Redding Alert: 7/30/08

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals, Jul 30, 2008 7:10 PM EDT

If history holds, tonight's Phillies-Nationals game will be even lower-scoring than last night's 2-1 result. The Phils have yet to dent Washington starter Tim Redding in 13 1/3 innings this year, stretched across two victories. (Redding's ERA against everyone else: 4.45.) He's 4-2, 2.34 in nine career starts against the Phils, though one of the losses was the NL East-clinching game last Sept. 30.

The Phils counter with Jamie Moyer, who has gone 3-0, 2.31 against the Nationals since they moved from Montreal in 2005. Meanwhile, no news on the trade front--which at this point I think is good news. I don't want to see any of our prospects shipped for a situational lefty, and Gillick has done some of his best trade work in August anyway.

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So nice to see, a little small ball mojo. As for shitstain Jenkins the DP ends the rally.

by Steve-O- on Jul 30, 2008 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

Willie harris scoffs at your small ball mojo :(

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

well that sucks

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

What I said about low-scoring? Um…

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

according to yahoo every ball was in the air?

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

On the bright side …. high-scoring games turn into wins a lot of times. Not that I’m not expecting Moyer to settle down and give us a half-decent outing.

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Moyer having one of those days?

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 7:42 PM EDT reply actions

Looked okay in the second.

Things I hate about mlb.tv: they’re showing the Nationals bubblehead sideline reporter interviewing Karen Moyer, occasionally cutting back to the game. There was a very close play at first with Shane; I think he was out, but I’m still not sure.

Yup, he was out.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

that’s not mlb.tv per se, that’s masn – or masn2 – their coverage blows

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

That mlb.tv sticks you with the awful local coverage, rather than letting me watch Harry whether they’re at home or away, is the gist of my complaint.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve gotten MORE comcast broadcasts on the extra innings package than normla this year, but the majority of phillies broadcasts are ‘opponent’ broadcasts, and that’s usually cause comcast sucks…i don’t know how it works on mlb.tv but this is an issue i’ve dealt with for years across two sports

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So they’ve gotten 2 runs off of Redding, chances that they get much of anything else from here on out? The 10 pitch innings aren’t encouraging.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

Can’t believe I missed seeing them score runs against Cy Redding in the first…

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

We don’t score runs much these days in general, I know. But even when we are scoring runs against other teams we don’t score runs against the Nats, its quite peculiar and I don’t get it.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

Actually, it was Jason Bergmann who lost the division-clinching game last Sept. 30. Redding lost the first game of that series, when Hamels threw a shutout.

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Damn. Thanks, I knew I should have looked that up ;)

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a nice change – I was getting tired of nothing but singles.

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

Now we’re talkin’.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

okay, what is going on here??!? :)

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Chase with an absolute bomb to dead center. 7-3.

Here are all the runs we’ve been missing in previous Redding starts…

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Redding: gone.

This makes me happy.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

Pedro Feliz injured offense picking up….coincicdence? I think not.

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

jem->Happy Pete as dajafi -> Jenkins

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, i’m still upset that youkilis isn’t our third baseman :)

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

jem-> Happy pete as dajafi -> Jenkins as FM -> Flash Gordon

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I say go easy on Flash, FM.

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, I don’t hate Flash the person with the same passion that Daj and jem hate their respective Phillies, but I hate when Flash appears in a game because of the digestive issues it gives me. I am sure his injury had alot to do with his ineffectiveness. But you would be lying if you said you didn’t get a bit nervous every time Gordon came into a close game in the 8th.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t hate Jenkins as a human being. He actually seems kind of cool—had a sense of humor about the Favre thing, etc.

Like jem w/r/t 3b, I hate him more as a symbol of the Phillies’ foolishness.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

gotcha. I have to admit, everytime I see Jenkins flailing at the first pitch low and away I think of Bobby Abreu and I cry.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think jemagee may actually hate Feliz the human being, so maybe that analogy breaks down.

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t have any opinions on feliz the human being, i’ve never met him, i hate the 3rd baseman pedro feliz…

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, you know, but I’m just sayin. When 40 years you reach, pitch as well you will not.

