Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Jul 24, 2008 12:10 PM EDT
After waiting all day and evening for the rain yesterday, they got the game in (and yours truly saw the Phils lose his first in-person viewing of the team since '06). After heavy rain all morning here in Brooklyn, it looks like they're going to play this one today as well. The Phillies could use a win for their first series victory over the Mets in four tries this season; that it would keep them in first place is nice but not really the point. The Mets are clearly the biggest threat, and the Phils have to show they're equal to it. Solving Oliver Perez, the wild but effective lefty, would be another plus: he's thrown 18 scoreless innings against the Phillies in three starts this season.

good start for Moyer… three up; three down… 2 Ks

Hernandez just mentioned that in 17 career starts against the Mets, Moyer hasn’t gone less than 6 innings. Awesome stat; hope he didn’t black-cat the old guy.

Very true. It’s pretty interesting that it seems that two teams that Moyer pitches extremely well against both happen to be in our division… NY and the Marlins…

how does he look? i’m following on espn game cast online… stupid work gets in the way of everything…

Has the broadcast team given anything on why rollins is scratched, the yahoo/ap article is amazingly uninformative about why

dunno… following online… maybe just a day off after the night game?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 12:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he was listed as the starter and then scratched, which leads me to believe it might not just be a day off

Terrible AB by Feliz in the second. The refusal to take walks probably explains why Perez, with his 4-plus ERA, is working on a streak of 20 scoreless innings against the “good” Phillies offense.

Pedro Feliz has diseased the entire line up this year, I’m convinced
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, first “good” is a relative term right now… but yes… Perez will hurt himself if you let him… they need to take pitches

I’ll tell you what… Alot of people seem to be waiting for Jamie Moyer to crash back to Earth, but I’m not so sure that’s going to happen. It’s a given that he’s not going to go out and throw complete game shutouts and such, and we all know I drive faster on the turnpike than his fastball, but the man knows how to pitch. Also, atleast you know what you’re going to get out of him… For the most part, 6 – 7 innings and 2 to 4 runs. I’d much rather have him out there than Eaton, Myers or Kendrick… I hope we bring him back, even if it’s just a year with an additional club option year… Perhaps he could just migrate over to the pitching coach’s role when he’s done… I can’t stand Dubee, Dubbe, Doooo

Dajafi – you still in NY or are you watching the game on TV?

didn’t realize that… born and raised? Rollins news on the telecast?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I grew up in Philly. Lived in NYC most of the last 13 years. For some stupid, self-defeating reason, I can’t cut the cord when it comes to the sports teams.

I think we’ve had the lead for what… six outs in this whole series?

What’s oliver perez career high for K’s in a game?
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
not sure but he’s going to have a shot at it today i think… lots of K’s looking… are they close? are they strikes?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not rational about this-I love Moyer and detest Perez-but it seems like a lot more of the close calls have gone against the Phils thus far.
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
seems like that’s been the case this whole series…

im stuck working in the bronx without my mlb audio – damn black out rules!

This is really to your advantage, unless you like hearing Mets announcers verbally fellating Oliver Perez.

Where was that second strike on Coste? According to GameCast, he needed a nine iron.
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Coste honestly is worse than Ruiz right now.
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Any reports on how close Sweet Lou is?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m sure that they won’t call him up, considering the relative success of the pitchers with Ruiz and Coste. We’re stuck with these two weak bats the rest of the year.

I mean for next year… If I have to deal with these two asshats again, I’m going to drink some Drain-O…

