7/12/08: Eaton Unit
Arizona Diamondbacks at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 12, 2008 3:55 PM EDT
I'll be in broadcast darkness for this one, thanks to FOX. The upside is that you all in Philly have to contend with Mark Grace. My sympathies.
With Randy Johnson starting today, Chase Utley gets a seat. Howard--who has never previously faced the Unit--is in the lineup in his accustomed spot.

Really, it would be hard to overstate how much Eaton sucks.
Two outs in the fourth.
He gives up a single to the #7 hitter.
Then walks the #8 hitter-batting .171-on four pitches.
Randy Johnson’s up, Eaton gets ahead 1-2, count goes even, Johnson fouls off three pitches, count goes full…
And Eaton lays in a meatball over the dead center of the plate, with Johnson-batting .095 before this encounter-rips down the line for a two-run double. They’re losing again.
Now a four-pitch walk to Drew.
And another extra-base hit. 5-2.
Also, that was Johnson’s first XBH in four years.
It’s kind of entertaining to listen to Larry Anderson, getting increasingly enraged at Eaton’s performance.
Do you know how close the Phils are to doing something about Eaton. If Myers gets sent down for sucking on a similar level, why doesn’t Eaton get the same treatment? Plain and simple he should not be pitching on a major league team.
p.s, Swindle gives up another hit to a lefty.
Let’s think of it this way.
Hamels, Moyer and Kendrick are assured. Myers is coming back.
Happ and Carrasco are close or there.
Another guy might be coming in a trade.
Any of these are upgrades. My guess is that this disgrace today closes the book on Eaton’s tenure as a regular starter for the Phils.
Also, I’m out of here as well. Hoping for something good tomorrow.
it’s time for both to go. Swindle just doesn;’ have what it takes for the majors. It was nice of them to give him a chance, but I think the experiment should be over.
In terms of Eaton, they need to bite the bullet and flat out release him. He has no value and I’m pretty sure they couldn’t assign him without his consent (which I doubt he would provide).

I think 5 innings, no matter how terrible, is a little too small of a sample size to write off a 25 year old pitcher.

sorry, with his style I just don’t see it coming together. I hope I’m wrong.

Late to the game in this thread, I am, but I must say that it was the biggest waste of 75 bucks I have had in years – although the cheesesteak I had prior to the game was worth the drive.
I have to agree with some of the above comments, Eaton is finished as a starter….he has to be – he is an embarrasment to the team. That AB of Randy Johnson looked even worse in person. My father was absolutely apoplectic and catatonic after that AB, something that doesn’t normally happen to him, considering that he has been a Phillies fan for nearly 50 years.
Sorry you had to endure that in person. I was at the Eaton start where he gave up the slam to Barajas, terrible terrible experience.
I think all of us fans who have endured Eaton’s horribleness need to form some kind of support group…

What baffles me about Eaton is how he could’ve possibly fooled any team into giving him $24 million dollars. I’m no scout, but even when he results are decent (through luck or the other team’s offensive incompetence), I can tell his stuff is piss poor and his command of it and feel for pitching is worse. If the Phillies cut him (which they absolutely, unequivocally should), I wonder if any team would bother to bring him on for the minimum.
Convince me he's done
I can’t bring myself to believe the Phils would just cut him, not when they owe him for another year and a half.
Tell you what though—he’s one guy I’m not worried about turning into Cy if he goes elsewhere. He’s never been good.
I don’t really believe it either, but my inner cynic says otherwise. Guess it is just an effect of being a Phillie fan.