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

but will still get paid if your GM is an idiot

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

When 40 years old I reach and pitch at all I can I will consider this an accomplishment worthy of a multi-million dollar contract.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

more like jem->Happy Pete as Captain Ahab->Moby Dick

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

oh it’s deeper than that, it’s the hole at 3rd base the phillies have ignored since rolen left…feliz is just the third in the line of crap they have foisted upon the fans while not even coming CLOSE to developing a 3rd baseman and ignoring even potential candidates like Donald who they don’t think is ‘the right mold’ for a 3rd baseman….hell i wouldn’t be surprised to see little davey eckstein out there in a year or two

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Jenkins plays a Harris double into a triple.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

That was pretty cool. As was Moyer K’ing Belliard.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Great job by Moyer to record a QS after surrendering 3 first inning runs.

After the 1st inning Moyer only allowed 2 his and 3 walks.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

Moyer out, Madson in.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

Actually, with three lefties due, it might have been wise to try Happ here.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a bad idea – can you see if Happ is in the bullpen?

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

What the hell is Madson’s deal right now?

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

I believe the word is fungible?

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Madson looking bad.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t want to have to see Lidge tonight.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, that was my thought too. Bet we do, though.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate to keep riding the same horses, but Durbin sure has been valuable. Madson, maybe he needs an arm rest?

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No argument here. And while I still think it’s at least partly fluke, for one thing, maybe he’s an Aaron Fultz ‘05 where he does it all year, and for another, I’m still not convinced about Romero, and he’s done it for more than a year now…

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder about Romero at times, too, but if Lidge ever needs a day off I’d feel pretty good plugging Romero into the ninth inning.

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully this offensive explosion will exhaust the Nationals and they’ll get nothing tomorrow.

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

The double switch implies he plans 2 innings for madson?

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Only one starter is 0 for 4 tonight…

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh, 3-6 DP on Rollins, tagging Werth.

Really wanted that fourth run so Manuel wouldn’t use Lidge.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

Jimmy Rollins effing blows. Does it look worse for Rollins or the integrity of the MVP award that Shane Victorino has been a better baseball player than Jimmy this season?

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

Or maybe what it says is that rollins had a career last year and expecting him tto come close to repeating it is beyond irrational and insane and giving him grief for not repeating the same feat is just irrational and a need for hatred and over reaction?

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, 2 pitch at bats like that are unacceptable from a leadoff hitter whether he had a career year last year or not.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Calling his season and MVP award an embarassment because of one at bat is not something you really want people to take seriously is it?

The phillies as a TEAM have been less patient at the plate this year, top to bottom…and the reason is not jimmy rollins

it’s fracking pedro feliz

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

its not just one AB, Rollins has been doing this practically all season. His approach at the plate has been very Feliz-like.

by FuquaManuel on Jul 30, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He hit the ball hard on that DP. All you can ask.

Jimmy is coming around, I think. Though jem is right that ‘08 was a career year. Nothing wrong with that, and he’s still a stone cold steal on his contract—the best thing Wade ever did for us.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

haha, here we go. Lidge blown save numero uno.

Ye of little faith.

That isn’t exactly the Cubs over there, y’know.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Kendrick got a good look at what works against the Nationals – right now they’re about as weak a team offensively as we’ll see all year.

Seeing Gammons comments that the marlins might get ramirez and not have to pay any of his salary puts cold water on it for me…

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

John Lannan tomorrow, eh? Do the Nats have any pitchers that aren’t hate-inspiring?

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

How can you hate anyone on the nats (aside from paul lo duca) it’s such a pathetic franchise even with the new ownership (they have new ownership right) that’s more embarassing now than it EVER was in montreal…it’s in the perfect city though to show exactly NOT how to run something

by jemagee on Jul 30, 2008 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m making reference to the incident where Lannan broke Utley’s hand last year. Switch to decaf dude.

by taco pal on Jul 30, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Seeing the Phils score 10 or 12 runs on him probably will ease my hate. Especially if Chase takes him deep twice and lines another one off his thigh.

by dajafi on Jul 30, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Where have you gone, Tad Iguchi, a city turned its lonely eyes to you ….

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry if that was a bad reference. FYI – July 30th last year: Phillies traded for Kyle Lohse while Victorino and Bourn were both injured in a win over the Cubs. Iguchi hit his first homer for the Phillies, Brett Myers got his 7th save, and the Phillies cut the Mets lead to 3 games.

by phillyinportland on Jul 30, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

nice

I knew that two years ago today was the much-lamented Abreu trade. And I remember that Cubs game well—that stinkin’ bullpen mound in foul territory. But not the Gooch dinger, or even the result of the game.
