the MLB level right now except at the SP level, which didn’t have a ton of talent to offer at that point (that would be called up ahead of Carrasco/Outman/Etc)

Not a great draft, but I sort of see their logic. If they hit on Hewitt or Collier… Those are game-breaker potential kinda players.

No way is Golson a great prospect

He’s finally this year reclaimed actual prospect status, but his K:BB rate is still scary. Unless he can make major strides in strike zone discipline, he looks like a future platoon player to me.

On the other hand, you omitted Marson from your list, and he’s making a case for being considered the Phillies top overall prospect.

I think Happ could come in and even make out as a #3.

For Who? My teammates.

For What? To Win.

How Much? Where do I sign?