Honestly, I wouldn’t be against Utley bunting Bruntlett over here…
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Infuriating
I’m watching the feed, not live action… but…
Leadoff double.
Utley hits ball to left side of infield (bad) but still manages to move the runner.
Burrell flies out to short left I guess, as no attempt to score.
Howard fans for third time today.
Situational hitting on this team is horrific.
by Bilzo on Jul 24, 2008 1:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Utlet grounded out to second… but you’re point is relevant either way… I think you can take it a step further right now and say hitting on this team is horrific right now… everyone except Burrell… and I never thought I would say that… What more do they expect from Moyer? And they can’t even score a fucking run against Oliver Perez??!
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Burrell’s AB was the worst in that sequence. The pitch he popped up was high and outside, not an offering you can do anything with.
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Didn’t see it here… I just meant over the past few weeks in general… Pat’s the one pretty much carrying the team
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps the Werth/Jenkins combo will be better in the second half.
Whats wrong with Utley?
by Bilzo on Jul 24, 2008 1:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well the Jenkins half can’t get any worse… Besides the fact that he’s playing like shit? Dunno…
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is the mystery. Getting him going again will be the key to the last 60 games.
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BOttom of the 7th
This is where Moyer usually starts to deteriorate if he’s going well.
Hopefully Beltran can get himself out, Tatis remebers he’s Tatis, and Easley does what he does.
The Mets are getting production from their role players lately. The phillies aren’t getting any from anybody not named Pat Burrell or Shave Victorino.
by Bilzo on Jul 24, 2008 1:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
glad we are back in this game, but this lack of situational hitting is getting to me
by pjnc2003 on Jul 24, 2008 1:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Werth with a scary catch to end the 7th.
Man, Moyer has been terrific today. I assume he’s done here. Rollins to PH, if he’s not hurt?
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 1:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If he’s announced in the starting line up and then scratched, is he available?
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then probabyl worrisome that taguchi was the pinch hitter then?
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So Taguchi sucks – even with that double
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Bruntlett is doing well in his place though…
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 1:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought Bruntlett had done it there.
God, Utley is just brutal right now. Looks like a bad-hitting pitcher up there.
by dajafi on Jul 24, 2008 2:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
12 Ks for Perez – ridiculous, we are padding his stats
by pjnc2003 on Jul 24, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
walking burrell to get to howard – please make them pay!!
by pjnc2003 on Jul 24, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Something’s gotta be wrong with Utley.
But then again – Perez is a wild lefty.
Utley’s season is looking eerily similar to Abreu’s before we traded him. And that was the HR Derby season I think.
Start off on a tear, hit dingers every day. Then look lost at the plate the rest of the year, especially against lefties.
I guess Bruntlett’s hit was off the top of the wall?
Chollie might be saving Rollins for a tighter spot.
by Bilzo on Jul 24, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The good thing
is that Bruntlett can’t PR for burrell today, and neither can Taguchi.
by Bilzo on Jul 24, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
howard taking one for the team to load the bases – come on werth!

here comes Jayson Werth… Our only offensive threat today
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 2:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs

Don’t know who I want hitting here.
Maybe Cole Hamles….

I left Werth on the bench on my fantasy team today. Hope thats a good omen.

shakes head
yeah, that definitely should have been the change there… did they have a lefty up in the pen as well though?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
wouldn't have mattered
Once a pitcher comes in – he has to face at least one batter.

Rollins is a switch hitter, seems like a perfect spot for him no?
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
if he’s not hurt… still no updates i guess…
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The lack of rollins in that inning makes me think he is hurt, but hopefully it’s minor…or he’s being punished
by jemagee on Jul 24, 2008 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I though maybe Heilman would be nervous, but once he started Werth with the strike, it was an uphill climb. Didn’t quite get it.
Here’s the moment of maximum peril.

Wow… they’re letting him run the bases?
by foos05 on Jul 24, 2008 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My friend (a Mets fan) and I were trying to figure this out at the game last night. He might be purely a pinch-hitter.

Lineout, right back to Romero. Phew. Great reaction play with the bat shattering.
IBB to Wright, Delgado vs. Romero for, well, probably the game.

I can’t believe Mr. Stay-Puft is still out there running bases as the go ahead run… did they let him such on the Oxygen after he made it to 2nd?

So what was Chollie saving Dobbs for?
So he could PH against Wagner, the Mets LH closer?
Did he forget Wagner is a lefty?

This team is seriously pathetic right now… Utley might has well go up there with a blind fold and use the Force…. Howard goes out there and puts on a Strike Out Bukake on a nightly basis… Rollins is a shadown of his MVP self… Myers and Eaton are useless piles of shit… Jury is still out on Blanton… Our catchers blow… Feliz likes swinging at everything he can…. Did I miss anything?
Patsie G. better get to GM and get this shitbox he calls a team back together… ARG!
