UNCLE!! Game Thread 7/25/08 ATL @ PHL
Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies return home to CBP for a three-game series versus their favorite divisional whipping boy of the season, the Atlanta Braves. The Braves, expected to contend this season, six five games under .500 at 58-63.
Tonight, Jair Jurrjens takes the hill for Atlanta, versus Kyle Kendrick, who's hoping to recover from his start in Florida earlier this week, one of the worst of his professional career.

Rollins first AB: 2 pitches, 1 out.
Say what you will about Feliz’s approach at the plate, but at times I wonder what the hell Rollins is thinking up there.

Closed-door meeting today with Manuel and the players. Only Charlie spoke.
Interesting.

I just put it on in the bottom of the 2nd, so saw KK for the first time in the 3rd. He looks a hell of a lot better than that awful last start.

McCann homers to lead off the 4th. Remember when we used to have leads?
Between this team and the absence of Harry Kalas, this really ain’t fun right now.

Utley
Has he ever gone through a stretch like this before? Seems like every at bat is a strikeout, a pop up or a grounder to second.
Was he shaken up by the All-Star reception and his miked profanity?

Utley
You’re right – just wondering if that whole All-Star trip screwed him up worse.

Of course, that is all assuming that Mike Hampton can get out of bed without injuring himself.

Kendrick
Do we take anything good out of his performance tonight? He’s been so inconsistent this year that it’s hard to get excited, but like Moyer yesterday he did pretty well with no run support.

sure we do, he did significantly better with 2 strikes on hitters and his pitches appeared to be much sharper than they were in his last clunker. I wouldn’t say he has been that inconsistent this year. He’s been a solid #4 or 5 starter on a team where he is actually a number 2 or 3 starter.

What FM said. He’s fine—not a dominant ace-type badass pitcher, but a guy who will give you decent-to-good starts probably three turns out of four.
We could have the 1995 Braves rotation out there these days and it wouldn’t much matter.

Based on regular appearances and performance, you’d have to say Kendrick’s our number 3 starter now. I guess by inconsistent I meant that these six-inning shutout or one-run games come up periodically and then you get the games like he had against Florida or Boston where he can’t get through five innings. Mostly he’s been good for around six innings and three runs, and that’s probably why the Phillies have won most of his starts.

Wow – that was a fast eight innings. Three, four baserunners. Mike Hampton must be chomping at the bit.

Well, the ninth is taking a lot longer. The bad part of it, unfortunately.

I think it’s time for a little reverse action. Usually the weekdays are fairly good and Saturday/Sunday suck. So, with this lousy week we really deserve two wins this weekend.

DOn’t know where else to post this – from espn
Casey Blake is likely to be moved between now and the deadline, and while the Mets' interest is serious, it is unclear whether the Indians can find a suitable deal with New York. The Rays are a serious player in the Blake talks, which also include the Phillies.

I made the drive up to Philly tonight from Baltimore with the crew in tow – my wife, brother, and cousin. I think I am embarrassed to be a Phillie fan right now. They are showing no heart, nothing. The Brad Lidge meltdown was even worse in person. I have been to 20-25 games while Ryan Howard has been on the team and this was the first homerun I have ever seen him hit in person – but you know what, that homer actually felt like salt in the wound.
It seems like they are so busy trying to fool us into thinking that they are a competitive team that they have really fooled themselves; lulled themselves even, and it is showing badly right now. I don’t know whether Cholly has lost the team or not (as certain WIP hosts were suggesting tonight), but the team is in a complete danger zone that will hit a point of no return very soon – and nights like these make me wonder if they haven’t already passed said point.
