Samuel Beckett Sez: Phils vs. Braves, 7/26/08

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 26, 2008 3:55 PM EDT

Everybody's waiting for something. For us, it's offense, of course.

And the Braves' long wait for Mike Hampton--who last took a big-league mound on August 19, 2005--is finally over. Perhaps he'll get back to his previous dominance of the Phillies: a 3.05 ERA in 168 career innings.

Popup, walk, 4-6-3 DP for Cole Hamels in the 1st.

Rollins thrown out trying to steal for the first time this season.

Phils with some early runs for a change: two-run single for Coste, triple for Victorino and a sac fly for Utley.

Three runs seems like a lot these days. With Cole pitching, it’s even arguably that in reality.

Tie game.

Fck them all. Fck this team, every single one of them.

by dajafi on Jul 26, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Now we’re losing. 6-3. They’ve batted around. Hamels has fallen apart completely.

It’s unreal. Why can’t I just turn it off?

I wasn't done

I kept playing online poker, and left it on…

And the Phils just scored SEVEN runs in the bottom of the fifth, and now they’re winning 10-9.

Not really much else to say. I’m totally stunned.

It is actually games like this that make the other games when they don’t come back and do something amazing so frustrating.

by PhoenixPhilly on Jul 26, 2008 6:11 PM EDT reply actions

This is the least of the frustrations, no?

I think this may be the quintessential Philadelphia sports fan blog comment.

I have so many questions about this game that I am not even gonna start asking them haha.

All I’ll say is that your boy Tom Gordon actually might have been useful in this one.

Dobbs pinch hit

dajafi – what did you think of Charlie’s decision to pinch hit Dobbs for Eaton?

I was against it, thinking we would want innings from Eaton.

by PhoenixPhilly on Jul 26, 2008 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

Braves have a lot of lefties, so you may as well have used him there.

And at that point it was already 9-7, so Eaton was likely not coming back out anyway.

by dajafi on Jul 26, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they are probably going to lose this one. The offense will come around and then the pitching will then fall apart and be unable to hold a lead.

I feel good about Lidge coming in to save it. I think last night was just one of those “I don’t know what to do if it’s not a save situation” nights.

So great to hear the call from Harry.

I am mortally sure that had it been that sonofabitch McCarthy calling the game, we wouldn’t have won it.

by dajafi on Jul 26, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think McCarthy is all that bad, to be honest.

by taco pal on Jul 26, 2008 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

What the…? First of all, I thought they had a night game today. And second… am I reading this box score correctly?

by taco pal on Jul 26, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Dear Phillies,

It is within the rules to score runs when you are not down 3+ runs.

Thanks,
Chewy

by chewy wellington on Jul 26, 2008 7:44 PM EDT reply actions

First time in more than a month that they have scored 10+ runs.

What a comeback...

Great game, what a comeback. I was really worried that with a big loss today Gillick might make in irrational trade that would destroy the future of this franchise. Now maybe all the blogs about trading Jimmy Rollins might chill out a little bit.
