Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Jul 22, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Not much more need be said, huh? Tonight marks the first of nine remaining regular season meetings between the Phillies and Mets, and the team that wins the bulk of them has a big leg up toward claiming the NL East as well. New York sends their ace Johan Santana to the mound; the Phils counter with new addition Joe Blanton. Both guys have very, very good numbers against the opponent, albeit in limited exposure.

Hi, A's fan here, came over to watch Blanton pitch
I hope y’all continue our nickname for him: Cupcakes
LOL... Cookies works
I’m not really sure if there’s an actual reason behind Cupcakes, but it IS fun to yell “Cuppa-Cuppa-Cakes!” at the TV.
I’ve now seen Blanton one time through the Mets lineup—I turned it on when he was facing Castro in the 2nd.
He didn’t look good in that last inning, but to be fair Wright’s great and Delgado is as hot right now as Howard was before the break.
Blanton is an XXXL Kyle Kendrick: slightly better than fringy stuff, “knows how to pitch,” and doesn’t have that one really plus offering that would make him great. I suspect he’ll win some games for us, but he’s not a difference maker. In other words, much as advertised.
That sounds about right. His command hasn’t been as advertised, though I’m sure that can be down to nerves in making his first start for a new club.
And I hate to complain about umps, but Delgado went around on that 0-2 pitch before his homer. Replays showed it and even the annoying SNY team admitted as much. They won’t get every call right, but man, that hurts.
it's off. or it should be.
I’m completely miserable watching this, and my wife is angry at me because I’m miserable. What’s the point again?
It’s only a game, it’s only a game, it’s only a game, it’s only a game

Nice to see as I get home that ramon castro tatoos one off the bat of joe blanton – to make it 5-1
Excellent

Joe Blanton: Different sh*t, same stink.

Joe Blanton isn’t as fat as jose mesa yet though, right?

Coste demonstrates AWESOME patience…
Didn’t this team used to have, you know, organizational patience? Where the hell did that go?
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions
Coste’s heroic journey is complete; I’m afraid he’s now basically the lousy player the so-called experts prematurely pegged him as.
He swung at the first two pitches of the at bat and at least one of them was outside enough he had to reach for it.
Sigh…and the sixers might trade my favorite player, this is not a good day for me

A reliable ‘inside source’ on realgm indicates that the sixers and andre iguodala have a problem, he wants a max contract, they don’t want to give it to him so they are exploring sign and trade options, such wonderful names as Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter are making the rounds, making me vomit because at that point i might have to become a clippers fan…of the three, i’d rather have iguodala making max money…iguodala and speights are the two guys in my life i picked out in around february before the draft and said ‘i really think the sixers should draft him’...id’ be peeved if they traded him for aging under achieving over paid shadows of themslves
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Wouldn't they have to pay
T-Mac or Vince more than they would offer Andre? Granted he probably wants more years then they both have left on there current contract.
1. Guys like evans and or willie green would have to be massaged in to make it work…iguodala is also a BYC player which makes it more complicated
2. I like ed too, but if he gets t-mac or carter i’m not sure what i’d do, it’d be like an ed wade trade but a lot worse
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions
BYC would depend on what he signed for ... right
but chances are if they sign and trade they will be over the cap so it would apply. I don’t see the sense in trading your franchise player.
The sixers are already capped out because of iguodala and williams cap hold, whatever he signs for makes him a BYC as I understand it, the NBA CBA sucks in different ways for the NFLs but it still sucks
The argument is that Andre Iguodala isn’t a frnachise player, he’s a very good complimentary player, but not the focus of a team (and I agree, but i think he has more value than tracy mcgrady and or vince carter)...i think between the three the sixers would be ASININE to give up iguodala, just give him a shorter deal….like 3 years plus an option like the other big names got…if they blow this, for me it eliminates all the brand good will

Oh
I in no way think he is a franchise player but he is the Sixers franchise player … I mean who else is there?
Elton Brand
Thaddeus Young will be an all star some day
and so will Speights
Fans didn’t show up for playoff games last year, fans are dismissing iguodala after only 6 games against the pistons…if iguodala goes, fans will miss him, and deserve what they got for their lack of appreciation of what he brings in EVERY aspect of the game.
Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter can score, that’s about it
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah Brand is but I didn’t really count him since he hasn’t played a game in a sixers uni …. Thad will be a star but isn’t quite the face of the organization … yet.
If they get rid of Iggy they have to get a SG … just hopefully not someone in there 30s
Don’t forget that they have willie green.
And my hope for this off season as trading him, for like a hoagie, cause i know that mo cheeks can’t RESIST playing him and as far as i’m concerned all his minutes belong to louis williams
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed
I think the team is a SG away from being a true contender … I think Loooooouuuuuu could be a SG he is a creative scorer almost Iverson-esque I think he is more important to sign than Iggy.
I think you’re wrong for two reasons
Iguodala is a shooting guard, it seems people have forgotten the majority of his career
Louis Williams is barely the same height as allen iverson with a very iverson like game right now, if he doesn’t learn how to play opint guard, he’s a bench guy, he’s just a better bench guy than willie green, but than again, you are probably a better bench guy than willie green

Delgado went around clearly ...
even the mets fans agree … but he didn’t argue it until Delgado hit one out of the park so it was clearly to try and get the team fired up … and agreed it didn’t work.
I find the whole ‘fired up thing’ tiresome…as much as I find the praise that jerry manuel will inevtiably get for turning the mets around tiresome too…seriously, if the players aren’t fired up for a series against the mets in july when they are tied for first, i’m not 100% sure what the hell is going to get them ‘fired up’...and if fired up means emotional, why do you want your guys playing overly emotional cause when you are overly emotional you do stupid things like what jayson werth just did
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions
its seems talking about the sixers ...
gets them fired up … but I agree if you aren’t ready to go against the mets in shea in july tied for first I don’t want you on my team.
It’s good that the mets bullpen isn’t good.
But alas, i have no faith
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 9:49 PM EDT reply actions
probably didn't want to use him with a 3 run lead.
back spasms or something … unless they are downplaying something more serious.
Well now it’s a 2 run lead and no outs and bases still loaded and still not using him…

You know, thank god blanton pitched well enough to keep the phils in the game right?
And Brad Lidge will come into close the game…holy crap

As herenandez said, at some point taguchi had to break his 0for slump….
why the HELL did utley swing at the first pitch?
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions
Are you fracking KIDDING me….Utley and Howard BOTH swung at the first pitch and are only saved by the error on feliciano.
by jemagee on Jul 22, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions
Chavez, Wright, Beltran due up for the Mets.
Lidge won’t have it easy. But damn, who even woulda thought that they’d have a chance?
Nice third run. Whew.
The mets inability to play the field properly also immensely helpful
JFC STOP SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH

I don't know
but I wanted to wait for the win before I said this … I popped over to the Mets site and the thread is pretty funny to read … basically the opposite of ours.
that post is useless without pics, or links, i like to watch mets fans meltdowns
